Recent Dell orders

This is such a familiar story....

Back before the Fuji S602 was released, Dell ran a similar promotion to the recent 20% 10% coupon deal, with a price on the S602 that was about a hundred bucks below list. I was one of a bunch of folks who saw the deal and put in orders. Dell did everything they could to avoid filling those orders, including substituting "equivalent" cameras or flat-out cancelling some orders. They finally got around to filling some of the orders with S602s, but that wasn't until the street price had dropped to below what Dell had agreed to sell them for. And all this time, it was nearly impossible to get through Dell's telephone system to speak with a human being. And even when a human did pick up the phone, s/he inevitably was very poorly informed, since the answers were always inconsistent.

Also around this time Dell ran a close-out special on Iomega 340mb microdrives--somewhere around $70, if I remember correctly. About 2 weeks after I had placed my order I phoned up to find out what had become of my shipment. After a long time in Dell Telephone Hell I finally reached someone who admitted that Dell had oversold their meager inventory, and she offered me the opportunity to buy a comparable IBM microdrive....at list price ($150)!! I was flabbergasted a supposedly well-respected, major retailer would resort to such a blatant bait-and-switch tactic.

FWIW, I bought an 18" Dell TFT monitor from Dell about 6 months ago, and it was shipped promptly. When I had difficulty with connectivity, they quickly sent out a replacement. I wouldn't consider buying anything but a computer or a Dell-branded computer accessory from Dell.

I think you got the same deal for your camera as I did. Do you
remember who shipped yours.....I'm sure it was Airborne Express. We
had no choice. Of course I have a tracking number. Dell has even
verified that the camera was lost. All Dell will do is refund my
money, which is fine, except for the fact that I got the camera
from Dell for $719.00. That is the whole issue, in my opinion. I
was one of the few who got in on a good, legitamate deal that Dell
does not want to honor. What really makes me mad is that they will
gladly refund my money and then transfer me to sales to buy it
again for $999. Glad to here someone has gotten good customer
service from Dell, because I promise you I have not.
Well it seems to me they could at least sell you a new one for the same price that's the least they could do. I didn't realize that you have gotten your money back. You make it sound like you been left out in the cold. This changes the story by quite a lot.

Yes mine was shipped airborne.

I have not gotten anything back yet. Of course they are willing to refund my money, but it is about the principle of not wanting to honor this deal. My only complaint is that they will not replace to original item. What sense does it make that they list it for sale on their website, but won't send me a replacement? I'm sure you would be steamed if you were in my position.

It is just a lesson learned to me. Isn't that what life is all about?

I would be super P_ssed off and I would be on the phone with them evry week. I would also try and talk with a superviser or somebody in charge. I do feel for you and the price you paid is awesome that is probably why you are having problems. Like I said before I am in the process of exchanging mine so I don't know why they won't just say it's an exchange and give you a one one.

I just got off the phone with them and they say they are still available.

again, i placed it on 10/24, 9pm PST.
A question to those who ordered the Rebel from Dell in the evening
of Oct 25 or later (with the 10% discount): have you received a
shipping notice yet?

I don't think I've ever bought anything from Dell that wasn't a money loser for them. Of course it means waiting a couple weeks or in the case of price mistake mega deals ($129 desktop machines) the orders just get cancelled.

I've long since forgot about the 2 weeks I had to wait for my 300D, but still enjoy the fact that I paid $720 + tax.

If you need a camera in a timely manner it's best to shop elsewhere.
if it helps.. i ordered mine 10/24 before noon, received it this
morning (10/27)

--This production thing is just a standard form they use. I have seen it everytime I have ordered and they always give a later date but 100% of the time in my case it has shown up early.

It does not seem first-come-first-served then : ) I ordered late Friday night, and mine is still "in production".

What kind of shipping did you get? 2 or 3 day? Or did you get
ground? My first purchase from them this production thing drove me
nuts. Then before you know it it's at the front door then I get an
email saying it has been shipped.

Dell have some of the worst shipping/order tracking system that a modern high technology company can have.

What I found out is that if you go in early on a deal (like the 1st day, or sometime 1st hour), then you'll get what you ordered. If you are a late arrival, you'll be sent to the Dell Order Tracking Hell Hole.

Mine just got shipped this afternoon by Airborne Express. I ordered it on Saturday morning (10/25) as soon as I heard about the deal.

F707 with a 300D on order

Interesting - I went back to the Dell order status, and about half the time it says "in production", the other half says it shipped. If you click on the order status, and it has in fact shipped, you'll get the shiping company and a tracking number (no matter the status on the previous page). Try that - you may find it really HAS shipped!

I actually posted a similar thread but I'm glad to see you had already started one.

I ordered my camera on the 26th and it says "in production". What other folks have said is correct, it can say that the item is delayed and voila it shows up on your doorstep a day or two later. Dell doesn't even carry everything in their own warehouse, sometimes the item will ship straight from the distributor or manufacturer warehouse out to you and Dell only gets the tracking number themselves a day or two later.

I have only had one "dell hell" backorder experience. I ordered a Sony F717 with coupons when it was all the rage. I was probably one of 1000's of people to order the camera at what was obviously a below cost price (Dell was losing money on them).

My order was cancelled without any notification and I sent off a strongly worded email to Dell explaining I was a long time customer and I didn't think I had been treated fairly. It also helps that I regularly was making large purchases from them for the corporation I work for.

A manager from Dell called me up and explained how the order cancellation occurred. He then offered an extra discount if I wanted to wait for stock to come back in.

I don't really have a problem with Dell, you can frequently get stuff from them at or below what would be cost from most retailers. My only problem with Dell is their aggressive efforts to offshore most of their company to India. They have already laid off thousands of call center workers who do tech support and sent the jobs overseas.

--I have learned that if I call during the week during day time hours you can get help with people who live in the States. It is the same with sales and tech help. I can't tell you how frustrating it is talking to someone who lives in India about working out an issue on ones computer. I have problems hearing on the phone anyhow so it makes it even worse if they is an accent. Then I have just found out that they are taking calls out of the Philippines another hard to understand phone call. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against them but if would be nice to hear someone you can understand.

Your initial post didn't make it clear that they were willing to refund your money, you said "they lost my camera and won't do anything about it".

That's quite different then them not honoring a below cost price on the camera.

Keep in mind that dealer cost on the 300D kit is about $860 at $719 Dell is losing a lot of money on the camera.

I realize that's not your problem but nonetheless companies like Dell instruct their employees not to do below cost deals if they don't have to.
It is just a lesson learned to me. Isn't that what life is all about?

Well it seems that our government wants to "look the other way" when it comes to H1B Visa violations and the mass exodus of middle class tech jobs to cheap third world nations.

Although they probably view it as "spreading the wealth" it certainly is pinching a lot of honest, hard working Americans who do have a vote and will take it out on the politicians in a few years.

Airborne lost my 300D kit camera too, I paid 874.10 for it. Dell filed a claim against Airborne and sent me another camera 2 weeks later. I'm not sure why they wouldn't send you a replacement.
