Magnum photographer Carolyn Drake is leading a seminar on documentary photography, tomorrow, 5/14.

I'm interested in the topic, so I signed up and I'll provide some commentary in a follow-up thread. It's not free, but it's also not expensive (cheaper than a book).

You can see her work here: https://carolyndrake.com/

Wow. So the seminar was definitely worth it, as the price was quite reasonable. Also, periodically, Carolyn would take questions. This was nothing technical (e.g., camera, exposure, etc.). The overview was more of how she conceived of the necessity to collaborate in producing documentary material. Some of it was very meta, and seemed to dip toward someone like Roger Ballen.

If you are interested in an art orientation to photography, this is a very good series. Think, original-works-that-could-end-up-in-a-museum exhibition more than a commercial production.

Appears more as art photography than documentary ..creatively reimagining Carolyn says.

Hmmm. Art photography ? The images are strongly aesthetic, and constructed, rather than a photojournalistic moment. Just speaking for me, I found her documentary orientation to be a nudge. I believe there is an honesty in the collaboration, where it's obvious that everyone knows that a camera is present. Maybe if Carolyn was a writer, her category would be narrative non-fiction.

Next month I'm hoping to do some street photography with some friends, and I'll be thinking of her work as I capture images.

narrative non-fiction, yes absolutely.

I already had a look at yours, I thought you were established (without need to look at anyone else). You are very styled,

I hope you post, your photography is very bold. Love the image of everyone watching the sky ..

Oh, thanks Yonnie, didn't anticipate any comments on my own documentary style. With the surge of smartphones, everyone is a photographer and I felt a need to present some visual credentials.

Along with our dialog on the characteristics for documentary photography, what do you think of Kosuke Okaharas ?

I am more about Street Photography because to me it surpasses art, and also because it is amateur and where the truth is found instead of the 'manufactured'.

In order of likes, my favourite topics of photography are ..
  1. Street
  2. Street
  3. Street
  4. Street
  5. Street
is honest, truthful. Is the truth when you can see the photographer in the photograph instead of what they want to look like. You do weddings ..you should know what I mean, beautiful brides and grooms and all that.

You should do Street. You would be good. Can see that. In fact you would be really good, can see that too.

Love Street ..you should do some when you go with your friends.

Proper Street I mean

No space aliens, but I did work at a place that expected me to take calls from the public about UFO sightings. Great fun as nearly all of them were drunk.

I did race cars in my past, but my retirement plan does not include a garage to keep up with flogging a car.

Oooooh, THREE oscillators! Hot stuff!

:-D
