I purchased an EL-El15b battery a week ago and put it in my camera and it caused the viewfinder to go very dim and the whole viewfinder went red when I tried to push the shutter button and wouldn’t focus the image. When I put my original battery back in it did the same thing (it has never done that before). I blew air into the battery compartment and the battery contact points, and tried them both again and they worked fine. Note the the R- numbers on the back are different, one says R-41148121 and one says R-41019020. Also one says IS16046(part 2)/IEC52132-2 and one says IS16046/IEC62133…any ideas as to the genuine nature or not?

Just different market labels. It doesn't seem to be fake just dusty with a bit of grease or something on the contacts.

The electrical behavior - no idea. But the IEC number is simply the IEC Li-Ion battery design standard. The battery at the bottom of your picture is earlier (s/n 2020040....) than the battery at the top (s/n 202012...) and the top battery says it conforms to the revised IEC standard issued in 2017. The non-"-2" number was set in 2012.

Design standards are regularly incremented, though it can take a long time for the standards committee to agree on all the changes to be incorporated into an updated standard.

But all that said, it still doesn't answer whether it's a fake. Counterfeiters will make sure labeling looks right. About the only clue is where you purchased it, whether from Nikon, or an authorized Nikon dealer, or a trusted vendor like B&H... or a counterfeiter's dream like Amazon or eBay.

Where did you buy the battery from? Is that place an authorized reseller?

The rectangular labels in the right bottom corners with "Nikon" logo look different.

Look for a small letter stamped above the last electrical contact. All of the genuine Nikon batteries have this. If there is no letter, the battery is most likely counterfeit.
