No Z8 and Z9 in 2021?

What does Thom Hogan heard out of Tokyo - which we didn’t know?

According to his article from Jan, 2 2021 he expects that only one Z FX

body will be announced in 2021. That will be a new pro body - not exactly

what we thought - Z8+ (currently in development - expected in preproduction

by July).

The (in 2020 tested) 60mp+ Z8 (to match Sony A7R Mark IV) and the 24mp Z9

(to match Sony A9 Mark II) are only on Thom’s wish list and he would be

surprised, if any of these specific things showed up in 2021.

Thom believes that Nikon is totally centred on their 20mp, 24mp, and 45mp

sensors and updating them, as that's quicker and easier for them to do.

Completely new sensors won't be seen until 2022 at the earliest.

If I read between the lines that means Nikon’s technology is not yet ready

to compete with their DSLRs. Thom’s mentioned ‘Z8+’ are probably pro

bodied/buttoned 24mp/45mp updated (profit maximising) Z6/Z7.

Good! Having new stuff now doesn't help. I have not been out of the house long enough to use my kit as is. Maybe this year will give consumers a chance to catch up on "needs" and "wants". This also will give manufacturers an chance to catch up on distribution of current products, improve what they currently have, and really come out with solid issue free stuff in the future. DP may not have a lot of new stuff to report on, but they will have a chance to re-review what we have and issues that have cropped up.

Maybe they don't feel there is enough market for a high performance sports like mirrorless yet? Maybe they feel like they need 1 or 2 native long pro-ish lenses (zoom or prime) like a 300mm, 400mm or 600mm first? Maybe they want that instead of those lenses mounted to an FTZ before the body?

Might not be smart to some people, but might be smart to others.... a lot of people trashed them and others for a camera system with too few lenses, and now they want more and more bodies when the native lenses are still on the roadmap....

They have to pick who to cater to, or subsets of several to cater to. A delicate balance when a lot on here want the pancakes... No one using a pancake z8 or z9...

Nothing
What did you read?
I read that people have seen the Loch Ness monster. Doesn't mean what I read has any basis in fact.

Just adding the "grain of salt" aspect here, because I think many rely too heavily on what they read; and further, many put too much trust into self-proclaimed sources that supposedly have insider-access, despite a significant lack of historical accuracy.

I won't retype what I've previously typed on this topic:

I read that there will be a Z8 with 45Mp and I would be more than happy with a Z8 with 45Mp but with the AF tracking ability of the D850. Having said that, I am more than happy with my Z7II with it's AF ability now, just that I don't use it for fast moving BIF unless they are medium to large birds.

Interesting if they release a "Z8" or D850 replacement first, Shane

Pretty much the same as you, but with one caveat: I am not sure about your "not yet ready to compete with the DSLRs".

What I read is that Thom's view is we will not get either of
  • 60mp+ Z8 (to match or best Sony A7R Mark IV)
  • 24mp Z9 (to match or best Sony A9 Mark II)
But instead a single Z8+ which will be a "Pro" camera: "yes, there's a Z8+ in development. It's not exactly what you think it is, but it is most certainly pro in nature"

Thom's also said Nikon will be updating existing Sensors, not launching new ones in 2021. So my guess is that the Z8+ is a 45MP fast shooter, perhaps competing with the Canon R5, perhaps with high end video?

Anything photographic for the Olympics is likely to be announced at C.E.S - or if not the Japanese trade show in February.

C.E.S. opens on Monday.

What on earth is a Z8+? Why not just call it a Z8?

My guess is that Nikon is working on real high-performance mirrorless cameras (it has to), possibly using new techniques. The Z8 (D850 equivalent) will appear when that's ready. The Z9 (D6 equivalent) will appear when the Olympics market dictates. The Z70 (D500 equivalent) also depends on high performance.

My guess is also that work is well advanced. But it's all guesses.

Given that a 400mm/f2.8 S and 600mm/f4 S are on the Z lens roadmap by the end of 2022, which means there is also a chance that they lenses will be introduced in 2021 (but 2022 is more likely), it implies that Nikon will have matching body/bodies for those lenses.

Given that the Canon R5 is quite successful, even introducing something that can match the R5's performance in 2021 is already putting Nikon behind. Nikon would be really behind if they are waiting until 2022.

I would imagine that Nikon will have at least one "pro" Z body in 2021.
