GFX100S will have no available grip option

I had really hoped it would have the functionality and form factor of the GFX 50s. Having an option to basically get a GFX 100 with a removable grip but still retain the detachable EVF would be really useful for a lot of work, hoping the mark II someday would have that functionality.
Fuji has invested heavily into GFX100, I wont be surprised that they keep that as their flagship at the higher price point for those that want the extras. I really dont think Fuji would cut their nose to spite their face and kill off the GFX100 that would .

Why am I saying this. If you follow all the trends they start discounting the older model when a new one is going to be introduced. I wont even be surprised that there may be a smaller 50R

The 100S is attractive as a second body for those new to GFX or those wanting to upgrade to the larger sensor.

As a GFX100 owner I am pleased that Fuji is protecting our investment. The new GFX100s holds no interest for me. Very happy with the GFX100.
As a GFX 50S owner, I'm not so pleased that the 100S doesn't provide a clear upgrade choice. Looks as though I'll lose several things that I like about the 50S.
As a GFX 50R owner I'm curious to see how many of us will upgrade as well. I know I won't until they offer a camera in this price range that in addition to the more resolution and IBIS also has the EVF options (same that is available on the 50S and GFX100). As a matter of fact I probably would have picked the 50S over the 50R because of that EVF if 50S did not have that hump - did not like how 50S felt in my hands because of it and also find it very ugly).

I was also very much hoping for essentially a GFX 50s Mark II. Perhaps Fujifilm will still release it at some point?

Hi,

I recall running the old Kodak 460 from an external battery worn on the shoulder by a strap because they didn't have swappable battery packs (and the internal pack didn't run long between charges).

That was an upgrade from the shoulder worn Digital Storage Unit of the original Kodaks.
With a SCSI cable, right?

Jim

Are you guys going to make me get this new GFX 100s (or whatever they call it)? I hope not because I want that tilt EVF and big vertical grip.

I'm following Jim and converting the 50r, so I guess the 100s could be a nice walk-around shooter because it will be pretty small (relatively).

Patrick over at FR is saying 'According to information we have received, the Fujifilm GFX100S will have no vertical battery grip option.'

If true, this puts this model firmly in the 'prosumer' category, and not a prime choice for pro portrait shooting work.

This, PSAM, and the lack of Tilt EVF really indicate this is a very scaled back 'entry' model, designed to protect the GFX100 market position (and pricing)
This really feels like a replacement for both 50S and 50R – or something else entirely. I don't think it makes sense for them to call it "S" since it's not a direct replacement for the 50S. Plenty of alphabet letters available.

Originally S was said to indicate 'System camera or Studio camera', but it's now looking more like 'SLR Style', with R indicating 'Rangefinder Style'

I get why Fujifilm want to do it - it's a 'full frame killer'.

But it looks less and less like a system camera upgrade from the GFX50S.

I think Fujifilm already have made the upgrade path clear. 50S owners can upgrade to GFX 100, get the modular EVF, battery grip etc. and the 50R owners can upgrade to GFX 100S with the same fixed EVF and no grip option. 50S was flagship and 50R was the entry camera, and now the same with GFX 100 and 100S.

Now that they have the IBIS unit smaller, maybe they can introduce another model with the old 50MP sensor and price it accordingly?

Ohh man, now I remember all those 80 pin cables and numerous connectors in one cable, also the IDE cables with master and slave connectors hahaha. Those days are long gone, I had a Quantum Fireball drive I think.

If the GFX 100 were smaller I'd be willing to go that route. But I'd like a small GFX with a tilting EVF and 100 MP. Seems it can't be done. I'm thinking the 50S design was an aberration.

The GFX50s with the battery grip attached isn't really any smaller than the GFX100. And the GFX100's integral grip is more functional and holds 2 batteries, as opposed GFX50s' one, although some have complained about the grip in the vertical position.

QUOTE: "...Seems it can't be done..." FUJI has already proven that it can be done, but some marketing wonk has probably pushed them in a different direction.

I agree. As a "marketing wonk" it seems to me that with this new model Fuji are pursuing the crowd that want to move up to MF (or just want more pixels) – as others have suggested. Presumably the new 100S will compete nicely against other high megapixel offerings. But that's a different market than those that are already in MF and want tools that suit their more 'considered' style of working. Maybe that sounds too snobbish. But hopefully you know what I mean. The GFX50S was very much a 'crossover' product between FF and more traditional MF. Looks like the 100S is more overtly FF styled.

I own the GFX100 and previously the GFX50S and 50R. Although I often shoot portraits which is great with the GFX100 I also do a lot of street/travel/documentary so for that I'd welcome a smaller body, closer to the GFX50R. I had been contemplating buying a Leica Q2 but for a little more I'm thinking now that I may well get the GFX100S for a more walk-around camera and second body.

You don't understand investing.

Investing 101:

I paid 10 grand for my camera body 15 months ago. I could sell it for maybe 8 grand today and probably 5 grand in 2 more years - or maybe only 4 grand by then

That is a 50-60 % loss over 3 years.

I prefer at least 30 percent gains over 3 years.

That way I can afford bad "investments" like cameras.

Other sound "investments" are cars and boats. 😎

A full investment analysis would include the cash flow from use of the camera, depreciated to net present value. An even fuller analysis would include "psychic income".

GF 250mm with TC 1.4X converter is amazing lens to cover that 200-250mm FF range (more or less). Sadly there is not much available to cover 400mm (at least Fuji does not have anything).
