Any travel/landscape photographers who upgraded from XT2 to XT3?

I don't shoot sports, BIF's or other fast moving objects so the autofocus system of the XT2 never was an issue for me. If it wasn't for you too, why did you upgraded to the XT3 and was it worth the additional money when you look back?

It was for me, but I'll tell you my thoughts anyway ;-) I upgraded mainly because I'd spent a lot on the XF 100-400mm and 80mm macro, had been shooting BIF and other wildlife and wanted to pair those lenses with the best autofocus system Fuji currently offers.

I was also attracted by the higher resolution EVF, the claim of better low light focussing (particularly for indoor events) and improved performance with the older primes among other relatively minor improvements.

However, if I had been mainly doing landscapes and classic travel shots, then I think it would have been much harder to justify upgrading. If you are a heavy user of the older (1.2/1.4) primes, then you'll see immediate benefits, and of course it's always nice to have an even better EVF (although IMO the X-T2's is very good as it is). Many have pointed out that the X-T3's noise performance at higher ISOs is marginally worse than the X-T2's (at least it was with the earlier firmware). This might also be a consideration for you, although I can't say I've noticed the difference.

tl;dr: If you're shooting with the older primes and your travel shots include many low light locations, you'll see some noticeable benefits, but for general travel and landscapes, I'd suggest that the camera you have is fine.

Really only 2 reasons to upgrade from X-T2 to X-T3:

1) Video

2) Continuous AF performance and AF coverage in AF-C mode

Unless you are a serious sports or video shooter, there is very little reason to “upgrade”. The X-T3 offers no image quality improvement over the X-T2, it’s even a little noisier at high ISOs.

Side question. Does the xt30 have same video performance of the xt3?

I was thinking of getting x e3 but maybe the xt30 or xt2/xt3 is more useful. I’m starting to get more into video and the flip screen would help.

I upgraded and used x-t3 for 3 months, after which I sold it. Here are my reasons for that.

I value raw sensor performance and long exposure SNR, where t3 has little to offer over t2.

Ergonomically it is the same camera, touch screen functionality and bluetooth were not exactly what I hoped for.

As for faster CPU, I never felt the need for that on t2, something I wish I could say for my x-t100 as well.

Both are great cameras, but I wouldn't pay more than +$200 for t3. I'd rather have ibis, than all the improvements t3 offers over t2.

I have a 35 1.4 too. Why would it benefit from the st3?

but I guess with all comments, I should keep my xt2 and should not upgrade yet

My main hobby is hiking and landscape photography and I'm going through the same decision right now, debating which X-T I want to buy if I dump FF. I believe their are other ancillary "refinements" that cloud the decision a bit (at least for me). Some of the one's I've pointed out for my own comparisons are:
  • Relocated cable release plug (doesn't interfere with L-brackets)
  • Ambient lighting mode (red-only screen for nighttime shots)
  • ISO 160 (base)
  • Touchscreen
  • Bluetooth
  • Diopter lock
  • USB-C port vs USB 3.0
  • Quad core processor for faster operation
None of these on their own are worth the upgrade. But all together, along with the better EVF and faster/better AF coverage mentioned already, can be a tipping point. I'm still undecided but to me it's not as simple as "If you need video or better AF only".

"On the video front, the X-T30 offers a surprisingly robust feature set including 4K/30p and 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI and 8-bit 4:2:0 internal recording. That's one of a few key differences between the X-T30 and X-T3 – upgrading to the X-T3 gets you 10-bit 4:2:0 internal and 4K/60p."

Exactly. The X-T2 will work just fine for stills. Maybe better. I have the X-H1 because of the IBIS only and my 90mm lens (and others).

Nice, thanks. I think the 4k is a must quality wise, my x e2 looks worse than my iphone and can't track worth a crap, but 30p is prob good enough for me considering that's what my drone does also and this is just a hobby at this point. I appreciate the smaller size of xt30 also.

I shoot landscape and upgraded from the X-T2 to the X-T3 and for me it was worth it. The X-T3 has a bit more dynamic range(less noise in shadows) and doesn't suffer from any red/purple grid flare. Those were however not the only reasons I upgraded, but the ones directly related to landscape.

I had a XT2 and upgraded to XT3 because I shoot a lot of BIF, horse jumping and aerial phography. For landcsape I would not upgrade since the main improvement is related to video and AF. If you are not a video guy, I would just keep the T2 and save money for new or better glass

Fight agin your GAS syndrome :-)

I thought the X-T2 was better in shadow noise than the T3. Also, do you have an example where the red/purple grid flare was evident? I am just curious as o haven’t had that problem at all.

Simply because the older, slower focussing lenses perform better on the X-T3. I don't know if it's solely down to the faster processor or if it's that plus other software tweaks, but whatever Fuji's engineers did, it's immediately noticeable.

While the performance improvements are there, I wouldn't recommend upgrading simply to improve the speed and accuracy of the 35mm 1.4's focussing, unless that's really important to you. The 35 1.4 wasn't exactly slow on the X-T2 :-)

Does that advice hold if new versions of each camera are the same price? I've smashed my xt20 and am currently on a driving tour in Thailand. The next city has both for virtually the same price. What would peoples advice be under these circumstances?

I did upgrade to get a better AF faster more precise and much more sensitive in low light plus face and eye detection that works quite well.

OTOH I do shoot BIF also

Depends. The X-T3 does have some nice refinements - video, AF-C etc., but typically has a crappy rear command dial and it can't quite match the X-T2 for high ISO performance. For the same price, the X-T3 probably make sense for you, I bought an X-T3, didn't find that it wasn't much of an upgrade for me at all, and sent it back. No regrets, bought some new glass instead, but your situation is different. Both are very nice cameras, whichever you choose.

Thanks, I'm not bothered about video performance. From everything I read the XT2 seems to come out on top with folks. Just wondered how much price influenced that. I probably won't decide until I walk into the shop.
