I'm torn. Those of you who made the decision, which did you pick? I know, I know. I'm going to get the standard "it depends on your needs, budget, etc".

If you could tell me *your* reasons for picking one over the other, I'd really appreciate it.

Both!

X100V is probably my favorite camera I’ve ever had. Small, pocketable body with a fast lens in my favorite focal length. Its a great social camera. Good for environmental portraits.

X-T4 for everything else: sports, wildlife, landscape, portraits.

Personally I'd pick the X100V as a compact, weather resistent camera which I can easily take everywhere. I also enjoy rangefinder styled cameras in general over the more traditional SLR style bodies with a middle placed viewfinder. I enjoy the 35mm focal length, so the fixed lens isn't too much of an issue for me.

I also enjoy the ability to quickly switch to the OVF and back, it's a nice to have feature for me. Same goes for the built-in ND filter which can easily be activated.

Having said that, I still have a Micro Four Thirds system with quite a couple of lenses if I need a different FL. Only owning and using the X100V would be doable to some point, but I simply feel like I'd be missing out on too many opportunities and possibilities. After all both cameras are very different and I guess the main deciding factor will be whether or not you are okay with the focal length. After all, you can't really change that on the X100V, however you easily can on the X-T4.

Is it really that hard? They are very different cameras. One fixed lens, with ease of portability prioritised, relatively weak video capability, OVF and strong on ‘retro’ appeal. The other bigger (but still compact) and a fantastic all round camera, interchangeable lenses, ibis, better EVF but a rear screen that divides opinion (I like it). Ask yourself the following:
  • Do I want the constraints of a fixed lens?
  • Is portability a key requirement?
  • Do I care care about video?
  • Is that whole rangefinder vibe important?
I would never want an X100 as an only camera… but I’m not you.

If I had to choose just one, I'd go for the interchangeable lens camera. No question. It's so much more flexible. You have the option of macro photography, astro photography, ultra-wide angle, telephoto and everything in between. No compromises. As much as I like my X100V, I confess, I would feel constrained if it were my only camera.

Once you've got an ILC, however, if you've got the spare cash, the X100V becomes very hard to resist. It's a wonderful camera and has a unique character that transcends its specification, IMHO.

...if you can go with the larger size, extra weight and higher cost. What premium do you place on smaller, lighter, simpler? That's the X100V. What premium do you place on versatility, better video, articulating LCD, IBIS for all future lenses, plus a few other advantages mentioned by others already? That's the X-T4.

X-E4: best of both worlds (I have it along with the X-100V and X-T3.)

The one big upside of the X100V is convenience, else the X-T4 is superior in just about every way.

Personally I'd never pick one over the other, because one is a fixed lens camera and the other an ILC. A fixed lens camera would never replace an ILC for me.

For me an X100x would be a complement and never a substitute for an ILC.

I picked the X-T4 because I want access to Fuji's excellent selection of X lenses, but then I really don't see these 2 cameras as being competitors at all. I'm sure that there are more than a few users who have both. But if you like keeping it simple, with one camera and one lens, the X100 is hard to beat.

Why don't you go with a X-Pro3 or X-E4? With a 27mm F2.8? At least you'll have the option of changing lenses later. Own both X-T4 and X100v, love both. And a X-Pro1 :)

I have both and love them dearly. But if we’re to just choose one, it easily would be XT4. I need different lenses for different purposes. But if your other focal length needs are covered by other system, then X100v would be fine.

They’re only competitors in the sense that I need to decide which of the two to keep. 😂

I am generally averse to having 2 of the same type of thing. I often get stuck trying to figure out which of those two things to use and wonder if I brought the “right” one with me! Particularly when I’m still relatively new to the hobby it’s hard to know which would be the right tool for the job.

It’s similar to the “which lenses do I bring with me?” dilemma I was faced with every time I took the XT4 out which ultimately led to my buying the X100V in the first place. Too many choices drive me mad.

I sold all my x-mount in favor of GF mount, kept the x100f for those times when I want simple. Like everybody else said, there are times when you really want a different focal length or something the x100 can’t do well. Otherwise, the x100f is pretty much my normal carry unless I really want the extra features of medium format.

There's your answer... keep and use the X100V until you feel you need something else.

Personally I prefer the X-Pro3 but I still have an X100V too.

I would but every time I miss a shot I could have gotten with the xt4, I regret it.

I think if the xt4 had a nice compact lens like the 23 on the x100v, it’d be an easier call. I could pretend that I just have the one lens most of the time and when I needed something more, I’d switch it out.

As it stands tonight, I think I’m going to stick with the xt4. There’s no way I could replace it easily for the same cost while the x100v wasn’t as good a deal. It’s a little bit of a convoluted way of thinking but it’s just one of many factors on my mind…
Buy a 27mm F2.8 WR for your X-T4...

That thought did cross my mind. But I really like the 23mm focal length and that f2 means fewer missed indoor shots. I have the 23 f2 for my xt4 but its like 3x as long as the 23 on the v.

I am not trying to be difficult, I swear!

At first I thought the thread title was X-100 vs X-E4. The choice I am working on.

The reasons I hang on to the X100f are leaf shutter, ND filter and the built in flash. I’m not much of a flash user, but the X100 series flash fills in just right. And at fast shutter speeds too. A unique feature.

If you are asking the question, then X-T4 for you. It’s a much more flexible camera simply because of the interchangeable lenses. The X100v is beloved by many, but very few would choose it as their only camera, and those who would, wouldn’t be asking which camera on this forum. They would already know they can be happy with just a 35mm lens.

I don’t own either, but I faced a similar quandary in the Leica world. Q2 or M? I opted for Q2, but only as a second camera. For primary I want something with changeable lenses. But for travel? Or family events? Or for any situation where I don’t have a specific image in mind? The Q2 is magic. I expect the X100v would be the same—as a second camera, not as an only camera.
