Seems like Sony may be worried about 300D sales :-)

Sony is a great company, certainly one of the best (if not the best) quality-wise IMHO... I bought several SONY products in the past, and I will continue to do so if the quality is not affected.

I love my DRebel, but I wish Canon's quality control were more like Sony's :)

Sony is having problems and Adam (jokingly) suggested that it was because of the 300D. It's not because of the 300D, but the joke about the 300D/F828 situtation is obvious.

the small contract electronics manufacturers in China have the same engineering capabilities and can develop products faster and cheaper than Sony. Sony has great brand recognition but now companies like Dell and Gateway...also with brand recognition...are marketing their own digicams, mp3 players and other electronic devices made in China. The squeeze is on Sony from all directions.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I've not had a lot of Sony products, but. I had a TV that lasted a couple years beyond the warranty period, a camcorder that died after the warranty period and could never be fixed, an old reel to reel tape recorder that seized up. Hmm, now that I think of it, every Sony product I've had is no longer working. (G)

I've had seven Canon cameras which have all been pretty good. I had to return an S10 for factory service due to a faulty shutter button, and had to ship my G1 in for pixel remapping. They were both under warranty. No other problems with Canon stuff.

Personally, I think all the major players in the electronics industry are probably pretty equal when it comes to quality control. I've had bunches of different stuff and there isn't a service standout among the various companies.

I don't agree. IMO Sony's days of premium quality has long gone.

I have a friend in China whose Sony TV (made in Japan in the late 80's) litterally exploded. Sony flatly refused to pay damage beyond the cost of the TV. They late claimed that the voltage in my friend's house was 238V, exceeding their TV's tolerance level -- a joke really because 238V is less than 10% higher than the standard voltage (220V) in China. This was about 10 years ago, when Chinese consumers had no effective legal venues to protect themselves.

I have stopped buying Sony products since then -- unless I don't have a choice.

Nikon still uses Sony CCD sensors for their D100. Most likely, Nikon's "D70" (their answer to the 300D) was probably going to use the same basic 6mp CCD sensor in much the same way that the 300D and 10D share the same basic 6mp CMOS sensor. But unlike Canon, which makes its own sensors and was able to find ways to decrease the production costs of their 6mp CMOS sensor for use in the significantly less-expensive 300D, Nikon still is sourcing their sensors from Sony. I think Sony's situation greatly decreases the chance that Nikon is going to get any price breaks on Sony 6mp CCD's for use in a much lower-priced D70. Nikon is now making their own 4mp LBCAST sensors for their much more expensive D2H, but I think that technology is still a long way from finding it's way into lower-priced DSLR cameras.

The sensor remains the most expensive part of a DSLR camera. And as long as Nikon is sourcing most of their sensors from Sony, and Sony is financially ailing, that really limits what Nikon can do with their camera competitiveness. It took a long time for Nikon's D100 to price-match the Canon 10D. It may take a good while longer for Nikon to have a model to price-match the Canon 300D.

There will be 20,000 people plus families and dependents who probably won't see the joke.

Your DR is part Sony ya know!! If you took off the LCD cover on the back and look at the LCD itself it'll probably be a Sony... The 10D's is like that anyhow and I imagine many other digicams with brand names would turn out to use many Sony products. The CCD sensors in most digicams are Sony, including the Canon point n shoots. Canon does make their own CMOS sensors for the DSLR lines..

From what I understand the problem is mostly in TVs, though Sony has had a bad year in a lot of areas, including movies.

The issue with TVs from what I've heard is that Sony has missed the boat on flat screen TV's -- they have no product in the fastest growing and most lucrative catgegory.

Daniella,

The article is actually quite serious. My post was simply a light hearted joke referencing the recent spirited discussions (mainly in the Sony forum)regarding the D300 vs. F828.
where do you read something about the 300d in there?

yes but how do you know how Sony sales are for the digital cameras? I thought they had a good share of the market? did that change with the 300D? or is it still only a fiew people who switched over?

just curious about that for sometimes.
