How often does your Pana L-mount cam freeze on you?

Where you'd have to take the battery out to restart it?

What would you consider normal, acceptable or unacceptable?

I have an S5 and can compare it with the G9, and G85. The G9 almost never froze, g85 did on occasion. I think the S5 is freezing at least on the level of the g85, if not more. I only used it for a few hours indoors vlogging and it froze twice already which makes it feel like it's a GoPro. Maybe I can reformat or replace the SD cards but just want to get a feel for it too.

Solution
I understand it needs to finish writing. S5 is nice because it has red lights to let you know that it's still writing. It doesn't take more than a split second or so for video. I don't think there's a huge buffer since it was 1080p footage on v30 cards. I'll try to run it harder and maybe try to replicate it in the coming days to see if that just wasn't just a one time thing.
Another thing that I recommended after many discussion s on the S1H Pro group on Facebook, is using the SD-Card formatter from the SD-Card association. the issue is the internal formatter in the camera does a quick format, where this formatter does a deep format. This may help improve your issues you may have.

I ran into this when I had a Lexar 256...
S1r- one freeze in 2 years, while shooting in 1080/60 video. EF lens on MC-21 adapter. Dropped the battery, normal function resumed, lost that clip.

I do not experience any freezes when the camera is standalone but it becomes completely unresponsive with some UI elements frozen , yet image showing correctly on screen, when I connect it via USB with the Ziyun Weebill S stabilizer gimbal and I perform some rolls! Looks like a bug in the camera's firmware.

Update (17/12/2021):

More recently, I experienced the camera freezing on its own. In all cases, it happened when I took a series of pictures in quick succession and I quickly switched to playback mode.

My initial reaction to this was to wait 1-2 minutes and then remove the battery to reboot the camera. However, in one occasion I decided to leave it alone for much longer and, after 4-5 minutes the camera became responsive again.

I read that some users suggested the SD Card is potentially the cause of this problem and I agree that this is very possible. This can happen if the SD card temporarily hangs/freezes and the camera's firmware does not handle the situation gracefully.

Never.

I regularly have problems with Nikon - which seem to be related to lens communication. Removing and replacing the lens usually fixes the problem.

I own both an S1r, as well as an S1h, and neither has ever frozen or required a battery removal.

Never happened with my S5. However, my S1 freeze sometimes, I think it is because of the CFexpress card.

S5 never frozen. Used almost every weekend for over a year. I would agree that a bad memory card can cause slow performance or crashes. I use Sandisk or prograde v60 uhs-ii cards. I had a sandisk card start dying after years of use which luckily only manifested as the card sometimes not being detected.

Never had freezing issues with G9, G100 or S5, also I had G85 previously do not recall the issue you experienced. I have always used Sandisk high end SD cards

I was doing a shoot today and it happened to me 3 times. I think the problem was with one of my SC cards (Sony TOUGH SDXCII, 64gb, 300 mb/s). Thankfully I had 2 cards in the camera. The other one seemed to work without a problem. I formatted the card in camera. I saw a response here that suggested formatting the card with a formatting software. I am going to try that. Hopefully it works because these SD card are not cheap.

I’ve never used a sony card, but if you check amazon user reviews, at 3 stars or lower sony sits at around 7% while while sandisk sits around 3%. doesn’t seem much but its across thousands of reviews. complaints include amazon selling tough cards from defective recalled batches, cards not fitting correctly, and cards causing cameras to black screen or corrupt files.

after many years of buying SD cards and USB memory, Sandisk has seemed to me to be most reliable. most recently I’ve used prograde UHS-ii cards. I was sufficiently confident in prograde reliability that I purchased the prograde UHS-ii/CF-A card reader and its been flawless.

free tip for anyone reading this: I had previously tried the sandisk UHS-ii reader (USB type A version) and the slot wasn’t even machined to the correct size to fit SD cards. uncharacteristically of Sandisk that reader scores a whopping 30% 3 stars or less with amazon customers. So while I highly favour sandisk sd cards, I cant give the same feedback for their card readers.

I had the G9 a year, no freezes.

I've had the S5 approx 8 months, no freezes.

My GH3 froze two or three times in about 1.5 years, all instances being in direct sunlight on a hot day, shooting video. It has shot video for six hours continuously using the mains adapter and not given up, although both times it was in a dark concert hall.

My GH4 froze twice in about five years, again in direct sunlight on a hot day and shooting video for a while. My G9, however, has frozen three or more times in about a year, and not even in the sun or hot weather. It seems to do it when shooting video for protracted periods of time, but it's not predictable. In all instances, popping the battery and reseating it after 30 seconds makes the camera right again.

I've had my S5 for almost six months, and it hasn't frozen once, touch wood. I haven't really put it through its paces in hot weather and direct sun, but it has shot under similar conditions and timeframes as the G9, and it has held strong.

Speaking of which, I only use Sandisk Extreme or Extreme Pro SDXC cards. Never had any issues with data loss or skipped frames, touch wood.

Speaking of which (see what I did there?), what the heck is the difference between the gold colored Extreme and the Black extreme pro cards anyway? Is it just another 30MBs read speed?

Apart from speed difference, I have no idea. I used the black Extreme Pro cards for a few years until I started buying the gold Extreme cards, and found negligible difference in writing speeds or reliability across the GH3, GH4, G9 and S5. The gold Extremes are up to 150 MB/s now, compared with 90 MB/s some years ago. I shoot in 4k 50p 10bit 422 150mbps and have no issues with the gold Extremes. Maybe there might be a difference in write speed for continuous raw shooting.

Thank you!

I use the Gold extreme cards in both my s1 and s5 and they seem to work fine at 60fps, too. I am shooting at 60p which is supposed to be 200Mbps, and don't seem to have any problems yet.

Hi, I have had new lumix S5 for under a week and it has frozen on me 4 times. This happened while shooting stills and once in playback mode. 2 times it required switching off and on again, and twice I had to remove the battery and reinsert it to restart. Not sure if it’s a problem with the latest firmware upgrade. As it is still under warranty, I am thinking of returning it.

What lens were you using when it froze up?

Were you using a Panasonic battery or a third party battery?

What SD card were you using? (And is it in good condition?)
