The Lumix S5 is a astonishingly capable camera - the focusing, even firmware v 1 is lightning fast..

I agree Panasonic has amazing Lowlights focusing speed for still photography. My Panasonic GF6 can easily focus @~4ev in lowlights where both my Canon & Nikon dslr struggle, even with external flash using IR Assist.
Ok for continuous tracking which yes I will in due course update to firmware 2 , well we shall see.
Sadly this is the BIG BUT, you choose to glide over with sugar-coating.

Panasonic DFD sucks @continuous AF. So bad, that switching over to S~AF actually improves ur keeper raters taking action shots. C-AF is easily the worse weakness of Panasonic system: both M43 or L mount.

Panasonic DFD sucks @Vdeo AF. AF hunt is constant and non-stop. You can easily tell by the pulsating Bokeh highlight I'm video. Panasonic DFD keep 2ns guessing itself. This maybe find for casual 3min vacation video (but) complete failure for Professional & vlogging as constant AF hunts becomes a sore annoyance. When it comes to Panasonic Manual Focus become a a requirement, not a luxury. It is the main reasons why many Gh2/Gh3/Gh4 owners reluctantly switch to Sony for video production.

I wish people Stop Making Excuses for Panasonic poor CDAF DFD.
  1. Stop using manual focus as an excuse for poor video tracking
  2. the world is going increasingly Video-Centruc
  3. Camera are now Judged by Continuous AF ability
  4. A camera that cannot Tracks Face continuously without pulsating will always be judged as Inferior
It is time to DUMP cdaf-only DFD.

If the next Gh6 still used DFD, then Panasonic might as well closed shop。Between the excellent Sony Real Time tracking & Canon ultra-reliable Dual-CMOS AF, Panasonic simply can't compete keep using the "sometimes" reliable but often not DFD system.

Gaslighting people over the inferiority of CDAF-only DFD AD is a waste of time. Why not use the resources to create an Hybrid PDAF/CDAF systems that has proven itself. Panasonic stubborn refusal to add PDAF is what is killing the system, not Sony or Canon。

While not the best for tracking, I find it good enough for most use. And the S5 seems to be doing pretty well. There is still a market for photographers, and for those, the Pana L-mount is hard to beat.

I went from Sony A7rii to Nikon Z6 to Nikon Z7 to Fuji X100v to Canon RP to Olympus OMD em1 mk III and settled exhausted on Panasonic Lumix S5.
Ever heard of "It's not the camera, it's the eye behind the camera"?

If this was true, the em1 mkii/iii would drastically outperform the g9. It doesn't, in fact in some shoot outs, the g9 does better. The true weakness is in video, although with the s5 and subsequent firmware updates it is miles better then what it is was. It certainly still looses people and still get the pulsing in the background.

Where it struggles is with actions of fast moving wildlife.
For all fairness, fast moving wildlife requires dedicated fast lenses, more so than a camera, if it is a general purpose camera.

what amazes me is panasonic cameras are made out to be the ultimate video machines and they cant even do a basic task like auto focus.

Where it struggles is with actions of fast moving wildlife.
On the upside it's stellar for everything else!
Indeed!
It's definitely usable but I wouldn't call it stellar. For example if I want to focus on a single face in a group on other cameras I just point at the face, hold the AF button and recompose. On my S1 I have to either set a large box and manually switch through the face with the joystick, or set a small point and make sure the box is over their face while I'm composing and taking the shot. It gets the job done but it's so much slower than other systems.

I do portraits, groups and single portraits all the time with my S5. Never had a problem with AF. Mostly use sigma 85 or 45.

If you get into video, and want to use really great cine lenses, a lot of them are manual focus only.

I find it funny when people go on and on about the video autofocus and then proceed to use big cine lenses with no autofocus.

Panasonic is getting there.

As I said it gets the job done but other systems are easier. All they need to add is the ability to hold focus on a face while the AF button is pressed even if that face leaves the focus box and I hope they'll add this.
