Just wondering if there's a way to have AF in Focus Mag. enabled, but still have a half-press of the shutter exit magnification in MF. I understand that half-pressing the shutter doesn't exit when magnification is used in AF, but it would be nice if the camera would detect that AF in Focus Mag. can't be used in MF and act as if it's disabled there.

Is this something where a custom mode or shoot set for MF might give me what I want without having to change multiple settings?

I don't think there is a setting for what you want. I have C1 set to magnify and just got used to pressing C1 again. The camera changed my settings/habits... :-)

I wonder if using the "auto magnifiy" mode with AF in Focus Mag turned off would do what you want? Or perhaps DMF mode with auto magnify?

You'd get the (usually annoying) auto-magnify when you turn the focus ring and a half press of the shutter reverts to normal view. Wouldn't work with mechanical MF lenses though, only fly-by-wire EF compatible types.

Just thinkin' out loud...

No. My point is that if AF in Focus Mag is off, then a half-press does exit magnification. I want it to do that when I'm in MF, regardless of whether AF in Focus Mag is enabled or not.

I have AF in Focus Mag and MF Assist On. If I switch an AF lens to use MF, then I get Auto Magnify when I turn the focus ring. If I half press the shutter button, magnification stops.

I could try with a purely manual lens, if that is what you are asking.

I am using both purely manual lenses, and native AF lenses in MF mode. Magnification is started with C1. I do see that focus ring initiated magnification exits on a half-press. This seems a bit like a bug.

I remember that with the Samyang 135/2. With electronic fully manual lenses like the Loxias, it works as expected. I must try the TSE-II on a Metabones and see what happens. It certainly goes into Magnify when you touch the focus ring (in Advanced Mode).

Yes. That's still not the issue. The issue is for magnification initiated with the Focus Magnifier menu item / custom button. As is required with fully manual (no electronic contacts) lenses.... or also for A mount lenses.

I agree it’s a bug and annoying at that. Eventually I remember to press the custom button again.

Actually, it only affects native-like lenses... so not that bad an issue for me. AF in Focus Mag. is actually not supported with the LA-EA5, but, unlike on the A7R2, I can zoom in while remaining in AF mode with an A mount lens. With the A7R2 I had to first switch to MF before I could zoom. That change is maybe not so helpful, though, because A mount lenses (mostly) require switching to MF mode before they can be manually focused... and switching to MF while magnified kicks you out of magnification.

No A mount lenses here. I have EF 24mm TSE II and bought the Samyang 135/2 in EF mount, so it could be shared with MFT bodies. Also have an EF 300/4 that is pretty much useless on FE bodies, maybe something to do with sensor stack. Works OK on MFT bodies.

How did you get the focus mag to work in the first place? I have set my C2 button in stills as the focus magnifier. When I press the button it does nothing in AF-S, AF-C and even in MF.

I want to ''zoom in'' on the point where the camera says it's in focus. When I'm in MF it zooms when I turn the focus ring, but not with the C2 button. How do I disconnect the magnifier from the lens to add it to the custom button? It can be selected but does nothing.

I have Magnify set on C1. It works in SAF and MF, but not CAF. I also get auto Magnify in MF when using the focus ring.

That's very strange. It does nothing at all? Normally it should bring up a focus box, which you can position, and the second press will zoom in to the first level of magnification.

If AF in Focus Mag. is off, this only works in MF, and gives an error in AF. What camera are you using. And what exact function did you assign to C2? It should be: Focus Magnifier.

Decoupling zoom from the focus ring is done by setting MF Assist off (tab 1, page 14, on the A7R4a).
