What wireless flash trigger for GX9?

I have a GX9. I own several flashes, a Yongnuo YN560 and Nissin i40. To match the size of the small m4/3 body I bought the FlashQ trigger when it first came out, but I generally find them unreliable. One problem seems to be the battery contacts that need cleaning all the time. Pulling it out of the box after sitting for a while, you never know whether it would work. Thus I have stopped using it, and when I need flash for photography, I will use my Nikon D7100 with the Yongnuo YN622N mounted. The trouble is the size, one YN622N is about 1/3 of the size by volume of my GX9 ...

So what do you do to trigger a flash when using a GX9 or similar camera? Also worth noting is that I do manual flash only, not TTL. Hope this simplify things.

You could use the small Olympus FLM3 flash which can also trigger off camera flash?

If you want an on camera wireless trigger the good old poverty wizards aka Yongnuo have always worked for me. Think its the RF603 ii that you need, can't help with all the various flash guns I just got an Olympus 600RL which works fine.

One day when I had nothing better to do with my life, I was actually browsing through the GX9 user's guide and I'm pretty sure that I read that the little pop-up flash on the GX9 can be used as a flash trigger. Since I use a flash about once every 10 years, you would have to read the manual to see if and how it does that and what external flashes are compatible. Hope. this helps.

Afraid it doesn't, excerpt from the manual

When you use the flashes (DMW-FL200L, DMW-FL360L, DMW-FL580L: optional) with
the wireless flash recording function, you can separately control the firing of the flashes in
three groups and the flash attached to the hot shoe of the camera.
• The built-in flash does not support wireless flash control.

Oly flash doesn't have the same fittings as Pana. Doesn't work on GX9 (at least mine :))

Yes it does work as a trigger. I ahve the Oly FL-900R and set it to M. The on flashGX9 flash and Mechanical shutter works a treat. Only issue is you can't do much in the way of flash adjustment in camera and you can't rotate the on camera flash head to point at the off camera flash

So the correct answer to your question is :

Use the on camera flash as a remote trigger with an off camera flash in manual mode. You therefore adjust the power on the flash not in the camera. This works with the Oly FL900R, which is the only remote flash I have. It s on sale at the moment at OMDS Europe for 349 eur. Yes it's more than a Godox but is weatherproof, comes with a diffuser, a white flip up card and a foot. Most important you are guaranteed it is compatible with your oly camera
 
There is problem with the word “wireless” in this context. Oly and Pana use it to describe their optical communications, which work well with Oly and Pana flashes. But flash manufacturers may require radio signals to operate especially without line of sight communication. And these too are described as wireless. Be careful to get all the correct information.

One on the camera as trigger, another on the Nissin i40 as receiver. The YN560 has the receiver in-built.

That’s how I work with manual flash. Both the Nikon and Canon version work on the GX80 in my case.

The problem with this is that you need the external flash to be in line of sight which limits the flexibility of using external flash. Plus I already have two flashes and don’t want to buy yet another one.

I already have a pair of Yongnuo RF but am not happy with their size.

Yes, you are right. I did a little more research and realized that my YN622N does not directly fire the Yonguno YN560-III flash I have, but a RF603 does.

I also confirmed that my Nissin i40 is the "FT" version so it works whether in manual or TTL mode when mounted on the hot shoe. If the flash is in stand-by, turning the GX9 on also turns the flash on. Further, the i40 is rather small so it would be my choice for traveling. A recent trip to the Grand Canyon reminds me of the importance of fill in flash in severe back-lighting situations. I assume the built-in flash will fire in P-mode when back-lighting is detected, but it was hit-or-miss. I must admit though I have not used the GX9 long enough to know how to properly use its built-in "tiny" flash. May be more practice before my next adventure.

Instead of buying yet another trigger, I will keep my set up and continue to use the Nikon for more "serious" flash photography when the size of the gear is not an issue. The Yongnuo YN560-III is a cheap but powerful flash, great for photography needing bounce and diffuser at the same time.

However, it seems there is nothing.

Can you confirm that ?

On another forum someone told me it was possible to use the GX9's flash as a "light's master" to control a slave flash.

Sorry if I did some mistakes, as you guessed it, I am French.

as long as they are in line of sight, the in-built flash should be ok as a trigger. But it’s only optical control, not radio.

i’m afraid I don’t know. I use a radio trigger with my Godox flash. I always felt a wire was an unsophisticated solution!
