Features I'd like to see in the next firmware update.

My request for firmware update for Canon EOS R5:

I've had my EOS R5 for a month now and there is a major issue with the mechanical shutter. The mechanical shutter is nearly worthless below about 1/250th of a second as photos are soft to blurry due to shutter shock. This could easily be corrected with FIRMWARE. Give the R5 the same shutter delay capabilities that are in the 5DSr!

I ALWAYS shoot my 5DSr with a 1/4 second (250ms) delay and I get crazy sharp and detailed photos. This is difficult with the R5, especially with mechanical shutter. This could also only be for a range of shutter speeds that are impacted by shutter shock.

Canon already has the code, they just need to add it to the R5.

I would like the ability to save configuration... I think this is a must feature those days with a lot of personal configuration
Agreed, if I lost my settings, I don't think I'd even remember how to configure them back. Imagine being able to export our config settings to a memory card and/or PC then being able to share the config files with friends so that they could import them into their cameras.

I would settle for a one(or two) click to change the shutter mode. If someone knows how that can easily be accomplished please share. I don't want to have to keep diving into the menu to do so.
I use C1, C2, and C3 for the e-shutter, EFCS, and fully mechanical shutter.

That's actually not a bad idea. But it'll only work if you're not already using C1/C2/C3 for a bunch of other settings.

They really need to make shutter mode assignable to a button, or add it to the M.Fn or Q menues.

  • Ergonomics
    • When I use face tracking and switching into manual mode, I want to be able to zoom in, instead of seeing a stupid message.
    • Don't hide settings, gray them out: IS Setting is sometimes hidden, depending on the lens. Always display a message, when clicking on them.
  • Working with flashes / especially with modelling lights:
    • Allow for switching between exposure simulation / no exposure simulation.
    • Allow for disabling metering, especially for while in Manual mode (this causes this overexposure to happen)
    • There might be a problem with the flash sync while below or equal to 1/200
  • Focus Stacking:
    • There might be a problem with syncronisation between the aperture blades and the electronic shutter.
  • Shutter Modes and Bit-Depth:
    • Allow for configuring the prefered bit-depth
      • For example, always choose 14-bit depth before speed.
    • Allow electronic shutter exposures to be longer than 0,5 seconds
    • Allow electronic shutter exposures to be 14 bit
  • Interval-Timer, AEB, etc:
    • Give the 10-Second Timer an option for doing up to 10 Images (like on the M6 Mark II).
    • AEB should be possible for the electronic shutter as well.
    • During AEB Exposures, the last image should be shown (like on the M6), as an option
    • Which exposure metering is used during AEB, should be independent from the first exposure of the AEB
    • Make a new kind of Interval Timer, which takes the manual exposure time into account.
      • Make intervals of less than a second possible
      • show the last image during multiple exposures
  • File-Tranfer with the Android / iPhone App
    • While the camera is set to a low (1 minute) shut down timer, the camera shuts down and the selection and file transfer sometimes with it. Fix it. Changing the shut down timer every time is cumbersome.

Change the Android / iPhone App as well:
  • Allow for full zoom (15x) and precise remote manual focus, should be awesome for astro-photography

  • Focus Stacking:
    • There might be a problem with syncronisation between the aperture blades and the electronic shutter.
... while Manual Focus is switched on, a high shutter speed is used and the aperture is stopped down. (Maybe only an EF-Lenses)

Focus stacking with mechanical shutter or EFCS so I can use strobes. I see no reason why it only works with electronic shutter.

Keep viewfinder magnification between exposures (custom function).

Just use EFCS: problem solved. No need for delay.

EFCS can under certain conditions create bokeh artifacts. For example, instead of a fully round bokeh ball, it could be more like a half circle.

Flash exposure, when using more than one flash. My old EOS 650D (from 2012) could set different exposure compensations for the built-in flash and for externally triggered flashes. In this way, I could have most of the light come from the external and just use the internal to do a discrete fill-in.

My EOS Rp has one exposure compensation for Flash, and it controls both a unit in the hotshoe and externally slaved units. I would like to be able to control the flash in the hot-shoe differently from the externally triggered flashes.

These conditions are shutter over 1/1000s when you don't have shutter shock issues...

  • 10-bit, 420 option. This mode would make it much easier to edit w/o having to create proxies. (422 is really only rarely needed for green screen work.)
  • Raw lite for 8k video. (Believe they are working on this.)
  • CLOG-3
  • Across the board better compression w/o degrading footage. (Sony does an excellent job of this, making file sizes much more manageable.)

FV mode

- follow minimum shutter speed setting for auto ISO

- metering indicator when in full manual

- option of using 4 dials for direct access to changing parameters

custom button assignments

- let us assign photo/video toggle to buttons other than m.fn button

- electronic first curtain / mechanical / full mechanical shutter toggle / or saved as custom button assignment

- toggle full auto or specified af start point for face detect / tracking via custom button

view mode

- have a slr mode, with live view in evf, and review and menus on the lcd

interval shooting

- start time delay (no need to wake up at 4 am)

- exposure smoothing

Hopefully, firmware update to display exact focus distance either on shooting information display &/or playback information display.

Reason:-

As of now, the estimated focus distance display could be shown at the shooting information display and the graduations between each of them is too extreme such as from 0.21, 0.25, 0.38, 1 to infinity (m) or 0.69, 0.8, 1.25, 3 to infinity (ft).

Is there any means to display the exact focus distance on either or both the shooting information display &/or playback information display?

Among other things, they have included the focus length, aperture etc on the playback information display but could not find any where to include exact focus distance.

Only a couple, both have to do with sound.

I don't know how many times I thought I clicked on the red button that switches from photo to video, only to find out later that I didn't press the button hard enough and ended up turning on the video when I was actually trying to turn it off. I had this problem in the late summer, and now that it's winter, the problem is even worse as I'm usually wearing a thin pair of gloves.

1. This is a must. I want to be able to hear an audio cue when I turn on video and a different sounding audio cue when I turn it off. With the option to turn this feature on or off in the menu and the option to raise the volume higher or lower.

I find that I rarely use Electronic shutter mode simply because I have no feedback on how many photos I've taken. Supposedly you can tell how many photos you've taken by the flashing border in the viewfinder, but I don't find this very intuitive as my eye is usually focused on the center of the frame not on the edges.

2. In Electronic shutter mode, I want to be able to hear a shutter sound for every frame I capture. With the option to turn this feature on or off in the menu and the option to raise the volume higher or lower.
Totally agree with both of those. The sound for e-shutter could be a slight ticking and when using headphones no one else could hear it.
