Hello. I am new and yesterday I bought nikon d90 second hand. With 18-105 lens on it. When i try focusing from visor, it focuses noiseless and fast. But then i push Lv button, after that lcd activated and then lens don't focus speedy and lots of bad sounds comes from lens trying to focus but can not do easily. Maybe 5-6 seconds later can focus. If I shot down Lv it becomes normal. Speedy and sounds little. What can i do. Thanks for you help..

Well you could return both Camera & Lens.. I had D90 for a few years, great camera and absolutely no issues.. It might be setting within the Menus, do a Reset and try again.. L

Have a look if the Exposure Delay mode is activated . Undo if it is.

otherwise do a web search for Nikon D90 noise on Live View.

(most will be about image noise in low light but there are reports similar to yours)

Phase focusing through the optical viewfinder is very fast, but may not be accurate.

Live View focusing from the back LCD screen is slow—particularly in low light—but it is very accurate when it locks focus.

Return it if you need fast and reliable Live View. The D90 was the first "prosumer" camera from Nikon with this feature and the secondary autofocus system it uses (contrast based) is terrible. I own a D7000 and NEVER use AF if using the screen. Even new Nikon DSLRs are not good at this.

If you need fast and reliable AF while using the LCD you should look at mirrorless cameras with phase detect AF like the Sony A6000.

Visor??? would that be Optical View Finder (OVF)?

How much did you pay for the camera / lens combo?
If you believe you paid too much, return both

otherwise,

Just stick with the OVF.

If you decide to keep the camera / lens, de-activate shutter button AF and assign one of the button at the back of the camera body as Auto-Focus. That will give you what is known as Back-Button AF.

One suggestion that has worked for some was to do a factory re-set.

To do that press the two Green buttons in at the same time for a few seconds.

(possibly getting rid of some 'wrong" settings made by the previous owner)

That was an early Nikon Live View implementation. It was terrible. Focus is slow and unreliable.

If you want to focus in live view, get a different camera. The D90 works just fine when you use the viewfinder.

Just stick with the OVF.
Absolutely. Despite its age, and if you can work within its limitations, the D90; I still, sometimes, use mine can produce excellent images.

Don't bother with live view.

Only a good idea if you can get along with it.

I'll admit to using BBF on my Z7 as a button is conveniently placed and not in my way but it was a more trouble than it was worth on every DSLR that I've owned.

"It's good to be . . . . . . . . . Me!"

That's normal. Even the newer generation (D5500) is relatively bad at LiveView Focus. It can be useful in certain situations, but in my opinion if you want any kind of reliable live view mirrorless is the way to go. D90 is still a good camera.
