Image Sync app woes

Hi All,

I work peripherally in a tech support capacity, but in spite of that I have to confess that I am baffled by this Image Sync app. I cannot get it work for the life of me!

iPhone 12

Ricoh GR III (brand new)

- 1st question: Does the camera need to be connected via Bluetooth (BT) AND wireless LAN to transfer images to the iPhone?

- If so, which comes first? I've been able to connect via BT, but when I try to connect to the camera's wifi, it connects for a moment and then says "internet not connected" (under the camera's wifi name in the wireless settings of my iPhone).

- I can see the pictures in the camera in the Image Sync app (even though it says the wifi is not connecting), but when I select one or more RAW file and tap the download icon on the lower right, the app just sort of blinks for a second and nothing happens.

I'm usually pretty good at this sort of thing (I actually help test iPhone apps as part of my job), and so it's particularly maddening that I can't get this to work!

The instructions are not clear as to whether both or either/or BT/ Wifi connections are needed to transfer pictures.

Also, is there a way to transfer them wirelessly to my Windows 10 PC?

Please have mercy; any help welcome!

Thx,

Its fairly straight forward, just pair the device and connect. I know thats not too helpful.

Im only android but the answer to this is No, you do not need to use BT but it helps as you can conect faster when the camera is off for instance and connects the wireless.

Even if BT is used, the file transfers are always done via the cameras wireless.

If you dont use BT then you need to connect to the camrras wireless manually.

If its saying internet not conned thats because youve tried to connect to the cameras wireless. Its possible that your phone is automatically detecting this and disconecting the camera to reconect the internet.

Probably camera wireless has s been disconected.

You can use BT and wireless or just wireless but the transfer always uses wireless only.

Dont know as card reader transfers are faster.
Please have mercy; any help welcome!

Based on another thread, I formatted my SD card and now the transfer works with the GRImageViewer app flawlessly with ONLY a WiFi connection to the camera (see other thread).

I'm bailing on the Image Sync app, because for some inane reason it also wants to pair via BT.

Thanks for the reply!

Yea I think I know that thread. 😁

Can you test please what happened to me if you're in iOS ecosystem?

It looks like if you are backing up your card via card reader into iOS devices and reinsert card back into camera wireless application will stop working.

I remembered that I had taken the SD card and put it in the card reader connected to my Mac Mini (M1 chip), copied photos to the Mac, geotagged them using a yet another third party app, copied those now-geotagged photos back on to the SD card, overwriting the same-named originals. When I later put the SD card in the card reader on my PC (not Mac), I looked at what was on it, and indeed it seems like the Mac put "extra" stuff on the SD card. Sorry, I didn't get a screenshot...

I'm not up for trying Image Sync again, as the GRImageViewer app "just works" and I don't have dig into the wireless settings on my phone in order to get it to work each and every time (like I have to with Image Sync)!

Thanks.

I don't think that behavior is related to the wifi camera connection and devices.

I think if your card will not be removed from camera both application will work. Those applications will interact with content from card and will stop working, downloading images.

Regards

I may be wrong but, as I understand it, the transfers are always by WiFi.

If Bluetooth is involved then that's only there to set up the WiFi connection for you.

If I understand correctly Bluetooth is used for continuous connection with smartphone for storing image location while in the field.

Incredible, this is the solution for this problem. I tried also other apps for sync - paid two times 10€ for the GR Lover and GR Remote and 5€ for GRImageViewer - but was not able anyway to fix the problem until I formatted the SD Card in the Ricoh camera. Who would easily think or anticipate that the problem is the formatting or writing on Mac on the SD card???

Wow! Thank you for sharing the solution.

I was deeply disappointed because I also bought the Darkroom App to be able to edit my images directly on the iPhone. So I spent about 85 € and it didn’t work … now it works – at least. Though wasting 25€.

Still annoying and strange from a programming point of view. Why can’t the Ricoh and the other apps not properly read the data from the SDCard? Very strange… And no hint anywhere in the manual
