I'm sure I can't be the only one who's excited about the announcement of this lens - if the performance is good enough (and there's no reason to doubt that it will be very good, given Tamron's recent offerings), then I can imagine this replacing my beloved Sony 18-135, which is something I never thought I'd say!

Have there been any reviews yet?

no reviews yet, but every Tamron superzoom has been better than the previous one so I am quite hopeful we will see something that is pretty good. there is a review of the old Tamron 16-300 here on dpreview and I am expecting the new one will beat the old one.

Over time I've shifted from a Nikon aps-c dslr kit to Sony mirror-less. I now have both the A6400 and A7Riv and a variety of aps-c and ff lenses. I've had a 70-300mm lens of some sort in slr/dslr flavors for a long time. That's the last dslr lens I don't have a convenient mirror-less counterpart for. This could compete for that spot in my "bag" against a 70-300 or 70-350, etc.

Yup no idea why they didn’t put this out back when they released the 18-200 years ago, instead of crowding into the 18-200 offerings at a time when E mount lenses were a lot more limited.

Exactly my thoughts. Will be a perfect complement to my 16-55.
I'm looking to do the same, Dirk.

For those who might have missed the other thread:

It could actually replace 2 popular sony lenses. 18-135 and 70-350.. Obviously it won't be as sharp at that price but maybe sharp enough to make the compromise. We'll have to wait for the reviews

You're absolutely right. I've considered the 70-350 a number of times, but I've always held off because I wanted it be a bit wider at the short end. This lens would solve that, without sacrificing too much on the tele side of things. Not to mention it's cheaper, and weather sealed. Honestly, the optics would have to be pretty poor to convince me not to go for this one over either/both of the Sony lenses.

Yes, the range is 16.67 times starting at the same minimum focal length, vs 7.5 of the 18-135. And it's weather sealed. But for me the size is important too, 75 mm diameter x 126 mm long vs 67 x 88. Not much of a difference, but it's there. If optics turn out better than 18-135 I'll probably take the size and weight inconvenience for an everyday lens, or travel.

Really not sure why there arent any reviews around, considering that the lens is supposed to be released in a few days.

Here is a YouTube review in Japanese. The useful part is that they show 100% in center and corners.

My take is that 18mm is good at f8, 50mm is good all round, 100mm seems best at f8 and 300mm seems ok at f8. These superzooms are usually good in the center at wide aperture, better at f8, and give decent sharpness across the frame at f8.

If that is a reasonable trade-off, then it should be a workable versatile lens.

Thanks for sharing Mario. Lens looks very promising for sure. Looking at my 27 inch monitor the pics are sharp. I'm definitely interested in this almost all in one (I wish it started at 16mm though like 16-240mm) lens. It'll be great for travel for sure. It might be even a decent lens for sports in daylight outdoors.

Interesting video. The 18-300 is no G lens but it looks reasonably sharp.

Aperture range stated, roughly:

F/3.5 from 18-22mm

F/4.0 about 24-40mm

F/4.5 about 40-65mm

F/5.0 about 65-90mm

F/5.6 about 95 to 170mm

F/6.3 from 170-300mm

Looks impressive, if a little heavy (though I guess that's inevitable given the focal range). And I bet I'd keep forgetting to disable the zoom lock switch... Still, I'm more than a little tempted.

Thanks, very interesting! After downloading and pixel peaking on the full size RAW-files I am not so sure if I want that lens any more, but that's just me being so spoiled by the 16-55f2.8 and 70-300 combo. The lens gives a fantastic range otherwise and allows an RX10III/IV like use of the A6###

Mario, thanks for the video link and test shots.
In my opinion, everything is acceptable for such a wide range of focal lengths.

Hi Dirk, I know what you mean.

I have mixed feelings about the lens, based on these samples. Would really need to see different samples from other sources first before making a final decision.

I also wonder if the APSC lens isnt playing as nice with the crop mode of the A7RIV. The official Tamron samples taken with an a6600 did seem better quality to me.

Further investigation required.
