I know photographers have never had it as good in terms of high quality robust gear, but since it’s illegal to go outside almost, i thought I’d make a topic!

My dream system would be:

Fujifilm body (not the new PASM one though) - manual dials everywhere, love the menus, really love the XT3.

Bayer sensor - sick to death of messing about with LR Add ons and duplicate DNGs, and i don’t enjoy C1. I’d love a Fuji camera i could seamlessly integrate in to Lightroom (i have years of galleries already there and enjoy the software)

Lenses - Full support from Sigma and Tamron :). Lenses are a gap i have now. I want XF mount Tamron/Sigma 100-400s and 150-600s, and some nice 105mm or so macro lenses.

AF - Sony autofocus, or Canons new one!

Colours - I really like the film simulations, but something like adobe landscape would be nice built in!

That’s my dream combo! I guess it’s a bit of a merge between Fuji/Sony/Canon!

What’s yours? (Just for fun!)

I would love to have a digital monochrome camera... something like a Leica Monochrom, but, you know, affordable! A Canon EOS RP Monochrome, for example, would be ideal.

I shoot with Pentax DSLRs, so if I was really going dream I'd want monochrome camera in K-mount -- a Digital Monochrome Spotmatic! -- but a mirrorless monochrome is much more likely, and I could my current lenses with an adapter.

An Olympus PEN F with Olympus 14-150 and 9-18 lenses

or

an Olympus PEN F with Olympus 17 1.8 and 45 1.8 lenses.

Oh, I already have my ideal cameras :-)

Fuji Four Thirds. I would stick mostly with Fuji, my XS10 is as close to perfect as i have owned. But i would ad IBIS on par with Olympus and throw in handheld high rez. Throw in the customization and smart button mapping of the Panasonic G9. Perfect.

Fuji Four Thirds. The thing is, i expect Fuji to make this eventually. At one point almost nobody had IBIS, now they all do. Eventually they will all have HHHR and more button customization (on upper tier at least).

Fuji if they had a fast focus system and decent sport lens

Canon if they had dynamic range

Panasonic if they had dual pixel autofocus

Olympus if they had a good menu system

Sony if they had good ergonomics and color

Sigma if they had a Foveon FF

Nikon if they had a decent APSC lens lineup

I realize that being stuck in (Covid19) has turned peoples heads to wild thoughts.. Seriously though, I would like a Rolls Royce with the running costs of a Prius, the Off Road capacity of a Range Rover & throw in the Acceleration of a Lambo.. L

I would guess out of all of those, Fuji is the closest. The AF is quite fast actually, even using adapted EF lenses. It's possible the older bodies were much slower but i have owned the XT30 and now XS10. The latter especially is very fast.

IMO Canon has a very poor ML line selection, FF is too spendy and apsc is thin. Sony won't change their ergos or colors. Panasonic is hellbent on keeping DFD. Nikon is going all in on FF, kinda like Sony. Olympus is up in the air and nobody has heard of Sigma.

Out of them all, i think Fuji has the shortest distance to go to meet perfection.

I'd like an APSc version of what I have. No, I have no interest in an APSc camera that can use my FF lenses. I want crop lenses that are of the same quality as my L lenses with the same FOV, accepting the aperture penalty for the smaller sensor. I'd be happy for that camera to be the size of one of the larger M cameras with the same features as my R or even an R5/6, with the Canon 32 MP crop sensor.

Particularly, I want a 10mm tilt shift lens, a 60-250 zoom lens with the IS, AF speed, and sharpness of my 100-400, a 53 mm portrait lens with IS and great sharpness, color, and contrast, a 22mm lens with IS and great IQ, etc. I like the 0.5-1 macro focusing of my RF 35, and wish it was a feature of every lens, but it that is not practical, I can live with it on a few lenses, as I do now.

I would ditch the whole giant system and accept the 1.33 stop penalty in low light capability and shallow DOF without complaint. I just don't want to give up anything else.

Fuji is quite clearly sticking to just two formats that are distinctly different in size - APS-C and MF. It misses out FF because it is too close to both of those other formats to be worth the effort; so the likelihood of it going down by the same trivial proportion is effectively nil.

I want a modular system with shift:

Rear standards would come with different sensors. I'd choose one with an oversized square sensor such as 18x18mm for M43 lenses or 24x24mm for APS-C lenses. All lenses with a bigger image circle could work as shift lenses. Interchangeable screens and viewfinders would be available as well as wearable displays. Control modules with different layouts and grips would be available for different tastes.

Quite similar to op

My X-t2 but the raw files just work with my old ACR.

A 24-50mm equivalent f2.8 zoom so 16-33mm f2.8 would be perfect.

That's me sorted

  1. XT4 body but with A7RIV sensor
  2. X100v but with a7rIV sensor and IBIS

That kind of sensor would be very future proof. Basically covers normal viewing with natural details and contrast. Of course, one could go beyond that, but it would be either for some kind of science research or digital zooming. Still, an optical zooming would be superior, so why do digital zoom compromise with even higher MP? 16K is about 133 MP which means about 400 MP subpixels while Bayer sensor vomits only total 133 MP for all three primary colors and you have to guess the rest. Nasty color artifacts they can have.
