Has anyone read the ebook from Thom Hogan? Is it any good? I am thinking of purchasing this ebook, but there are no sample pages available for preview.

I find Thom’s ebooks quite helpful, including the ones covering the original Z7&6 (now in the third edition) and the newer one covering the ZII7&6. They are long and there may be parts you don’t need or want to read. But they are very good on autofocus, settings and customizations, with discussion of the alternatives and why you might choose one or the other. Useful as a systematic way to help learn the Z system and also useful as a reference to look up specific topics or issues.

I've gotten a number of his guides over the years. They are thorough and in depth. Two complaints: He charges for updates that wrap in firmware upgrades. Newer guides cut and paste from previous ones and sometimes he gets a bit careless with his editing. Nevertheless I recommend them.

I don't have any Thom Hogan's book, but I have some from Steve Perry.

His books are constructive and detailed, and every time he makes some update for small correction or new firmware, the updated book is free of charge for the owner of the previous version.

I suggest Perry's book as an excellent alternative.

I have bough his Z7 guide. It is very complete and in depth. Problem is, it's almost too much. He copies and pastes stuff from other versions and that's fine since at least half of the stuff is the same anyway. Yet what happens is that what is actually not the same to other models or past iteration of your camera gets kind of lost in the avalanche of everything else. Not a big deal since there is a table of content, but yet it is not like it's a good read from cover to cover with hopes of just learning stuff you were not aware of along the way. You really have to see these books as reference books to which you can go look for specific information, not something you are going to read from cover to cover.

Actually, the two authors are complimentary. I have Thom's first Zed book, which helps as reference etc, and Steve's AF book is indispensible IME but it's no camera manual about all the specific models

Steve's focus on exposure and AF as generic subjects across current Nikon gear. Thom's are a series of extremely detailed guidebooks/manuals to the different cameras.

David Busch also writes a series of similar 3rd party books on Nikon cameras

Thom's books are very, very thorough to the point of being dense and hard to get through, IMHO.

I'd like to see him give a high level summary of sections, and then have a "drill down" link where you can get into all the arcane detail that he delights in writing about.

I can confirm that in the past Thom was charging for an updated manual that was covering a new firmware version, but this wasn't the case for the Z6 and Z7 manual. He handled it differently this time.

Anyway, I don't expect any major Z6 firmware upgrade, so I expect the current version of the manual is the last one.

You are right about this. Apparently updates for the Z manuals are included. Thanks for clarifying.

I agree that Steve’s and Thom’s ebooks are complimentary. I have and use both and have benefited from each. Both recommended. (I haven’t seen David Busch’s books, so no comment there, pro or con.)

I've used various camera guides from Thom Hogan but not the Z series guide. If it is anything like Thom's other ebooks, it will detail operational differences between camera models, which can be very handy info. I also appreciate his suggestions for configuring cameras for different situations. A couple of hours perusing Thom's guide often saves me hours of figuring things out using a Nikon user manual and trial-and-error lessons.

Anyone got Mastering the Nikon Z6 by Darrell Young.

I'd be interested in any actual owners opinions

It gets some good reviews so I was thinking of giving it a try.

I've got the Z6ii and he's got a version for that coming but not until September !

wow... I just tripped over this old post and wish I had known about Steve Perry before! I am now getting his AF for mirrorless ( yep I have been having issues with Z7 ) AND his workshop for focus stacking which I SOOOO wish I had several years ago and still know I do not have it all figured out. This is first entire workshop I have seen for focus shift/ focus stacking and all the articles I have read in past did not answer my questions .... :)

Thank you for the comment! Just bought the book.

How do you get the update? I only see a request to pay for it.

I purchased the 1st edition.

Thx

I don't think that there is an "update" to the first edition. The second edition requires another purchase.

From the "Complete Guide to the Nikon Z6 and Z7":

https://www.sansmirror.com/bythom-mirrorless-books/complete-guide-to-the-nikon-5.html

"Everyone that bought the first or second edition of the book should receive an email about how to get the third edition (check your Junk/Spam folder, as it comes from an automated system). There are almost 100 new pages of material in the third edition over the first, and the entire book has been re-edited from stem to stern to make it the most accurate and complete product available for the Z6 and Z7."

Can anyone advise the price of upgrading the second edition to the third edition? I bought the second edition, but did not get the email explaining the upgrade fee and process. I emailed Thom to ask about this, but have not received a reply.

It's a good enough book and affordable enough that I could just buy it again with no discount, if necessary, though naturally I'd be happy to take advantage of the upgrade discount if I could find out how to do so.

I have not seen the email to update either. Stay Safe!

I don't have this book but I bought Darrell's book for the D750. I found that book very informative and useful. I will buy Darrell's book on the Z7ii when it is available.
