Your motorsport shots 5

Cylinders the size of eggcups! 1.5 litre 16 cylinder. This is a new car built by the guys who restore BRM to the original drawings. They own the rights to the cars I believe.

That blue Escort is a cool piece of kit.

We don't see them here in America. I wish we did. I saw one at a car show, a V6 race car in years, and years. Very cool car.

Some wonderful images here, but I wonder if anybody shoots something more than super cars, long lens head ons or pans of road racing? Do any of you photograph oval racing, drag racing, off road competition, hot rods, muscle cars etc? And Im not speaking of snapshots of parking lot car shows.

Good questions!

For me, my images are influenced by my preferences, as well as the fact that, at many venues, typical "spectator" locations would make good photos difficult even with the longest of my lenses.

Where I live, there are no large high-speed ovals, so no opportunity for this type of photo. While there are a few small dirt-track ovals, they typically run at night, and one pretty much needs to sit in the top rows of the bleachers to be able to shoot above the fence that surrounds the track. Night + long distance + dusty/dirty environment = unappealing to me - and yes, I've tried it.

I live in Northwest Washington state, and the closest dragstrip to me is actually across the border in British Columbia, Canada. Once Canada eases back their COVID-related border-crossing restrictions a bit more, I may give that venue a try.

Many of the road-racing images posted here, and I do include my own in this, are taken from locations at the tracks that are only open to people with Media/Press credentials, and are shooting closer to the track than is allowed for general spectators. But, unlike most of the images - at least in this specific thread - I also include kart racing in my motorsports photography. I enjoy it at least as much as automobile road racing. If you search this forum, you should be able to find some of my kart images; there are also some in my Gallery here on DP Review, as well as my online gallery at

Your closest oval track to the south is probably the one in Monroe. Pacific Raceways has a kart track you probably know, and motocross which is fun to photograph. Pacific has track riding days for motorcycles. I want to shoot some of the latter three in 2022.

I'm looking forward to the 40-150 f/4 PRO OM announced since a look through the photos I took this year show none of the shots I took at Pacific need anything faster than f/4. On the occasional photo I take longer that, most of them will work with a TC or the 300 f/4. I might be able to leave the 20-150 f/2.8 at home or in the car. I expect the 40-150 f/4 to be a lot lighter.

See you there!

You are welcome to post any shots you wish of motorsport in its many forms. many of us are keen on different aspects of motorsport so we show photo's of what we follow. There have been shots of motocross, karting, rallying, hill climbs, circuit racing, drifting, drag racing, rallycross amongst the many different forms. We have around 700 different posts many with multiple photo's, over the 5 sets of posts, a bit of everything. But please add to it what you like, it's about the cars and bikes.

Here's something different - Jetboats. One of the most spectacular motorsports around. I've posted photos of these over the last couple of years but no racing over the last two seasons, so no recent photos.

I'll have to check out the Monroe track. Something else that would be interesting if they allow photo access is the DirtFish rally-driving school in the Snoqualmie area.

Mission Raceway in BC also has a motocross track, and does track days for cars and motorcycles, so it looks like there's a choice of venues for those subject to border restrictions. This winter's weather may also affect matters next year: most recent status of the Sumas kart track is that they're without power due to being under water...

Does the Pacific kart track actually hold races? Haven't found a schedule for such yet. There's also the Puget Sound Go Kart Association, which has a track in Spanaway. It's one of the tracks on the NWKA ICP Cup circuit, and I've heard it's a very challenging track to drive.

These are fun. Don't have this kind of racing where I live. What does the passenger do?

Great photos prove you don't need a state of the art 45-60MP body, even a 16MP body or a FF sensor to make a good photo

passenger (navigator) provides the ballast to even up weight distribution but primary function in the early runs is to reinforce to the driver the direction of the track. One arm is usually outstretched to show the driver straight ahead, left or right. It gets very animated at times. The teams are given one of these on race day or the night before to show them track direction. Then the fun starts.

E5 was a great body to use over the years. It produced many large framed prints up to about 30 inches for teams. Also one 5m long wall mural for one driver’s garage.

Ian,

Is there any jet boat racing close to us in Brissy?

Ian,

Is there any jet boat racing close to us in Brissy?
Tweed Valley Jetsprint Club is the closest club and the track is at Cabarita, just south of the border. I think a new race calendar has been proposed for 2022. They have a website and FB page.

Thanks Ian. Looks like a good sport to shoot, I'll look in to it.

Fascinating. How do you get from #4 to #5 without passing #6 and making a U-turn?

Ballast and navigator. On offshore race boats, you have a throttle man, a navigator, and a helmsman.

Your comment about the E-5 amuses me. I know someone who traded his Nikon DSLR for a 61MP SONY because he was impressed by a 5-foot wide image printed on vinyl made with a Canon R5. He bought the SONY to take to a car show.

the way to 5 from 4 is as you said passed 6 not through it. So 6 is not needed in that instruction. It is difficult and a big part of the skill to learn track direction quickly and the reason for so many out of water occurrences. The track is very narrow and the boats are extremely quick. The Superboats (no engine restrictions) produce between 900 - 1500 hp.
