It's official . . . I'm published

That the year and a half on the newspaper gave you a big head and you need a atitude adjustment. Dam thats rude! People like different styles not just your style. The picture DavidP shot has merit for what he likes and captures and that is all that matters.
The benefit of a class is seeing how a group of people approach the
same subject. You can benefit from that. I have never taken a
class, myslef. But I start a 2 year Commercial Photography program
this fall, covering the business aspect, large-format glamour, fine
art, digital photojournalism (working with a local Seattle paper,
I.E. the interning at the Seattle Times, etc.). All very valuable
stuff. Personally, I always want to improve. Learn new things. I'm
sure the year and a half I spent working for the local newspaper in
highschool taught me a lot more than a book would.
Examples?

Take a class? That's for those who want to follow some fuddy
duddy instructor's "rules".

I'm quite capable of reading about those rules on my own, and them
ignoring them. At my own peril or not. LOL.
At first I thought it was just one of those situations where you
didn't get quite what you wanted, and for some reason had to
settle. But then I looked at your webpage. wow! You are just plain
terrible! I'm sure if it wasn't for auto-exposure, and auto-focus,
you'd just have solid black, or solid white images (with the
occasional indistinguishable blob).

Oh well. Look, when you're shooting, follow the motion of the
action. If it flows out to the tip of an outstretched hand, capture
it! Don't cut it in half! You can crop later, but you can't add
what was not shot (in most situations anyway, digital aside..).

Take a class or something.

David , nice to talk with you...I am a fan of your pics. Here goes the sad, honest truth. That picture is of my life long friend with who I grew up with. He is an accomplished muscian in Nashville, Tn.

I did the shoot for free and got my name spread and published. His music is a niche form ...so it's not a huge audience but never-the-less I got to say "Hey Mom--look I didit !"

We went through about 50 pics and decided on that one. We wanted the focus to be on the "playing". We cropped it down in photoshop if I remember correctly. It's amazing the responses I get with that shot...you cut his head off !!! lol . It seems to be 50/50, people either like it or hate it.

I feel like I have come some way in my photography learning.. I know how to meter now..well maybe a little. That shot was probably over a year ago. Your thread just reignited the excitement for me. I am no shooting Full Contact Fighting and look to have a couple shots soon to be published in Grappling magazine. You can view some of my keepers at > http://www.mmaphotos.com

The bottom line is I have not made any money of my artistic creations -- yet. I have made photgraphy money shooting some products now.

Thanks,
Russ
A question: were you being paid to do an album cover shot when you
did that? Or did this come about sorta the same way mine did?

And why the tight crop? Was that done after the fact, or was it
shot that way? Don't get me wrong, I love it!
In my excitement for David I also wanted to share my
accomplishment, didn't mean to hijack a thread.

Thanks for the nice comments though.

Does he happen to play a BUNCH of different string instruments? Banjo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, dulcimer, etc.?

Was this his first CD? Did he used to sell cassette tapes?

I think I ran into him at the OpryLand Mall (aka ShopryLand - lol) a few years back. He was playing by himself in one of the stores, actually. Had a neat collection of instruments, and played several of them.

I talked with him a while, and bought one of his tapes. (I'll have to go figure out where I stuffed it).

Since you cut his face off (big grin), I don't know if it's the same guy or not. Truth be known, I probably still wouldn't be certain.

I'm definitely in the "love it" camp. Sometimes cutting off a head is a good thing. I try mainly to cut off OTHER parts of the image, not the head. But you may have inspired me to try something new. (I can hear the moans from the peanut gallery already -- rofl).

Do you still live near Nashville? (I'd look up your profile, but that's a bit difficult now -- yeah, I know, open a new browser window). If so, we need to hook up sometime.

David,

You may have very well run into him. To a full faced pic please go to http://www.stephenseifert.com . I actually live in Nky (Northern KY near Cincy). I'll let you know when I am going down there though , it would be fun to hook up for sure.

He does play a variety of instruments...I am not sure If he has ever sold cassette though. He has also played for the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and was featured on one of their cd's.

And that is his latest cd I believe, he is actually looking to get out of music all together now.

Thanks
Russ

Nope, the guy I was thinking of is definitely older. They probably know each other, though.

He wants to get out of music? Wow. Do something. Stop him!

I should be in town the week of Fan Fair. Will probably arrive sometime the Sunday before.

Wow....congratulations on being published when you were 16. I was published when I was 13. And I continue to be published after many years.

That's no need to be a complete ass hole to people. Woop Dee Dooo.... you're all that because you were published when you were younger. Does that make you any better? No. But your comments sure as hell make you less of a person. Get a life. Stop bragging. No one cares.
As far as being published, that's dubious at best. I got my first
photo published when I was 16. I got the front page, in fact. After
the lead photographer saw that roll, I was immediately hired as a
freelancer. Pretty cool to shoot for your local paper when your in
high school!....not to mention get paid!

I'm sure you'll improve (lighting, focus...look at that mike! it's
more in focus then your subject!, and compositon could have been
much better...that mike is placed pretty poorly..I.E. YOU NEED TO
MOVE DUMB ASS!.).

Friendly comments from a sleep deprived boy.
Well, the songwriter says the check's in the mail for the image to
use on his CD cover, anyway.

Here it is (low rez)

it's 5"x5", and the red lines indicate where it will be cut down to
4.75" x 4.75" (pretty sure that's the standard cover size).

Woohoo. Boy, I can quit the day job and retire now. NOT! lol

I disagree. he explained the condition's he was under. And he has some really good shots in his portfolio.

Regardless, I'm not gonna listen to someone who has a TIFFEN filter on a L lens! Are you mentally impared? (I am, but not that dumb).

Congrats on a crappy photo! I hope he didn't pay more than $20 for it!

You must feel really good. That is a nice image and the money helps validate your photographic skills. :)

In a recent issue of Photography Monthly, photographer Gered Mankowitz was quizzed about CD/Album covers:

Q: Do photographers take pride in CD covers?

GM: "The album cover was the perfect outlet for a photograph. We valued our covers so much. It was such a special thing. It's different now, as marketing types direct photographers. I never made any money from my covers by the way, and I've shot everyone from the Rolling Stones to Oasis. I don't know many people that were earning money solely out of photographing bands."

Sure took you long enough... must have been that 1/3-2/3 rule of thumb discussion that did it ;-) Well David, I'm happy for you, keep up the good work. BTW - could have been published quicker if you used a 10D though - hehehehe :-)
