Did Sigma fix focus problems with 16mm?

I remember there were a lot of discussions some time ago about focus problems for the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens in AF-S. Did Sigma ever solve this through a firmware update?

I haven’t used my camera for quite a while due to the pandemic, but yesterday I finally got a chance. I took the same picture with AF-S and AF-C on the Sigma 16mm, and the latter definitely came out sharper.

I have an A6000.

The afs issue has not been fixed. Personally, for me its not a problem as I use afc with bbf.
Does anyone have the Sigma 16mm? Do you still have focus problems in AF-S?

I can see there is a recent firmware update for the 16mm, but it doesn't say anything about solving the focus problems. It seems not easy to do the update (not even available for Mac Big Sur), so I will not do it unless it solves the focus problem.

I found old threads like this:

But nothing newer. So, I assume that means there's no solution?

I don't have Sigma lenses, but maybe there is a question, if you really need to use AF-S mode? I'm in AF-C like in 99% of shooting.

Thanks. I don't really understand how bbf solves the problem. The idea of AF-S is that it locks the focus. But using bbf just seem to move the focusing action to AEL rather the half-pressing the shutter button. So, with AF-C it just start the tracking with AEL rather than half pressing the shutter button. I don't see how to make it lock focus?

Why use AF-S? With AF-C you never know what the camera will focus on. It might decide to change the focus to an irrelevant branch in the foreground a fraction of the second before you take the shot. With AF-S you can decide what to focus on by moving the camera a little around and then lock the focus. In some sense, AF-S is midway between AF-C and manual focus. So, it's really bad it doesn't work with Sigma lenses.

I am not sure you understand how bbf and afc work together. The focus will never "jump" to anything. You focus and then you can release the focus btn and click the shutter btn. So the focus always stick to whatever you focus on. I shot that way anyway, with any lens (including native sony).

Anyway its your decision, hope I helped.

You're right, I misunderstood bbf. After experimenting more with the camera, now I get it! That solves the problem. I can also see that bbf with any lens is better than AF-C/AF-S. I will try to get used to it. Only issue is I cannot let anyone else use the camera, like my wife. But perhaps one can temporarily switch to AF-S just by toggling AF with shutter.

Thanks for the help!
