Japan's favorite camera brands - article

My favorite lens is a 50mm 1.4 SMC. I would consider buying Pentax if they ever went back to mirrorless. They don't even have to make a new mount. Just continue where they left off from the K-01
Except the K-01 was a dog of a camera and I say that as a Pentax user, so I'm not brand bashing.
2012 was a long time ago. The same year my EOS M came out and that camera got flamed.

Regardless I wonder why? There usually an obvious reason if your on the ground. Like Japanes hate of PC computers till they solved the language problem.
Pentax has always been a favorite on the Japanese market, and Pentax has always been a very Japanese centric brand. So it is nothing new that Pentax is popular in Japan.
Nobody said it was new.

Yes a friend had one and my opinion is based on my experience of the time. It was one of the many Pentax misfires, which led to the situation that the company finds itself in today.

I think many people have nostalgia and warm memories of the brand. But hardly anyone is buying Pentax, in or out of Japan.
(USA) In the film era, Pentax was a popular mainstream brand. My local camera store had special Pentax events, with Pentax representatives on hand. That store is still in business, but no longer sells Pentax cameras. Here, the brand has shriveled into obscurity.
Seems like everyone and their brother has a similar post concerning Pentax.

Other than scarce market reports out of Japan, there doesn't seem to be many, if any, reports available on camera manufacturers market share in North America, Europe, etc...

I would certainly like to be corrected, if someone could post some links to manufacturers market share.... I would certainly like to read them....

Regards,

Michael

Japan has many brands that are not in North America. There a good solid reasons for this.

There are plenty of reports of global market shares, though. Here's one link, but you'll have no problems finding others:

That is from a survey from a site called ITMedia. It could be not representative, depending on who voted. For example, I've never heard of the site. What if they posted the poll, then went to all the Pentax-centric forums around the web, pointing to it, but not to Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.? If this is not the case, wouldn't it be impossible for Pentax/Ricoh to not to also be best-selling?

Let's get to that, then. When it was time to actually BUY, the winner was Olympus. (Source) In fact, four of the top ten were Olympus, and that includes 1st and 2nd place. 1st and 10th place are the same camera, same kit, but just different colors! I wonder if it has something to do with Olympus' sale to JIP, and people wanting a piece of pre-JIP Olympus history...

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out for 2021.
Here's a Petapixel article from May, 2021.

"While companies such as Canon, Nikon, and Sony may currently command market dominance, it’s Pentax/Ricoh that has gotten the most love."

Good points

I was in Japan from 2019-2021,

From what I saw in the streets, the tourist locations and a few photo walks, Sony and Canon APSC seems to be the most popular.

From what I saw in the streets,

Younger generation (20-30) preferred Sony, Canon and film Cameras. Also spotted few Olympus and Leicas

30-50 age group preferred Full frame DSLR and Full frame mirrorless. Mainly Sony, Canon, Nikon. Also spotted few Leicas and Fujifilm in this age group.

Above 50 is a mixed bag, ranging from 1 inch sensor cameras to medium format cameras. Mainly Spotted Leica, Sony and Canon.

Most of the women spotted with cameras had either a Sony APSC or a Canon APSC. There wer few Olympus as well. Panasonic was very rare.

I have met few Pentax users while I was there, but the number was very small.
