I have an old XQD card reader (sony)... Just bought a CF-Express card... will the old reader work with the CF-Express Type B card? I suspect I may need to buy a new card reader for the CF-Express card...

Cheers

You need a new one, ideally one that reads both cards. This one does, is inexpensive, fast, and works well for me.

Thanks for the info on the non-compatibility. I figured that would probably be the case.

The card reader you link to below, it reads both QXD and CF Express Type B. I don't see it being mentioned about the CF Express. It does say it reads SD Cards.

Cheers

Sorry!! Sent you the wrong link. Here you go—this one does all three cards and is the one I have. You can also get it with a USB-A plug instead of USB-C.

There are several card readers that can handle both XQD and CF express cards, but generally these readers are more than the cost of buying two separate readers. I would recommend getting a CFExpress specific reader.

In my case I have two CFExpress readers - one from Delkin and one from ProGrade Digital. Both handle CFExpress cards but not XQD.

I've sold my Lexar XQD reader and cards. Its the only time I've ever sold older cards and they still had good value. My reason was to consolidate to CFExpress cards and readers only.

As people have noted, you do need a new reader.

Depending on how old your XQD cards are, you still may need to retain your older reader though. The new sony reader only reads the newer (XQD 2.0 cards), the ones with the USB in their label. If you have an ancient (S/N/H series card) then only the older XQD only readers might be able to get information off of it.

The VeloGK reader is $51, less than any of the CF express only card readers from either Delkin or Prograde that I see on Amazon. And it actually works on CF express cards as well as the 3 different types of XQD cards I have, not to mention SD cards. That’s more than I can say for the $98 Sony or the $150 Blackjet, both of which are supposed to read XQD cards but don’t because the drivers haven’t been updated. If you really just want to read CF express cards only, the Unitech reader for $40 also works well too.

I plan to keep using my XQD cards as backup, whether or not I keep my D500 and D850. But for $51 and the speed it reads and writes I don’t see how one can do much better than the VeloGK.

Yup. Thanks. I found the USB type and got it.

Great! I’ve been really happy with it. Don’t know how it will hold up over time but we’ll see. Like I said before I really like the small form factor for travel.

Finally got it out of the packaging... Tried it out. Seems to read the files fast. I like the casing / feel of the unit. Nice and small. Love that it can read both types of cards.

Glad you like it—I think it is a great deal. Let’s just hope it holds up!
