If you can't get good enough photos with the 18-55 - it may not be the lens' fault :P

There is wonderful photographic content on YouTube, and the creators deserve to get paid. Just my controversial opinion.
Agreed. 99% of the internet is funded by ads so, by that argument, any external links would be clickbait!

I don't get where you are coming from.

No clickbait and the guy makes stunning images.

You're off base here Truman. All I have said is based on true experience and meant as a pep talk to others in my shoes

Was recently ready to sell the 18-55 off and spend a whole ton of money and thought I'll just see if others out there feel the 18-55 is as good as I think it is (and others who have pm'd me) and then saw these videos and looked through my own photos with the lens and realised it was just a GAS attack and I need to go out and shoot more again and get creative again and now i'm hyped up and excited about the weekend (been recovering from surgery past 6 weeks and then another illness in spring and summer so not shot since January!) I'll be spending shooting with the X-T2 and just this lens.

Don't know why that would upsecat anyone.

I haven't and will never say if anyone doesn't like this lens or prefers the 16-55 F2.8 or primes etc (I LOVE PRIMES) they are bad or attack them out of any context whatsoever like you have done. In fact i hav recently asked and seriously mulled over the advice and feedback of many in this forum about my recent potential purchase of the 16-55 or various primes (thanks again all)

Hope this honest and sincere thread is not going to be derailed into one of those contentious threads.

I'll do this up front not by PM to show my sincerity. Jerry Astro could you weigh in here and make a judgement on whether Truman's post is fair play or not.? Because I see nothing in my OP or anywhere else in my posts in this thread that warrants those terms or aspersions. If so then please delete everything I wrote.
The only thing that surprises me is your reaction. If Mother Theresa herself was on social media these days somebody would find a way to criticise her work. Grow a thicker skin and sprinkle a few LOLs about, your post was fine and I enjoyed the content and the point you made. Look at the likes you got.

Yeah fair enough I'll try I'm better at it off line but online having a thick skin has always been hard for me.

Wow 18 likes Lol, I hadn't even looked at that!

Cheers and I will do my best!

Is what you're going to say - True. Helpful. Important (or Inspiring.) Necessary. Kind.

In general, I 100% agree. It's a lovely lens and a great kits lens! the only downside, for me, is the lack of weather seals, otherwise I'd still own it :-)

Not my video

The same can be said and seen on numerous Utube videos and reviews about the least costly Fuji XC 14-45 OIS kit lens. Check them out.

The lens used in unimportant in Fuji land. The user , and not his lens but his talent is what counts.

'It's what's in front and behind of the camera that matter' :D

That's putting it mildly! Amazing, if only someday I could do 1/4 as well... I like the 18-55mm, got it bundled with my X-E3. It's defective in the sense the front element isn't cemented in well(it moves when cleaning) but when I pop it back in correctly, my copy is sharp(I have a lens testing chart.).

But what these photographs prove, as Ansel Adams said, it's the twelve inches behind the camera that really matters. Thanks for posting, I'll remember this next time GAS strikes. Again, powerful images.

Merely contributing to this thread means you're adding content which Dpreview uses to attract readers so it can sell ads.
Damn. Time to put down the keyboard.

Couldn’t agree with you more Truman, and I fully support your view.

Hi Truman,

I don’t think YouTubers make a whole lot. If you search for average YouTube income, this answer seems to pop up multiple times:

“Most YouTubers earn around $18 for every 1,000 ad views. That works out to around $3 to $5 per 1,000 video views. Of course, this varies based on your channel, but that gives you a rough estimate of what it takes to earn a living on YouTube.”

I subscribe to several YouTube photographers and find their content really useful. Hope that provides some scale on the revenue.

It seems like there are so many things going on these days that are polarizing us every where we turn. Whether it's politics, health care, government, social issues or whatever. Why is everything suddenly making us feel like we have to take a stand on such miniscule things? Why must we let it happen? Yeah, I realize this is a forum based on technology, but it's also based on art, is it not?

I dunno, maybe I don't belong here and maybe I'm not wise enough to understand the discrepancy, but I don't see why sharing an artists video that depicts some really moving street and documentary work should be blasted because the guy makes a few bucks off his work. I'm pretty sure that any profession can be found to be flawed in some way but that's just the nature of humans looking out for what they think is right or wrong.

BTW, I'm not taking a side on this but I did enjoy the images in the video after I got past the depression of it. What was the story behind the feeling of those photos? Are we all heading into depression?

Yikes!

Thank you so much for this link!

a lot of damn good photography done by a very talented photography !!!

evidently he lets us have a look in the life of a very poor region in eastern Europe.

Images full of deep empathy, done by someone who knows how to make very impressing photographs….

As for the 18-55, I harvested a lot of shitstorm when I wrote some months ago in this forum that the 18-55 is much underrated… these photos make proof that I was not wrong - and that good and impressing photography depends to 99% exclusively on the „thing“ just behind the camera….

JUST search on youtube for „cheap camera contest“ - that is the best medicine against GAS

Cheers

I agree and your point is well made. Amid all the often repetitive gear discussions there should always be space to see and discuss (and marvel) at how it’s actually used, particularly if it also makes a useful point that challenges forum preconceptions. The irony in this case is that the images in the video actually make Truman’s point - it’s the vision and artistry that matters, less the actual lenses, which are often better than the more gear-obsessed folk give credit.

The work in the linked video is superb, way better than the average and I’m extremely glad to have seen it. Many thanks to the OP for posting. I didn’t see any adverts but if the Photog makes some money from them then frankly it’s well-deserved.

Clickbait? For that 8:29 minutes of pleasure in my life, Denis Buchel is well entitled to whatever pittance he derives from that clip - and then some.

Why shouldn't someone benefit from the work they produce? We all do...
I agree with you !

And for all those shouting „clickbait!!“ I want to say just this:

EVIDENTLY the photographer is living in a VERY POOR COUNTRY and I bet he has not much money as well. Perhaps it took a long time for him to accumulate just the money to be able to buy this little kit of one body and one single little zoom? Perhaps he could even just afford to buy it in used condition?

so - what about just calm down, be respectful and happy to live on the sunny side of life and sunny side of this earth instead of looking down on other photographers and shout this ridiculous „clickbait !“ instead of paying just respect to his very talented photographer?

THANK YOU .

cheers

just about the big role of TALENT to make good shots:

I enjoyed watching the video too. And I don't consider it a clickbait hype.

Here is a video on Youtube about Gutavos Minas' street photography. He uses X-T2 with 18-55mm and 27mm for his street work.

Thank you for the interesting and inspiring link to gustavos Minas !

Impressing, how fast he finds and shoots special Situations in the streets… this confirms what he said „on the walk“ through Hamburg: „You have to do every day streetphotography to become sufficiently experienced in street photography to get good pictures“

I found another Video about the photography of Denis Buchel:
