Collapsing black stripe on the top - any chance to fix it? :)

Is it just me who finds it very annoying? When you refresh/load the page, there's this space on the top, presumably for advertisement. I don't mind ads, but most of the time it's just blank space and it collapses in a while - sometimes very quick, sometimes in a second or two, and it's hugely annoying as it disrupts navigation through the menus and links on the top of the site.

Looks like you have some type of script/cookie and/or ad blocker software enabled or within your browser settings.

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)

I don't have any ad blockers; and I have the same issue on my phone with mobile version of the site. Sometimes (rarely) an ad is shown on the top in which case it doesn't collapse, but next time I refresh it or navigate to another sub-forum, it's blank again and collapses.

UPD: also just checked it on a different PC (also without any ad blockers), connected through a vpn tunnel from a different city - same issue. After my initial login, it showed some ads on the top a few times, then started showing blank stripes and snapping.

Looks like DPReview just doesn't have enough ads to show me :)

Never seen this on my many setups...but have seen it with script limiting settings and ad blockers,
UPD: also just checked it on a different PC (also without any ad blockers), connected through a vpn tunnel from a different city
May then be an issue with your IPS

Those are two different PCs and two different broadband providers; it's also the same on my phone on 4G network via a third mobile provider. Neither of them has any ad blockers installed. Is it maybe country-specific (Australia).

Still have never seen it and first time reported here that I know of. Have seen it with regards to the cases I noted earlier. Might just be an issue with the ad provider (code in the ad itself) . I don't think DPR can control that but can pass it on. Also look at the tips embie provided....Often the answer. Thanks very much for reporting. Admin will likely look into

Not there on my monitor...

When I re-open DPR (from my bookmarks tab) It's there (!)...for 1 sec.

Seems to me your page does become full loaded ?

What I would do :

- Run C Cleaner (including register tab)

- Remove all cookies in Google Chrome (if applied)

- Run the cleaner of my anti vitus (Bull guard here)

- Remove the DPR from bookmarks tab and re-load again

- Restart computer and check it out

- Read my PM ;-)

Success,

eMBie

Just for the heck of it, I fired up my VPN, used a server in Australia, loaded DPR in a freshly installed Chrome, and saw what I think to be what you described.

This is the page immediately after loading:

And this is about a second later:

There have been reports in the past about page jumping that may have been similar to what you see, like this one:

That's it - and I've been having it for about a year or so, just yesterday decided to complain... I can speculate there's an ad broker or something and it doesn't have enough ads for Australia :)

Now I'm also getting page jumping. What did you do to me :) That said, goes away when I use a faster ISP. Strange it just started. Get it at other sites as well. Updated Firefox just a few hours ago...that might be part of it

Did a little more research. There is an Amazon-adsystem.com script associated with that space. If your browser, or ad ware, or ISP blocks that script then you get the page jumping described. I think it's unlikely DPR can affect the issue. I simply went into my browser/script settings and allowed the script to run (was being blocked) and the issue was gone

I think it's the same symptom but different cause. I have this issue intermittently , in some cases it does show an ad after refresh (but most of the time it collapses).

None of my browsers block Javascript, Chrome doesn't block ads for this site. Also tried it in Firefox - same issue.

In Chrome debug, when the ad is shown, this element (<div class="centerAdContainer">)
starts as
<div id="ape_adSlot_center_placement" class="ad center text/x-dacx-safeframe"
And when it's collapsed, it starts with
<div id="ape_adSlot_center_placement" class="ad center text/x-dacx-safeframe collapsed"
Note the 'collapsed' attribute. I'm not 100% sure but it looks like it comes from the server this way. Unfortunately my web-fu doesn't go as far as investigating this issue further on my side.

The issue reproduces in different browsers and different platforms (PC, mobile), three different devices with three different ISPs.

That ad space isn't always taken up by a Amazon-adsystem.com ad

Many actually do. Firefox, for example, did an update a while back where some scripts are actively blocked and pretty tricky to unblock. And with every update...it seems to change. As I noted, my current version of Firefox was blocking the script. I also know that the page jumping issue has been specifically addressed with browser updates in the past. How fast is your connection? On slower connections Page Jumping is more common. Do you have an anti-virus program? Mine can affect web scripts as well

A while back there was a similar post (can't find it now) and the issue was related to web security certificates slow to update or... something like that...that affected the ad space. Maybe the staff can way in after checking. May take a while

When it shows an ad, it's always from Amazon, so maybe it's the opposite - an issue with non-Amazon ads.

I tried Firefox to no avail (it has Javascript enabled), but my main browsers are all Chrome, both PC and mobile, they have Javascript permitted in general and specifically for this site.

I don't have antiviruses at all (nor PC neither mobile) apart from the standard ones provided by Win10.

The internet connection is fast enough (100Mbps) and I tried it through different providers including mobile 4G.

Could be related to the time delay. As Patco noted above, the issue manifested after switching to Australian VPN.

I just now took another VPN trip to Oz, and continued to see the same page jumping due to (I believe) an ad not being found to occupy its allotted space, as I saw previously.
I added the extension "AdGuard AdBlocker", and the page jump issue was resolved.

Happens for me (Page jump) only with the Amazon Script

The Windows anti-Virus updates often...could be a player

Which is like having a slow connection ...even though your with a 100mps ISP. But I think the issue is how your setup is handling scripts
