Favourite walkaround prime on Sony apsc?

I haven't owned my Sony system long enough to say for sure, but right now my answer would be similar to your choice... I would go with the Viltrox 23mm. The field of view provided by low-20s focal lengths matches the way I tend to see things (usually), and I really appreciate having f/1.4 for indoors. Plus, I just like the look of how that lens renders.
Yes, this is one of few possible replacements, but I'm not convinced because of much worse minimum focus distance (30cm VS 16cm) and slightly worse reported CA and autofocus. Hovewer f1.4 is tempting, so I will probably try Viltrox in the future when see some good deal on used market.
From the reviews I've read... Autofocus appears to be snappy for the 23mm. Agree the CA and focus distance are not desirable attributes, but for the price of 'admission' it seems to be a fair trade-off.

I haven't found autofocus speed an issue at all. And I haven't really shot it much in situations where CA would normally show up, so I can't say a lot about that. Maybe I'll have to try to do that just to see how it does.

I do agree that the MFD is a bit limiting at times. I notice this especially when playing with my two-year-old, who likes me to take pictures of his toys... the type of photos I think are much more interesting as close-ups. It's not a big enough issue for me to go with a different lens, but if it were I would probably consider the Tamron 20mm. Of course, that may be a little too wide to be considered a walk-around lens.

What about your favourite prime lens? I mean no specialised one, but the lens which would you bring with you as the only one if you have to. And why this lens?

Thanks for your responces!
The newest Sony one: the 20mm F2.8 -- small, light, fast focusing.
The newest? So do you mean fullframe f1.8 G?

Hi everybody,

I just thinking about my walkaround prime and what could be possible replacement. I started on Sony apsc with old Sigma 30f2.8, then switched to Sony 28f2 for faster aperture and finaly got to Sony Zeiss 24f1.8 for wider view, slightly faster aperture and better magnification. I use it for family and travel photography, close-up shots and some occasional landcapes. So far I see no better lens for me in current E-mount lens selection.

As with most, the Sigma 30 is my go to. The Sony 24 would be nice as the 23-25 range is one of my favorite walk around focal length, but the price tag put me off.
I wouldn't accept price of the new lens either. But I found deal for half the price in like new condition, so I didn't hesitate :-)

Not at all. 20mm on apsc is kind of nice FL for walkaround shots. I used tiny Sony 20f2.8, when I wanted to bring only compact gear with me.

Tamron is nice, but the size given it's only f2.8 and autofocus performance would probably make me hesitate to buy.

I forgot to ask about Viltrox features and usability. Everything works as native Sony lens? Eg. magnification when MF, IBIS etc? What about support of the lens in RAW software, mainly automatic vigneting/distorsion correction? Do updates of the lens through USB cabel works corectly? What is your experience?

Thanks!

Had the Sony Zeiss 24 for a short time a few years ago, and glad the Viltrox 23 came along because with the modern glass it seems like having a definitely better lens now. Second to Sigma 56, it seems to me.

The A6400 doesn't have IBIS, so I can't say for sure about that. But magnification and eye-AF work with the Viltrox.

Lightroom doesn't have a lens profile for it, unless there's one that can be added manually (vs. the ones that automatically populate in the drop-down menu from the Lightroom updates). There may be a third-party profile that can be added manually - I don't know.

EDIT: I found this lens profile on the Viltrox website. But it says "If you need to import it into Lightroom for lens corrections, the image format must be JPG." That seems backwards from what I would expect - it seems like it should prefer a raw file. I'm not on my editing laptop right now, but I'll give this a try this evening.

I haven't noticed distortion being and issue, but there is noticeable vignetting wide open. I like that look for portraits, but for landscapes an automatic correction would save a little time vs. using the sliders.
Do updates of the lens through USB cabel works corectly? What is your experience?
I don't know about that. I haven't tried to update it. I'm still getting used to the fact that lenses come with updateable firmware, so it's not always something I think about. Maybe this evening I can try it out and see.

I am very curious about these 3 Viltrox, 23/33/56 are they all available now on Sony e, they are for Fuji x. But anyway you hear mixed views about them, but I am tempted to try one for myself. In fact I placed an order for the Fuji one and then cancelled because I wanted to try the Tamron 17-70 first! But interested in more comments on them.

