(Yes I do take and have photos and they're grainy) http://bluei.ca

great compositions, nice images, but the sunstars are really disappointing. a voigtlander wouldve improved those images 1000%

Or the Tamron 28-75 you seem to have. Not the best but much better sunstars on that lens.

Yes, they are pretty darn good. The whole world does not revolve around sunstars.....

You like those produced by the Oly lenses? Or those of the Tamron?: you can see them here https://www.dpreview.com/galleries/9455615626/download/4021742

I think for night cityscapes/architecture sunstars can really add alot of aesthetic.

Amount of rays might be a matter of taste, but not if they are frayed or not defined.

I've got the 17-28 Tamron. Debating the 28-75 but just don't like the Sony body handling and don't trust the Sony or Tamron with weather sealing and cleaning sensors sucks lol.

Since when does handling or weather sealing affect sunstars?

I like the Christmas Tug from Lonsdale Quay with Vancouver in the background. So many construction cranes going.

The Vancouver area is getting hammered with rain, lately. First five days of January have given us HALF of the normal total for the month — so a sealed lens makes sense.

Since the equipment is not enjoyable for every day photography and handling and only used for when I really need something for high iso/fast shutter like no flash nightclub photography.. Also the sunstars probably look like they do because of the editing in DT either way wasn't shooting for them but for the over all scene.

I very much enjoy recreational night photography, the light is unique and the opportunities for striking subject matter seem limitless, and it is one good way to make some lemonade, at a time like this!

If you feel like it, you might be pleased with some expeiments with adapted glass (to f/0.9 for just $150, used mf lens and .71X adapter) or the new fast lenses from 7artisans, Mitakon and others.

I find I can handhold at ISO 64 even in low light with glass that is T1 or faster, which has become quite easy and inexpensive in this format.

Was a relevation for me, YMMV, cheers!

Your colors are beautiful.

How do you do your white balance at night?

Sometimes for the most part in Darktable "camera" white balance seems to work. Problem is with different color led sings/fixtures and they seems to be hard to get the right color with white balance. My A7s is really bad with LED's.

I worked at those shipyards back in the 70's , nice to see they kept a bit of them.

Enjoyed these. I must get out at night more.

I live just outside a well lit coastal town with a pier, boats and neons ...

But just do the day and sea scenes.

Lots to inspire from your pictures - thanks for posting.

Well one good thing about the Vancouver area not many night shots of the place vs other cities around the world and most are of the same places so lots to shot that no one has shot before to be creative.

Did you by any chance work in the "Erection Shop"?

That was a familiar sign at the shipyards, as you came down St. George's Ave. I believe!

Took this one in 2006 I think?

no, I was on the dock or dry dock most of my time there, stretching ferries, wiring new construction eg research vessels and fish boats along with a floating bunkhouse for innuvic plus doing maintenance on freighters. it was miserable in winter unless I was in a nice warm engine room.
