Might I ask how can I switch off the internal mic of Panasonic cameras?

Couldn't find any info on the operating manuals. I have specific interest on G85 and GX85.

So far my only solution is to mount an external mic to G85 (GX85 can't) having its power switching off. What a stupid way! :-(

Thank you in advance for your help.

Maybe you can use a spare mini jack plug instead? From what I can google, there is no way to turn audio recording off in Lumix cameras. You can probably set the recording level to 0 though.

I use right angle 1/8in jacks adapters when I record with external mics (GH5, GH5S and G9). When not using an external mic (and not wanting any audio recorded, I leave the adapter in with nothing else connected. Tricking the camera into thinking an external mic is connected is the only way to turn off the internal mic as far as I know.

Thank you for responses from Danielvr and say_doyster.

Strange enough Panny does not put in an option to switch off the internal mic... 😒😤😡.

I think I have to keep on put in something dummy to the mic port to trick G85 (no way to trick GX85) or just erase audio on post production.

Thank you again.

Genuine question:

Why do you want to turn off the internal mic? What benefit do you get?

I guess in most such cases, the internal audio track is simply not wanted. So, you might as well not create it (and save some disk space and potential confusion).

But if you're using an external recorder and external microphones, the sound (and/or noise) from the hdmi stream may get mixed-in with the external mics. So, that's a scenario where you do not want any audio signal to originate from the camera.

Because I do not do interview style of video. In fact the unwanted sounds from operation, e.g. zoom action, doing exposure compensation etc would be recorded by the camera if I do not mount an external microphone.

In fact majority of my video would be merged with other photos to become a slideshow style of video. I would add background music.

To have a silence footage OOC might save a lot of post processing work.

If you are sound editing it is trivially easy to kill the camera mic track. If you are feeding an external mic into the camera anyway that would usually kill the built in mic. If you are recording with a separate sound recorder as well then the camera mic track can give you confidence in your post sync.

I shot and edited video professionally for 15 years and never worried about the camera mic track. Used or killed it as suited the case.

I know it is not hard to do it and indeed I am doing it. Just wish to know any way to switch the internal mic off to save my work.

Thank you for your info.
