leaving for a trip tomorrow. Still unsure about which kit to take.
  • a6000 + sigma 30f1.4 and sigma 18-50f2.8
  • A7riii + either a couple of primes or 24-105f4 with a prime
the first kit is so much lighter and smaller...

just touring around with family. nothing serious photography-wise.

last time I took just A7riii and Batis 25mm. it's fine, but would be nice to have a couple of different focal length to play with.

Suggestions?

Take the lighter kit. Your aim isn’t photographic excellence - it’s keeping the family happy with opportunistic photography worked in.

Even with excellence as a goal: your main lens is a full stop faster making up some of the ff advantage. 28mm field of view vs 24mm wide isn’t often an issue that’s insurmountable. 24mp is plenty for most needs.

I am presuming you are familiar enough with both to make quick decisions and not lag behind due to complexity of the gear.

Take a 28-60 instead of the 24-105? Perfect for touring/nothing serious. Add a prime or two to cover low light or wider views.

I haven't used the a6000 for years. But this is just a family trip, so I think it should be fine. Thanks!

The A7Riii body is much nicer, but the kit is sure much heavier.

I saw a cool video where the person pitted a7rii in super35 mode against a6000 with same lens, a7rii won by a long shot with exception to overall resolution but that was really nit picking since the a7rii still resolved exceptionally well. Just a thought to think outside the box.

I also have the A6000 and A7RIII. I would go with A6000 kit as light and small with built-in flash if needed. IQ not as good as A7RIII but so what. It's good enough in most cases. If you had a subject in mind and where going to make a nice print the A7RIII would be the way to go. But for just family memories the A6000 works well.

I guess for me it would depend on where you were going.

If it's just a family trip to a not particularly photogenic destination - so snapshots and some lovely shots of your family - you could leave it at the A6300 and 18-50 and be done. If it's somewhere photogenic, where you are also hoping to catch some real stunners, I would probably go with the A7R3, 24-105 and maybe a single prime. But thats really your call. If it were me I would go with the A7R3, 24-105 a prime and the A6300 as a backup (put the 24-105 on it and you have a tele), but I am very photo-focused.

Just responding to your options and question you ask

ask and ye shall get opinions ….

I have both APS C and FF but I am no fan of the a6000, i really can't stand its ergonomics, so I would vote for the 7R III + just any thing, LOL. I would even mount that Sigma 18-50 on it and just shoot in crop mode and still not going to take the a6000 with me if I can only have one camera, i picked up that a6000 with 7000 actuation from my friend for $350 USD few months ago but only use it for time lapse only, I actually just got the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 since I have zero APS-C lens, I almost want to say that lens is too good for the a6000, LOL.

I won't take the Batis 25, in fact I won't take any Batis, I sold my entire Batis and went with Loxia and Voigtlander for landscape and travel. it works great for both for family trip or serious photo trip. but if AF is a requirement, I would take a prime like a 35GM or something I personally like prime better than slow zoom, so 24-105 is definitely not going to be in my bag when I travel, call me crazy, I would even just take the A7R III with the Sigma 18-50 if I have to have a zoom instead of taking that 24-105, but that's all personal preference.

Perhaps everyone has different standard on what is light and heavy , big and small, I consider the A7-series really small for any kind of travel.

I stopped taking my A73 on personal trips. As stated by someone earlier, the point of the trip is not trying to capture breathtaking images to sell, it is to enjoy the trip and family. I take my A6400 w/18-135 and enjoy the size weight. The A73 got more and more on my nerves as my trip went on because of the size and weight.

My vote would be 6000 and 18-50. I wouldn't even take the 30mm, you have that covered with the 18-50.

If "touring" means a car trip, I would take both cameras, smallish lens for the A6000 for discretion, and A7+24-105 for wider opportunies!

If it means lots of walking, bag carrying... then you should probably take the A6000: lens depends on if outdoors (tele) or city/indoors (wide).

Have a nice trip :)

It's pretty amazing to hear a camera small like A7 III can be that big of a hassle.

I was just looking at some travel photos from a few years ago shot with the a6000 and a couple of great lenses. My last trip I took my A7r3 with a 24-105 and what a difference. I also too the 20mm 1.8 and found I rarely used it. The quality of the images were substantially better and the weight issue was not all that bad. One lens pretty m inch covered all my needs.
