Hi

i have cameras will all the Fuji sensors and my favorite is the x trans lll

nice sharp photos without being too sharp or crisp

followed by the trans Ii which I feel is great for bw portraits especially

Then the xtrans iiii, can produce great results but inferior to the trans iIII imho.

finally xtrans nothing special here does the job

I am curious which sensors you like the best and others you like less or not like at all

thanks

lc

I don't know what sensor is in the original X100 ( i presume X trans 1 ) but to my eyes that one was / is the best.

HI

The sensor for the x100 is

X100: EXR CMOS

This is the one sensor I dont own so did not mention it

What a beautiful camera the original x100 is

I'm not particularly enthusiastic about all these recent considerations of sensor generations in isolation. A camera is a package of a whole host of other factors, not limited to its sensor.

I liked the X-E2 (and its sensor) when it was my main camera. I like the speed improvements, add'l menu options, add'l front command wheel, and the AF joystick on my X-E3s, which are my main cameras now.

If I didn't already own it, I wouldn't specifically seek out a 10 year old camera body only for its sensor. Conversely, there is rarely a regression in sensor tech in newer generations, so I also would pay more attention to a new camera as a package (esp. ergonomics, functionality, AF), more than its sensor. Most if not all sensors of the last 5, maybe even 10 years are good enough for actual photographs - not test charts and brick wall pixel-peeping.

Ultimately, my favourite sensor is the one behind my Fuji lenses.

Yes, a lovely camera and one i regret selling. I also have an X-T1 and X-T2. But, the pictures i have from my X100 are by far the best. Something about them the others don't have ( even though they are good ).

HI

Many good used copies of the x100 have you thought of buying in back

We are here for a short visit and who knows if one day those in power will take our money

Time to Enjoy

Cheers

x trans iii is favorite.

x trans ii had waxy skintones...but otherwise good look to them...wouldn't go back to it, but have printed up to 24x16 with it and looking very nice.

I have owned a bunch of cameras (XE2, XE3, XT1, XT10, XT20) but they all have one of those 2 sensors...

From what I've seen x trans iv is nice, but I think x trans iii looks better at high iso.

If you are comparing SOOC jpegs, you are really comparing the processing more than the sensors themselves, with good RAW processing they are all capable of similarly excellent results in good light. I’m not a sports or video guy, so I still prefer the X-Trans III sensor for its slightly superior high ISO performance.

I agree. I actually always shoot in raw and I should have stipulated in Raw.

Sometimes will use raw plus jpeg

As someone else said, these sensors come as part of a package and there are objective improvements between the generations to consider as well as subjective opinions on the quality of the image. It’s almost impossible to separate the sensors themselves from the associated image processors, so I’m considering them one and the same here.

That said for me this is easy and not so surprising -
  1. X-Trans IV - the AWB is better IMO than the third gen, images are cleaner and have more in the shadows, and the focussing is faster and more sensitive right across the entire frame. Also gets massive props for Classic Neg which I’m now addicted to. Of the three later sensors, this is the closest to the original X-Trans in look, I think personally.
  2. X-Trans III - A good resolution bump over the older sensors and great in most regards (possibly better at lower ISOs than the fourth gen and much better than the first and And especially second), but let down slightly by some off colours in mixed lighting conditions due to AWB that never quite managed the previous or later cameras.
  3. X-Trans I - rated highly because it got so much right in its image quality, and that’s important, but also not enough - the rest of the package, particularly the autofocus, simply wasn’t there. I have tried, but I cannot go back to these older cameras now.
  4. X-Trans II - bottom of the list by far. Ok some elements of the package improved over the first gen - AF is better - but not only did the IQ completely lose any subtle quality the first sensor might have possessed, but it also introduced a disastrous noise reduction technique for jpeg skin tones, which left people at ISO 1600 and above looking downright weird. A big misstep from Fuji that they thankfully fixed in later sensors.

Least favorite: all the X-trans sensors.

But if I had to choose one of them it would be X-trans4 since it has the best DR.

If Fuji's next sensor in their high-end camera bodies will be bayer then that will be my favorite Fuji sensor :)

In general however the sensor doesn't really matter that much aside from DR and noise, it's what lens you put in front of it that matters the most.

Probably the X Pro1 sensor... for its subtle mid tones

The first X100 was a bayer sensor, 12mp

Xtrans 2 on the XT1 and X100S. Followed by Xtrans 4 on my xpro3

Shot 3 of them today

These are my top 3 sensors

1. Xtrans 4 great jpgs and better custom settings

Xs10 35mm1.4
Xs10 35mm1.4

2. Xtrans1 most 35mm film like sensor ever made

Xe1 + Konica hexanon 40mmF1.8
Xe1 + Konica hexanon 40mmF1.8

3. Xtrans 3 I love it but it lacks the vibe of the 1st sensor. Great for astrophotography

Xt2 35mm1.4
Xt2 35mm1.4

I have two cameras with X-Trans III[ but i like x-trans 4 because it has good focusing. than mine. Focusing important to me than little bit other things which I don't bother.

I own/have owned one xe2, 2 xt1, one xt20, one xt3.

To this day i am still in love with the images shot on my xt1's.

Least fav? Hard to say... I like them all but the xt1 stands out as a winner for me

Try the back button focus technique.

I used those first gen cameras for around two years, believe me I’ve tried the back button focus technique! With latest firmware the autofocus on an X-Pro1 isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not great either, that’s just the way it is. Some can live with it just fine, and good luck to them.

I only have X-Trans 2 and 3 to compare with, but I know X-Trans 3 is still competitive at high ISO, and X-Trans 2 can still give excellent tonal quality at base ISO.

A lot of the time I use the X-E3 just for its expanded controls more than anything.

Overall I would still have to rate X-Trans sensors in the order of release (newest being best), but the independent score for each would be something like an 8.5/10 X-Trans 4, then a 8/10 X-Trans 3, then 7/10 X-Trans 2, and maybe a 5/10 for X-Trans 1 just because high ISO degrades so quickly.

Almost all of my pictures are on a Tripod and Manual Focus so AF capabilities don't factor in.
