Auto mode sucks, right? (pic)

I just took my first real test shot with the 300D today in full auto mode.

I don't know about all the whiners and complainers here but it looks like a pretty damn good shot to me. Shot in full auto with the kit lens, flash fired, 1/60 shutter speed, f-stop 4.0, shot in .jpg and did no post processing, just cropped it slightly.

Thanks for brining some reality into the forum!

My daughter also has a gift for making auto mode produce great results. She just "points and shoots".

I really appreciate your post!

Rich

No, it doesn't. However, I am using the auto modes less these days. I like the center focus point selected in the P mode for a lot of shots. The one auto mode that I sometimes use is the Sports mode. It activates the continuous focus servo and allows up to 4 quick shots. I am often trying to capture birds in flight with the Sports mode.

In any case, this is easily the best camera that I have ever owned (out of a dozen or so). For a serious amatuer who needs an SLR, one cannot go wrong with the Digital Rebel.

I was not implying that the auto mode was going to work for everything, but there have been quite a few posts indicating that the camera is worthless for P&S, from what I can see here, that is not the case.

The detail is amazing;

Just wanted to add the I have not had my camera out of auto mode yet and I get what I think are great results. I'm completely new to the SLR world so I have a TON of learning to do. But, I now have my copy of Understanding Exposure so I'll hopefully venture into the "real" world soon!

Did you think auto mode would somehow would somehow blur the image?

Your pics are looking GREAT! You've obviously got a good eye and continue to demonstrate that the photographer is more important than the tools used.

Just out of curiosity. I don't think i've ever taken a shot in auto mode, but anyway, what is the ISO speed and i take it this is at the +1,+1,+1 settings of parameter 1?

I'm just curious bc i see some noise that i didn't expect to see.

Great shot, though,

I posted initially that this was 1/60th shutter, aperture 4, with the kit lens.

And yes, this is with parameter 1 on full auto. I have since "zeroed out" the camera and switched it to parameter 2 but haven't shot anything yet with those settings.

I think you're misinterpreting what people are saying. Of course you can get a good picture using auto mode. But in my experience, you will have more bad shots with auto mode on the DR than you will with a P&S digicam (my reference being a Canon Digital Elph and Sony F707). This is primarily because auto-exposure and auto-flash exposure is a bit too conservative, auto white balance works poorly with indoor lighting (see the review on this and other websites), and the 7 point focus sometimes picks strange things to focus on. Try taking some indoor pictures without flash and see if they all turn out as nicely as the one you just shot. All these issues can obviously be addressed in the creative modes or with some tweaking in photoshop.
But numerous folks have posted (without pictures) of horrible performance in full auto mode.
You seriously want people to actually post their BAD SHOTS?

I have read numerous posts that say "all auto mode pics are badly focused" or "the 300D always underexposes in full auto"

I am simply pointing out that you can get perfectly good shots in auto. As to more bad than good I don't use full auto very often so I can't comment on that.

That Yellow Tail Shiraz is pretty good for the price isn't it? :v) Don

thanks, i was just wondering where the noise/artifacts were coming from. The only reason i noticed is that I could actually see grain in the shadow/darker areas and i'm not used to seeing that with this camera...

I've been conditioned to look in shadows for noise by my previous camera and i was shocked to see even that little bit here..

Still, great pics :)

Yes it is!
