Exposure compensation in Manual Mode with auto ISO Olympus OMD-E5

Is it possible to adjust exposure compensation (EV) while in Manual Mode with Auto ISO on? I have scoured the manual and spent a lot of time unsuccessfully trying to do this. If it is possible, how please?
You can't with the EM5mk2, so I doubt you can with its predecessor.

I had the same question with my EM1 2. I found info here that explains exposure compensation is not active in M mode.

This thread's OP asks whether EC works with Auto-ISO in M-mode.

As I replied, the EM5mk2 doesn't, so its predecessor mostly likely doesn't either.

However, the EM1mk2 (and the EM5mk3) does (though only for stills, as explained in the thread you linked to, e.g. here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63544892 (last paragraph) and here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64286239 (&gain, last paragraph)

I know it works with the 5.3 (and I am pretty sure it does with the 5.2 but I loaned mine to my nephew so cannot confirm)...

Press and hold whichever button exposure compensation is assigned to, turn one of the dials. Release the button when satisfied. (I believe the 5.1 only has one dial so the choice is simple).

According to the manual on the E-M1 III, I would think the OMD cameras now have this feature.

As a general rule, I don't trust reviews regarding things particular cameras cannot do (only correct about 90% of the time) unless it is by someone well experienced with the camera system being reviewed.

However, strawbale did encourage me to read the E-M5 II manual. On page 47 it clearly states:
  • Exposure compensation is not available in iAuto, M, or SCN mode.
But, with Auto ISO off, exposure compensation is done implicitly by changing the aperture or shutter speed.

It looks like only the higher-end models from 2016 onwards have it, starting with the Pen-F (which doesn't allow for setting a minimum shutter speed), but for stills only (unlike the Pana G9 and G90, which have this working for video too).

However, even the newer EM10-models (mk3&4) don't have it.

Yeah, E-M1ii was my first camera to allow it. It only took "N" months to also remember to flip the back panel switch to "2" to access it. I'm quick that way. :-)

Cheers,

Rick

With my penF I can set the auto iso shutter speeds for 1/30,60,125, ect .so it is possible to set chosen minimum.

Edit* that's for aperture priority so the question here is manual mode.

OMD-E5? I'll assume you mean OM-D E-M5 (mk1). This feature is not available but there is a workaround although it's limited to 3 frames at a maximum of +-1ev.

When using exposure compensation in Manual Mode with Auto ISO on a camera that has the feature, compensation is achieved by the camera changing the ISO setting.

On the E-M5 you can activate ISO bracketing, which works in manual mode with Auto ISO allowing compensation to be achieved by generating 3 images of varying brightness at 3 different ISOs (like I said it's only a workaround).

What I like about this feature is that you only take a single exposure and the bracketed frames are generated in-camera. This means you get 3 of exactly the same image at different brightness levels. Useful if you've caught the 'decisive moment'!

Edit: but are these 3 frames stored as RAW or as jpeg-only?

Depends on whether the camera is set for raw or JPEG.

Reason I ask(ed) is that I've just read in a Fuji thread that the older ones only allow for ISO-bracketing jpegs: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63729324

So I was wondering whether that's true for (some) OM-D models too, especially since this thread (probably) concerns the EM5mk1

Yeah, it's a neat little feature yet not very well known. I can bracket ISO in manual mode on my G80 but it captures each exposure seperately, hence why Panasonic just refers to it as exposure bracketing, not ISO bracketing. The Olympus method is good for following moving subjects using continuous drive mode because we get 3 images per 1 click of the shutter.

Both Pana and Oly save these as RAW (or jpeg only as apparently some older Fuji's do)?

Yes, I have the E-P5 and it records raw and jpegs in this mode.
