My son just upgraded to that combo to have more correction latitude and smoother gradation, but bad surprise. Any thought – alternatives – hope for coming support of the 10 Bit 4:2:2 file format?

Do you have the Studio or the Free version?

The files 10 bit 4:2:2 from my A1 go well with the Davinci Resolve 17 Studio.

The files 10 bithanks, good to know that older camera models are supported. It's the paid version actually, on PC. The files (mp4) can be played, but they are not accepted in the time line. I am completely new at this software, and my son who is better showed me the problem. Since I pushed him into those purchases, I feel awkward until a fix is found without resorting to compressing the files to 8 bit. Maybe he should use another file format, or perhaps DaVinci will include a (profile) for that camera in a next update? from my A1 go well with the Davinci Resolve 17 Studio.

I see no reason for the A7IV files to be different than the A1 or A7sIII files?. Video files are usually much less dependent upon exif for support. Just a guess that it will be updated.

He's using the free version, no 10-bit with the free version. He needs to upgrade to the paid Studio version to work with 10-bit files.

Shame on me you were right! I was sure he had purchased it because we spoke about it, but I just checked with him and he is still on the free version. So this explains that. At least we know how to get it to work :-)

Sorry for the disturbance!

I have been testing different picture profiles and codecs of my new A7IV with Davinci Resolve Studio (windows 11). Resolve works, and Slog3 looks good with the Sony's free cinema LUT.

For what I have seen so far from my son's takings, the colours are gorgeous. The LCD screen rendition is also so much better than on the III. And with the 200-600, the AF performance on small birds, even in intricate branches, is nothing short from breathtaking. Of course sometimes when a second bird jumps in the frame, there is some hesitation…

Agree, colours are really great. I have been using Sony A7III, BMPCC 6K Pro, and Panasonic GH5 - I may be able to go E-mount only system.

Looking into purchasing Davinci Resolve 17 with Speed Editor, to be used on PC, we don't know which version comes in more handy, weather with physical dongle or with registration card. If someone could suggest the best way (I would personally go for the dongle) it would be appreciated!

Thanks

OK. After enquiry, we took the dongle version for the possibility to swap computers.

We might need some additional help please:

Installing DaVinci 17 has succeeded after uninstalling a previous free version. But how to enable the advanced codecs recognition? There is actually no difference in interface or file handling with the previous free version. The USB dongle doesn't seem to be recognized, at least there is no mention of it in the menus, and the “about” start window does not mention that the version is active or not. We changed the work flow to Sony. OS is Windows 10.

Does that seem normal or perhaps not?

Did you install Studio version? When you launch the program, does it show "Studio" logo?

You may get more/better advice from "Digital Video Talk" forum.

Do you mean that it is not enough to install the free version and to launch it with the dongle plugged in?

The package is labelled Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 17 Studio (Dongle) + Speed Editor. No software included, it has to be downloaded and the sole available on Blackmagicdesign website is the free version…

The launch screen only shows Resolve 17.4.2

As a warning: On some hardware platforms, 4:2:2 hardware acceleration is lacking

I just tested a 24P 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 S Log 3 file on the latest version of Davinci Resolve from my A7IV and no problem adding to timeline, color correcting and exporting in UHD.

Con someone else confirm it works on their free version?

Thanks!

I have the paid version Studio 17.4 and still my 10 bit 422 file only gives me audio no video preview on the timeline to work with. It's why I upgraded in the 1st place. what do I do?

not enough info, need to know if you are on a pc or a mac, what cpu and what video card.

for example, neither nvidia nor amd support 10-bit 4:2:2 decoding, but some intel cpu chips now do, and so do some mac computers.

I had the same issue on the H.264 422 10-bit A7S3 files. Davinci just would not read the files. So now I shoot 420 10-bit. Haven't tried if the issue is still there with 18, but probably.

Video GPU acceleration does not work with 10 bit 422 so it will run like trash. Not DR problem, Intel, nvidia, and AMD problem. Run it in a max and it works fine. Best to use 10 but 4:2:0