Also, if anyone is interested you can see it in action here but on the X-S10 that I currently use and why I was interested in trying it too.

and the 33

and the 56

There are others on the site too, all should deliver pretty similar results on Sony aps-c, in fact the Sony sensors might do better than Fuji with it.

For walk-around... I almost always have my Sony E 20mm f2.8 on my a6000. I have no complaints about that lens whatsoever and another plus is it is truly compact making walking around even easier.

lovely shots, seems a good lens!

I wish it came also in a mini (slower, 100gr.) version f/2.8, somehow similar with Fuji's old/new WR 27mm.

I also enjoy the 22-28mm FOV, but i don't want to lug around any 1.4 primes on an APS-C. We can get the a7r with FE primes for that 'ultimate' shallow DOF, low light view :-)

Yeah, as much as I love the Sony system overall, I do miss the Pentax 21mm Ltd pancake. What a gem of a lens that is! I recently found a good deal on the Sony 20mm pancake. It's not bad, but it's nowhere near the optical quality of the Sigma trio or the Viltrox 23.

Hi

My fave by a loooonnngggg way is the Zeiss Touit 32mm for Sony APSC.

Sharp, nice bokeh fast and light.

Oliver

I'm using the A6000 which I love due to its light weight, small size, grip and simplicity. And it's so inexpensive these days if I break or lose it, not such a big deal to replace. So my favorite walk-around primes to go with it are along the same themes: Sigma 30/2.8 and Samyang 35/2.8. The Sigma becomes a 45mm equivalent FOV which is by far my favorite one prime FL for the whole day. The Samy is so small and light, that I have to double check my camera bag to make sure it's not empty. Both have good IQ, the Sigma having better rendering to my personal taste.

That's my next lens. I love the colors in samples I've seen. Very Zeiss.

The Touit 1.8/32mm is my favourite too

I really like the Sigma 30mm 1.4, as many others have also said. I also enjoy using the Meike 25mm 1.8 - it's lots of fun to use, and it's so small and light that I barely notice I'm carrying a camera.

My Sony 20mm/f2.8 measures pretty well, near the top of my lenses. Did I get lucky, or do I not have any good lenses? ;-) It’s compactness gives me the high-quality yet compact camera I always wanted. On my old Nex-5, it’s really compact - too bad Sony hasn’t updated newer sensors and such into this small size again.

I’d like to try the Viltrox 23mm. Reviews seem mixed, but it looks on paper like just the thing I’d like - cheap, ~35mm equiv., f1.4....

The lens works very well, just like an OEM Sony lens. The lens does not have OSS, however I have the a6500 so the IBIS is useful. There is no lens profile in Lightroom as previously mentioned, however I was able to create a preset that makes the corrections that I would like to see and I apply it to my images, it is pretty useful. I have not noticed considerable vigneting.

Regarding the updates, I immediately updated my lens upon purchase which fixed the AF issues previously mentioned. The AF is not as fast as some of my lenses, like the 85mm f/1.8 but it is relatively fast.

I have taken many pictures with the lens and I do like it, a lot. I took it as my only lens on a trip a few months ago and I was just fine.

With all of that being said, my favorite PRIME lens to just leave on my camera is the 35mm f/1.8. I love this lens, the bokeh is beautiful, it is a tad long but the AF is so fast that it almost turns my camera into a point and shoot.

Funny, I was going to say my old Sigma 30 f2.8.

It's fast enough, small enough, and very sharp. It's also a good focal length.
I only have the old Sigma 30 f2.8 prime, and it takes great pictures every time I use it.

Although I only use three lenses, I use the FE 70-300 92%, the 18-135 6%, and the Sigma 30 the other 2%. Those three lenses are all I need at this time, and I'm happy with all of them. I guess you can call me a minimalism, I can take it. ;-)

Here are only three folders taken I saved with the Sigma 30 f2.8 I'd like to share.

A motorcyle show, and a Chinese festival and a Renaissance Festival , to show why I like it so much. I can't see how the Sigma 30 f1.4 or any other 30mm len could do much better. Oh yeah, it also only cost me $139 bucks!
