X100v vs X-T4

I'm torn. Those of you who made the decision, which did you pick? I know, I know. I'm going to get the standard "it depends on your needs, budget, etc".

If you could tell me *your* reasons for picking one over the other, I'd really appreciate it.
Why restrict yourself to only one camera?

X100V. I wanted something small and portable and I also wanted the experience of using a rangefinder type camera. I was debating between the X100V and the Olympus Pen-F, but even though I own a lot of Oly gear, ultimately the X100V won me over with the optical viewfinder, the larger sensor, and the film simulations.

I'm so glad I made that choice, this is the best camera I have ever owned. It's beautiful, fast, and produces stunning images. You can also customize it with all kinds of accessories to make it uniquely your own.

The fixed 35mm equiv. lens is actually quite liberating, it forces me to actually think about framing and composure, and that has resulted in some of the best images I've ever taken.

Well I took a hard left turn and ended up in the Leica parking lot. I picked up a Q2 earlier this week and moved on from the x100v. It was great but left me wanting. So, here I am, with a completely gorgeous piece of photography machinery and eyeing some of their ILC options. 🤔 uh oh. 😂

Yeah, a bit too expensive for me, I have too many other hobbies to support.

I was reading this thread for enjoyment, and I DID NOT see this twist coming. 🤣
Me neither. I am very happy with the Q2. Selling my X-T4 gear covered the cost. Luckily for me!
I predict a thread saying that you are sick of using only a 28mm and you want to come back to Fuji... in the near future. ;)
Yeah, while I enjoy shooting with my X100V, I don't see a fixed lens camera being my one and only camera, there are times when I want to do long tele, macro, and even ultra-wide, so an ILC will always be in my arsenal.

To remedy that eventuality, I am picking up a Typ 262 with a 35 mm lens. 😬

In all seriousness, I loved the freedom of having a single lens to work with. I didn’t once wish I had something different with me. The Leica is amazing. The x100v is, too, but the Q2 is on a different level, IMHO. And it should be at 4x the price!

I’ve used Leica and understand your enthusiasm… it could be a lifelong disease or just a fling. We will see. I know longer use Leica as I don’t think they are worth 4-6x the price.

“Disease” <—> “fling”? Is there room for “passion”?

When it comes to Leica, no…

Given my propensity for changing my mind, an important factor in deciding what to buy is resale value. Leica, from what I’ve seen, holds that resale value remarkably well. So, yes, it’s 4-6x the upfront cost but by percentage lost at resale relative to other gear, more than makes up for it.
LOL! Resale value of digital Leicas high? Have you checked the prices of used M9's? They were originally $7k, and now sell for $2k. If you can find one that has had the corroded glass covering the sensor replaced. A Nikon D700 from that era was $2k, and is worth several hundred dollars now. So it's an absurd stretch to argue the Leica value proposition!

Actually, rethink that... the M9 is 10 years old, has known issues, and still sells for $2000! Imagine what the D700 would be with those issues.

Em... "M9 is 10 years old, has known issues"

Skip Leica M9 which not perfect, better consider affordable and less issue D700.

Thanks for info.

agree, it’s about what tools are needed. I got a x100v and loved it till it got stolen (had the original which I regret selling). Now my x100v fix is a t3 + 35/1.4 when I want to go light and not carry my gfx.
I love the 35mm fov way more than that of the 23mm but I adore the feel, leaf shutter and the built in nd filter that I actually use. When I look back during the last 8yrs of Fuji, the best pics are from the 35/1.4 followed by 56/1.2 and a few from the 14mm - hence have not bought another one post theft.

I didn't pick one over the other (in my case XT2 versus XT4). I like having both.

After reading through your responses if becomes evident that you already are in possession of both cameras, which puts you in a better position to decide for yourself versus investing your hard earned money based on the well intended experience of others.

As others have suggested keep both and force yourself to work with the constraints or flexibilities of them. You'll lose money selling either if you purchased them new. But if you're just kicking tires and are still in the return period then don't complain later when you buy something else as new and find the product has already been tried by someone else.

Even if you were out with your XT4, there's no guarantee you will have the proper lens mounted at the moment you need it. Of course chances are better with a zoom but still a possibility.

But for me, if only one camera body, it would have to be the one that gives me the most flexibility. My X100V is strictly an option, albeit the one that is with me more than the others.

Hope you are satisfied and can rest easily with whatever decision you make.
Luckily, I got both used so if I decide to sell, I won't be out too much money. As it is, there is no time constraints on my making a decision. It's not a financial burden or anything. It's more looking at my camera gear and thinking "I need to make a decision here. I've got too much stuff."
If you think about those 2 cameras in a more homogeneous way, as in looking at the X100V like the 23mm focal length with a built in camera body, then it might just be like using a different size screw driver to assemble an IKEA Billy.

From what I read here you don't seem to have a clear vision as to what you are trying to with your tools. If you can get your head around what you shoot, then the answer might not be as difficult as to what camera you might want to keep.

In short: it should be more obvious as to what tool to use:
  • X-T4 with the 35/1.4 50/2 56/1.2 or 90/2 for portraits. People. Close up. Looking in a magnified way.
  • X-T4 with a 14 or 16mm for drama, skies, landscapes.
  • X100V for easy portability, 23mm lens, environmental portraits. People that are friends, but not intimate all the time. The waitress from the café down the road with that cute cat might feel ok if you take her photo when the cat is in it. But would feel it too intimate if you got your 56/1.2 out.
  • X100V for that night stroll in the unfamiliar city.
It seems to me you are overthinking it by quite a margin and for you it's more about owning them than actually using them.

They are tools and I think you need to figure out first what tool you need to get that blimmin nail in the wall. You seem to debate whether to actually use a hammer.

Here's a D700. $350. Or a loss of 82.5% of its value. This M9 sold for $1700 for a loss of 75% of its value. I'm not sure what your point is but it seems you've made mine for me.

I bought the GR III, and ended up returning it, I liked the size, but I didn’t find it fun to use. The autofocus was terrible, but the battery life was totally unacceptable, it’s a shame because I loved the mono profiles on it.
