I bought the 100 - 400 a little less than a year ago from a company on eBay. I should have know it was a gray market product, but I didn't! On an outing the lens rolled out of my backpack. It wasn't from a stand up position, rather when I picked up the bag. The fall was not far but sufficient to mess up the VS system. I guess lTamron quality isn't the same as Canon quality. It now oscillates continually. I called Tamron and, when I gave them the serial number, they said it was a gray market lens and wanted nothing to do with it. Told me to contact the seller. The seller said they have a 30 return policy and suggested calling Best Buy. Of course Best Buy wants nothing to do with it too. OK, I accept that it is a gray market lens and their retail price has built in dollars for warranty and support. However, they made the lens, probably on the exact assembly line as the full retail lens, therefore they should at least agree to repair the lens for whatever is a fair repair cost. I guess I have to trash this $600 lens. This was my first Tamron lens and it will be my last.

Tamron is completely out front with their policy. The op apparently did no research before buying the lens. I bought my Tamron 100-400 from a local, Tamron authorized dealer. I would not have considered getting one gray market. I value Tamron's warranty and customer service. I got my Tamron 28-300 and Tamron 70-300 repaired over five years into the six year warranty period. Nothing was broken. Just got them cleaned and adjusted. I got my 28-300 adjusted again ten years after purchase. I had to find proof of purchase as they no longer had a record of the serial number. Too old, I guess. I had the record of the previous repair so they did accept the lens and adjust it. For $. So, they are transparent with their policy and rigorous in their application of it. On the other hand, their six year warranty is the best in the business and they repair and return the lens quickly.

To conclude: In my experience Tamron's repair support is nothing less than superb. I was interested in reading what went wrong for the op. Then, got angry when it quickly became evident that the fault was entirely his, and he was falsely blaming Tamron.

The lesson: Do the necessary research before buying camera gear. And, take just a little responsibility when you break something.

The thing is that it’s the manufacturer who is selling their products into the grey market channel..
Manufacturers sell to either distributors (who sell only to resellers) or direct to authorized resellers. The problem comes up when a reseller is willing to sell at a very low margin. They can’t do it in the country they are authorized because of MAP. If they violate MAP the manufacturer can refuse to sell them product. So what they do is to sell it under a different company name on places like eBay or Amazon. They undercut everyone else and get the coveted Buy Box.

Manufacturers cut off gray market sellers all the time. The problem is finding the actual company (not the dba) this is doing the selling.

There may be other scenarios but this is the one I frequently deal with.

Because you wanted to save a few bucks you blame Tamron? Not tamrons fault, they make a fine product. Some better than canon or nikon. Look i understand what you are saying and your disappointment. But, Tamron is not liable.

I do have some sympathy with the OP ......... maybe it's because of EU laws dictate that although the guarantee does not have to be honoured, there has to be a right to repair from the manufacturer payed from the buyers pocket .....

...... luckily EU laws see things differently than do the US ..... happily !! :)

It seems many here are happy that Tamron refuses to repair grey market in the US ......

........ probably to justify to themselves the extra money they payed for their Tamron lenses !!
