This might sound crazy but the iPhone 12 Pro Max will replace my DSLR.

Yep. Took my ILC out yesterday and it’s just not as fun walking around with it as it is my iPhone 12 Pro. Here are a couple of shots. Can you tell which camera took which shots without looking at exit data?

I can see a pretty stark difference, especially in color and contrast. The iPhone picture lacks the punch of the Olympus.

That said, if it's about the hike more than the photography, the phone picture is plenty good. If you were trying to sell that patch of grass, it would be well worth it to break out the real camera. If you were going to blow that picture of the patch of grass up to 20X40, print it on half inch plexiglass, and sell it as fine art, it would be well worth it to break out the real camera. But just to document your hike for friends and family or preserve the memory? No. Use the phone.

I'm really looking forward to getting a 12 of one sort or another. I'm a real estate guy. I just might have someone to buy that patch of grass, if you're trying to sell it. The Max is a little big, but the longer range of focal lengths and the bigger sensor are very tempting. Also, if I want to play with the ProRAW, I'll want to process it on the phone, so the bigger screen is more tempting than it otherwise would be.

What's really exciting to me is the ultra wide lens. If that and the night mode are good, I won't have to break out the real camera to document what I see, when I'm looking at property. If I list the property, I'm breaking out the real camera, the tripod, the tilt/shift lens, the desktop computer, and the dedicated HDR software. That's way too much aggravation for simple documentary shots.

That's my opinion, and it's worth what you paid for it.

A ProRaw file is supposed to have less contrast and less saturated color than an sooc jpeg. It then gives major control in post for both dynamic range and vibrancy that doesn’t blow a certain channel. I have been just gobsmacked by this format. An 8 bit jpeg has a capacity to display almost 17 million colors and tones. The 12 bit ProRaw file has a capacity for almost 69 billion colors and tonal values of colors and grayscale. That is the magic contained within that is the data available in post. The world has changed exponentially from the raw files of my old 7+ to the ProRaw of the 12 Pro Max. There are still some limitations and extras I’d like to see changed for the better but that doesn’t matter compared to the leap in capabilities.

we are living in some good times.

Of course. You can add back as much as you want, though.

It's truly amazing.

The cool thing is that it's not an old style RAW file with the limitations of the sensor. It's a DNG with the collective information of many exposures. That gives it less noise and more dynamic range than a larger sensor.

Yes we are and more to come.

Anybody interested in photography would normally buy an SLR, then after years of usage and with the smartphone cameras getting better and better, the DSLR or mirrorless cameras gets relegated to "serious" photography. And then some would eventually decide that the smartphone camera is more than enough for the style of photography that they do.

I am one who also decided this year that my camera of choice would be my Huawei P30 Pro, rather than my DSLR. :)

I'm getting close. What I enjoy about my iPhone 11 Pro is how good the images are straight out of camera. I'm burning out on processing images from my DSLR's.

I don't know about the DSLR being only for "serious" photography. There are "un-serious" things, my iPhone cannot do, like what my DSLR with a 70-300mm lens can do. But still, I know what you mean. At this point I am more interested about what is coming with iPhone 13 or 14 than anything Nikon is doing. (Plus, I'm a retired old dawg, this is a hobby for me, and I gravitate toward the fun factor, and the mojo for me is currently coming from my iPhone).

The processing was so much more fun, when I started. It does get to be a drag, these days, especially for documentary or social pictures.

I do still enjoy those times when I get the tripod or stretch the focus and stabilizing abilities and push every last bit of IQ out of the computer. I just hate having to do that for basic stuff.

What do you think is coming? I still have the 8+. I thought about going with the 11 instead of the 12, but low light is important.

I am also wondering how good 5G is going to be in the next several years. I am not going to upgrade every year. I use my phone for a hotspot for my laptop, and a little more internet speed would be nice.

I went from 8+ to iPhone 11 Pro. The 8+ is still good, my wife still has hers. The 11 Pro has Night Mode and the wide angle camera, it's fun to use. I don't have any clue what's coming, the notion is that the tech in the smartphones is on the upswing, while not so much (in my opinion) with DSLR/ML.

I'm keeping my DSLR"s though, I still enjoy using them, I'm just enjoying the iPhone a bit more these days. i don't think this is an "either / or" scenario. Both work and do what they do.

Same with me Raticus, I am almost retired with scoliosis and my doctor has forbidden me from carrying heavy stuff.
I am loving my Huawei P30 Pro and Innovatronix CPFlash 550W off camera flash combination . I can now shoot a smartphone with studio lights. :)

Huawei P30 Pro with 2 CPFlash 550W . One is set at full power and used as a hairlight the other one as a main light in a softbox at 80% power. :)

Wonderful recap and I agree. FYI the size of the Max, which I resisted, soon fades from your thoughts... I did have to adjust to using two hangs for certain operations but overall very please with both the camera and the size of the phone

BlueCosmo5050 You are NOT crazy. I got my Pro Max on the launch day and so far I am super excited over what it can do. Amazed by the technology and not scared away of the 12 MP. I frequently use an a7s so I am used. Now I just carry a small lightweight tripod for great shots. Even added the 12 Pro Max to my Padcaster Mini rig. Sound from my Zoom H6 goes into the Pro Max via a Apogee Jam and with FilmicPro and the AirPods I have an unbeatable kit. The nightmode is awesome 30sec nightshots of stars and more is so easy to do now. There will not be another new traditional camera in my collection again. The Pro Max can do "impossible" things. Just hope that Apple pulls out of China and make them in the US and I would be happy.

that is a fantastic shot!

My thoughts for 2021 were to hang up the Nikons and go back to basics with the extraordinary iPhone 12 Pro/Max.

Ideally I'd like to see a lot more material on how to get the most from the iPhone 12 Pro/Max. Especially in Lightroom - I'm expecting great things there in the next few release updates (hint Adobe).

Best low light use - manual overrides etc .

Maybe some Astrophotography articles with the new devices

Got the Gimbal, Led, adaptor for the Rode etc - BUT ideally I'd like some focus on Stills, as most of the internet articles to date have been video related.

Share any awesome articles please :-)

I'm moving in this direction myself, soon to acquire 12 Pro Max. Anyone know specifically what apps to get for actually controlling shutter speed (vs just simulations)?
