I’m getting some sort of unusual band when using high speed sync on my Sony a7iii. It seems to be happening with different lenses. And it happens in the same spot on the frame even when I move around my flash. If I orient the camera the opposite way vertically the line just appears on the bottom instead of the top. I have the e-Front curtain shutter disabled. Anyone have any ideas? I hope my shutter or sensor isn’t shot.

It is unfortunatelly failing shutter.

If there was something wrong with the shutter or sensor, it should be evident in non-flash photos. Perhaps the problem is in the flash unit. In HSS it is supposed to produce many rapid pulses of light to simulate a continuous flash of longer duration. Perhaps the flash is not doing so with uniformly intensity. Have you tried using another flash?

Another idea is to clean the contacts on the hotshoe for both camera and flash unit, in case there is a communication failure between camera and flash.

What flash unit? How is the result with EFSC activated?

The flash part might just be coincidence as any high shutter speed would show the pattern. Maybe ambient shots are taken at lower shutter speeds.

I agree. If it's a shutter problem it should show in a photo without flash at the same shutter speed. If it doesn't the OP should try another flash (or try the flash on another body) to see if the problem is a misfiring flash. A little experimentation will show whether the problem is in the body or flash.

This was my fear as well. I don’t think it’s the flash, I don’t have another flash to test it with but I can try and find one at a local camera store.

Yeah I’m not really doing a lot of high shutter speed stuff without the flash so it’s hard to tell.

I was able to recreate the problem without the flash. It’s the body. Anyone have any recommendations on repair places? 🥲
