Which is sharpest lense with USM and IS

Hi Nukester,

The 70-200VR stays on my camera about 80% of the time. I love this lens. I use it for portraits, candids, sports (with TC-20EII)... the list could go on and on.

If all you are looking for is great sharp glass. Look at some primes. The nikon 180 2.8 ED-IF is one of the sharpest lens I have ever owned (I sold it to get the 70-200VR ... a decision I regret). The nikon 85 1.8 and 1.4 are very sharp as well. If all you need is sharp images go with a selection of primes. They are sharper than a zoom lens and you can find used for decent prices.

Hope this helps,
;-)
James

I now read that you are coming from another camera and are tired od the slowness of that camera. I know what you mean. I own a oly 750. I am happy with that, but the S2 is soooo much faster.

I have quite a collection of glass meanwhile and I am going to advice something people might not agree with.

I bought the 28-105 nikor peopel adviced here on the forum. it is a great lens. I also bought the tamron 90. also a great lens. then the 50 nikor. also great and sharp. I even have the 80-400 VR for my zoo shots. finally I bought the lens that is called the 'amateur' lens.... the tamron 28-300 lens. and guess what? I am sooo happy with that one. it is tack sharp, cheap and not heavy at all. I do portraits with that lens as well as animals.

here is an example. no cropping. also the original is great.

I am not sure why you need tack sharp for these type of pictures. With the lenses Darrell mentioned 16 x 20 tack sharp prints CAN be made. It does take a considerable skill level, though. A good beginning point would be the inexpensive, but extremely sharp (one of Nikon's sharpest), Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens.

Buy a good tripod, as it will make any lens, including VR sharper

So simple Steve. I hate soft pictures. I also do not like a shallow DOF

...your $$$ spent on lenses won't be wasted! Can't stress that enough. I mean a GOOD tripod. This GOOD tripod will make your $300 lens look as good as the best lenses out there if you know what you're doing.

All but the "Trip to San Francisco" gallery are with the S2/Tamron SP24-135 combo. I am completely satisfied with this excellent all-purpose lense. Whether outdoors or in studio it performs well for it's price range.

None of my pbase samples are full size files so some loss of sharpness will be noticed due to file reduction. It seems that some of my images have been "borrowed" by others who wanted to take credit for them. Hey, I'm flattered! ;-)
