Hi all, enjoying my Canon EOS RP since a few years.

i have the F4.0 - 24-105RF lens, a 200mm F2.8 and a 40mm F2.8.

now looking for a wider angle lens. Could be a zoom wide angle, could be fixed focus wide angle.

don’t want to break the bank.

any suggestions ? Good value second hand lenses I can also consider.

thanks !

EF adapter and EF lens of your choice - lots of options once you have the option to adapt.

Cheapest option if a 1.6x crop does matter to you is the EF-S 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 IS. I had that lens before I bought a FF UWA and it took fine pictures. Here are a couple I took with it.

+1 on that, there are a lot of second-hand EF lenses out there. How wide do you think is wide? What sort of quality and versatility do you want? How much are you willing to pay?

For top quality and versatility there's the EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS. The EF 17-40mm f/4 L is much lighter, cheaper and older but doesn't have good corners or IS. Older Canon wide-angle zooms are available but they weren't as good.

Or there are the 35mm f/2 IS and 28mm & 24mm f/2.8 IS primes. They all fall within the range of your 24-105mm, so their advantages are speed and size. Be aware that lenses wider than 24mm can be hard work. They demand a lot of care and precision in selecting the viewpoint and the framing, but that's what makes them so rewarding.

The EF-S 10-18mm is fine for cropped video but it makes much more sense on a 24 or 32 megapixel APS-C than on the RP sensor cropped to 10 megapixels. (And if you're happy with a 10 megapixel APS-C camera you've wasted your money buying an EOS RP.) In the long run it's an expensive option as the person who buys too cheap ends up buying twice.

I was looking around for that recently. So a few thoughts.

First, I tried my Samyang 14mm 2.8. It's actually a Pentax mount, but doesn't matter, since it's manual anyway. So with a PK to RF adapter tried it and it was pretty nice, but heavy, and manual aperture.

Second, I had replaced that just a bit later with a Laowa 15mm F4 with shift, macro. More on that in a bit, but same manual everything more since it's also a Pentax mount. Great lens though.

Third, found a used 16-35mm F4 L EF lens at my local shop. Ah, it's great. Seems to maybe be even better in resolution than the 2.8 depending on the review, but definitely good enough for me. And it takes 77mm lens filters, so great for ND and landscape. Really happy with it, and can live with the f4 since I don't care much about tight DOF at the wide end, and it's most for landscapes.

Back to the Laowa. They also make that in an EF mount, but still all manual focus AND manual aperture (de clicked, even). And it's rectilinear, not fish eye. They have a lens profile you can download for it, but it's pretty crazy wide and as long as not doing say things with very well defined perpendiculars distortion is manageable even without the profile. And it does shift; when doing so, it vignettes quite a bit on FF but still.

And it has a crazy macro capability, 1:1. I've never seen that on such a wide lens. But the focus distance for 1:1 is so tight I can put stuff on a UV filter and it will be in focus. Go a bit smaller than 1:1 and it has some very unique effects. But it can still do great, sharp regular old landscape shots. Check out reviews; they're all over Youtube.
for example. Not for everyone; got to have some experience to use such a lens, but quite fun.

I am not sure what your budget is, but I just received this along with my new R6. I have not had a chance to do any critical testing, but so far it seems good to me.

Laowa also makes a 14 mm F4 that is 2.3X2.3". I have one on order. I think it will be the ultimate travel lens.

What are you planning to shoot and what’s your budget? Economic means different things to different people.

Don't have a comment about which lens but those photos are great.

I use the Samyang/Rokinon RF 14mm AF for my Commercial Architectural photography and absolutely love it. Samyang no longer sells it, but its still available from Rokinon and the quality for the price is unbeatable.

Look on this link. I used the 14mm on all the pics on the top row of projects.

thanks for the detailed answer. Gonna dig a bit deeper in the options you suggested ! Thanks.

‘Face - palm’ - I used to own one of these with my old apsc camera. Sold it when I got my D. Nice compact and good quality lens !

Are there any 3rd party zoom options that work well with the adapter? Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, etc.

I am also in the hunt for a decent FF wide angle zoom in the $600-900 price range. For now, for landscape shoots, I am taking my M50 with the 11-22 plus the RP with a RF24-105 and EF 70-300II, which is working well but then you have 2 bodies, 2 different sensors, download photos from. 2 cards, etc.

Hope Canon releases the RF18-45 soon…little more range in the long end than my apsc 11-22.

I got me a used Tamron 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD. On the R5 my EF 24-70mm f/2.8 mkII is sharper, but if you don't pixel peep at 45Mp and stop down a little it's a decent lens.

There's no image stabilization so without IBIS that can be a downside, although it's not a big deal on a wide angle lens. The focus ring turns while (auto)focusing. Unfortunately there are no in camera corrections, but I went with the Tamron anyway because of the light weight and small size, the 35mm at the long end, and f/2.8 at the wide end.

Although true, you don't have lens changes with two bodies, and M50+11-22mm is kind of the same weight and size as an extra full frame lens. It also makes sense to have the 70-300 on the M50 next to the 24-105mm on the RP.

Yes, that's what I hate about those wide angle lenses, just missing a view mm's to be really useful as an all round lens. 40mm in stead of 35 is a big deal. 45mm is even better. A wide angle lens hitting the normal perspective would be great!

I'm using the sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 a lot, and that one isn't very long either (although 56mm equivalent in stead of 45), but it's enough to use it as an all round lens for me.

Within your specified price range, the EF 16-35 f4.0L IS is the one to get. I like my 17-40 f4.0L a lot, but mine is definitely a minority opinion. It is a lot cheaper though, $450-ish, used.

Here is one (of many) I have taken at 17mm with it.

Great purchase you did! I really like Tamron lenses. I hope they extend their mirrorless lineup to the RF mount in the future (the recently announced support to the X mount is a positive sign).

I love 50mm (equivalence)

Looks really good to me, I am a hobbyist who doesn’t pixel peep too much, so this lens would be good enough to me although the edge performance for the price from the 11-22 got me a little spoiled. I am hoping the 18-45 will match that somehow.
