Thanks Rick, I thought the summary was really good and the pictures a great showing of what we can expect from the new camera.

Now, to see how much the asking price is when they release it and how long I can hold out before an upgrade... I really like the combined battery aspect.

Ah, phooey. Photoshop lost the MakerNote info so we can't see your
SPP settings.

I think I covered that in my report but most of you probably have spent your time looking at images. I did one night shot and it looked excellent but was not a good example. I expected to do more but didn't and didn't keep the images. So I can't answer that but maybe the next person can.

R
rick,

The higher ISO's are excellent. Looks like they've hit the nail on
the head. Did you take any night shots? If so, have they improved
or eliminated the "discs" around lights that occur when the shot is
overexposed?

Also, are you aware of the anticipated production date?

Hi Sigma-forum!

I'm very intrested in the new SD10. Currently own a D30.

What are the gray stuff in this picture?

http://www.pbase.com/image/22625659

Clipping?

-nope.
Thanks for the early look, Rick. Long exposures very promising
:-). Looks like I need a "back up" body :-).
Now there's a great justification for buying the new camera.
Nothing worse than going on a long trip without a backup body!!

Hi Rick,

Does SD10 still have a dust productor?

Thanks.

The dust protector is the same and is of somewhat limited value. After changing lenses frequently for two weeks, it is loaded with dust. IMHO, if there are no technology issues, Sigma should do an"o-ring" type seal on the next one, such as is used in housings for taking cameras underwater where you can't afford a leak. I don't know iwhether something air-tight might be a problem.

I am not quite sure what you mean. This was a hand-held shot and that is the out of focus background.

Hello - I believe that is simply decay around the edges of the flower (or perhaps a natural coloring).

Clipping, if it does occur, yields pretty much a totally white clolor (I have a shot of aspen in direct sun that goes yellow to almost pure white on some of the leaves), not gray. And I do not believe it is possible for Rick to incorrectly expose a picture anyway, or at least there is no evidence of this... :-)

If you are curious about any settings, let me know. Most were auto
with some sharpening but a percentabe were custom.
I was mildly curious about some of the ISO 800 shots:
  • IMG07570.jpg with the oily river and dull greens. Was the shadow exposure boosted?
  • IMG07806 vs IMG08449: very different amounts of sky noise.
But mainly wanted to see the new feature in action.

Thanks for the report and pictures. It's pretty clear that Sigma/Foveon have done a lot of homework this time round. A lot of the aliasing is gone, ISO 400 is very usable and the colours are a lot better, although there still seems to be that weird blue shadow cast present.

For a pre-production camera this is looking very good, I gotta say.

8449 7806 7570
Disney Ride Teardrop Arch Colorado River

Exp -0.3 +0.7 +0.7
Contrast -0.3 +0.5 +0.5
Shadow -0.3 +0.5 +0.0
Highlight -0.3 +0.8 +0.7
Saturation -0.1 -0.1 +0.1
Sharpness 1.0 +1.0 +1.0
Fill Light 0.0 0.0 +0.0

Given the exposure boost of seven tenths, it may be that the effective ISO is higher than 800 and therefore noisier? 8449 is one of my favorite 800 shots

7691, 93 and 94, all 800, look good and they are either right on or brought down a few tenths in exposure just like 8449. I have another series, not posted, I believe, of the river (same composition). One is right on in exposure and the other needed +1.2 exposure adjustment. The water in the 1.2 is a lot noiser than the other. My three slot canyon shots which are all brought down a tenth or two look very good (all ISO800 - hi, med and low res), and hold the highlights better than the corresponding 100 shots which are not posted. Maybe the camera should be shot at +1.0 or +.5 exposure on ISO 800 for better results.

Rick, did you get a chance to try out PhotoPro 2.0 with any SD9 images? In particular, I was wondering whether high ISO/low-light SD9 images look better in SPP 2.0, whether SPP 2.0 changes color balance on SD9 images, and whether the fill-light feature works with SD9 images.

All the best.

I don't know. My guess is 2.0 and fill light should work. I have no idea about the other two.
