'You don't take a picture, it's given to you'

above ... woolly ... wrapped up ... winter warm light .. cosy
perhaps . but those look like pyjama bottoms like my son has so its
an unusual image for me .. pyjamas, grapes, wrapped up and I think
sunset light ..
Yes late afternoon light, plastic grapes, funny outfit and walking there for a time on the rails in her own world.
foggy or bright .. joy .. shouting ... whistle of the wind ...
this woman does not look like she is on her own to me ... to my eye
there are others behind her out of the frame, she has just got
there first .. perhaps she is shouting "come on" to the people
behind her ...
Haha yes she must have felt very happy, look at this picture taken a few seconds earlier (maybe she ran to the see screaming 'I'm happy', I was to far for hearing sounds from them :

I love this picture because of the great background and that red
cap standing out .. and the frizbee also to the right ... however
unless you clone out the frisbee Dirk ... then its obvious he is
not alone .. :-) .. he just missed his catch ( by the way I may
well be completely mistaken about it being a frizbee ) anyhow thats
what I perceive .. he just missed catching it and I think someone
else had thrown it .
As I remember, someone else has thrown it (the people behind can't be seen, he's walking on (don't know the name but try to describe it, kind of a elevated stone slang in the sea to break the waves).
this one is perhaps lonely .. which one though is lonely? the
statue asking why does she not talk to me or the person looking out
to sea ? its not clear to me, perhaps they both are
very fun this but as soon as she saw you its not lonely anymore
because she is now "there - with you" if you had her before I think
it could have been lonely ... but now its for me definately "
interaction with a :-) " or body language
No she didn't saw me at that moment, she was looking at a man repairing a bike in the shadow area near to the wall, must have a picture of that scene to.
this is a face that has smiled a lot, look at those laughter lines
and the piercing clear eyes .. I remember series of pictures of
this man and he always looked full of brightness ..
Good memory, indeed he has eyes full of life in all the other pictures.
its possible this guy is lonely but I think he is caught up in some
celebrity gossip or other .. some tittle tattle of some kind in the
magazine and is lost to the world for the moment .. daydream .. own
little world
I think that he's posing and doing that he's reading a magazine so to look acting normal but.... he forgot to put his glasses on his nose, he must have been confused by the so lonely feeling.
stunning .. lovelly image this one ... "luminoscity"
the gaze of the smaller hunter :-)
Wished that she would sit there a few seconds longer, I was trying to find interesting angles to catch this special light effect (small part of sun falling trough the trees).
this is a lovelly light picture .. I think I should be hearing clip
clip .... clip clip as he walks across the hard light floor ... in
the empty room ..... oh no who stole all the pictures !! :-)
Mark the sound was clac, clac, clac... Haha fun the stolen pictures!
thinking "outside the box" ...... grin there used to be someone who
was always urging people to do that in here do you remember, very
amusing image that one ..
Oh yes I remember, a pity that I didn't post that then without words.
Great to see this set of images Dirk, I always enjoy your pictures,
hope that my comments do not offend in any way but I do think there
is too much joy in many of them for there also to be lonelyness.

Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for your always interesting and honest comments and not to forget the fine humor. Oh not offended at all, think that I'm not easily offended, if people write their honest thoughts some could disagree but everyone has the right to his own thougts and vision. And sorry for mixing the words alone and lonely, will not forget that in the future. Wish you and yours all the very best.

With very kind regards,

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

This is a lovely set of images though I agree with others that I
don't find the gut-wrenching emotion of loneliness in them. Each
image is a pearl unto itself and there are three that I
particularly like. The first image has the greatest charm of
all....the capture of the little girl in mid-step with the arms out
as if to balance on the trolly track is exceptional. The man on the
park bench I recognize from your archive and it's one of my all
time favorites...I especially like the eyeglasses on the bench and
the red socks.I also like the wide angle perspective, the
simplicity and the clean muted colors of the image of the young man
with the backpack.
The mental image I have of loneliness is of a sad-faced child
standing alone, apart from a group of other children having fun
playing together.
It's good to see your work again, Dirk.

Best regards,
Jim
Hi Jim,

Glad to hear you, always fine to read your comments and I still didn't found the pictures of the Aston Martin or was it Austin Healy . I admit that I mixed up the words lonely and alone, the first series where more fitting the word lonely I think. Thanks for the very fine appreciation and it was so beautiful to see that cute girl walking there on the rail in late afternoon light in her own world.

And you have a good memory, the man on the bench was posted before indeed, and I like it for the same reasons as you, without the glasses on the bench it would has much less impact.

Ah maybe this is coming near to what you have in mind, or maybe it could be also called 'neglected' but that leads often to feeling lonely I think. Wish you and yours all the very best.

Dirk

Hi Alex,

Thanks very much for your great appreciation and go for it Alex, I also feel that I still have to learn a lot. There was no PS work in the picture with the cat, it was a small part of sun light falling trough the trees and I had to react very fast as I was afraid that the cat would not sit there for long, here's another from that scene, she was already walking away :

The old woman seems lonliest simply because she seems to have
nothing to do. All the other either have something to do or are
going somewhere.

Her cause seems hopeless.

Jamil
Hi Jamil,

Glad to hear you, hope everything is fine and do you still run out of the house in the snow in your pyjama ? What a fine and funny series was that, I still remember it. Oh the woman had something to do, she was looking to a man repairing a bike in the shadow. But impressions of a part of a scene can be so different from reality, that also makes photography so great.

With very kind regards,

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Your positioning of the subject in the frame adds to the sense of being alone. As you stated, these people seem to be alone but not lonely. I like seeing photos grouped together like this. What makes the series even better is the high quality of the individual images.

'You don't take a picture, it's given to you'

I've grouped some other pictures on the theme so lonely but this
time with a more happy feelig in them (in my opinion). My interest
in photographing people is still growing and soon I will try to
make series to capture emotions or I must say to illustrate
emotions as what is seen in a picture is only a split of a second
and can give a complelely other expression that what was happening
in reality. Always interesting to know which you prefer as in many
series I see that there are many differences. Maybe I will post a
part 3 on the theme so lonely but then focussing on animals, they
can feel also very lonely and express it very well. Hope you enjoy
these pictures.

Dirk

Hi Alex,

I was fascinated to see that the ligt stain where she was sitting looked liked an inversed shadow, really a pity that she didn't stay a bit longer. Loved also the green eyes in combination with the green grass. Sometimes we can be very lucky.
