Does 5D-IV + Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art reduce battery life?

Canon 5D Mark IV battery life is rated as 900. Mark III as 950.

Using my 5D III or my 5d IV with my Canon 24-105 f/4 L I never noticed any problem because never experienced a battery low message.

I usually take from 450 to 600 pictures in an event to later eliminate the ones I do not like too much and end up with 300 to 480 presentable photos. I never carried an extra battery with me. I know ...! I know ...!

When I bought the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art, like guided by the one upstairs who loves me I took, for the first time, an extra battery with me. Good! Because after taking about 260 photos I had the battery low message.

I thought I did not give enough charge to the battery, but the same happened on my next gig and on every gig after.

Is this combination (5D IV and Sigma 24-105 f/4) causing that? I have to point that I did exactly what I have been doing for the last five or six years on hundreds of gigs (weddings and 15añeras), using my 5D III and 5D IV with my Canon 24-105 f/4.

If it is the case I can live with that. I take things as they come, and take precautions if I cannot change them. But if it a correctable problem I would like to know how to fix it.

Yes, any time the camera is on, that lens' IS unit is active - the stabilizing group is held in place electromagnetically. So the lens will use battery power even if its IS is set to off.

This happens on the Nikon mount version too and it the major reason I replaced that lens with the Nikon 24-120. If I wanted mirrorless battery life on a DSLR, I'd... get a mirrorless camera.

Thanks for this thread. I did not know that, but can confirm I scratched my head recently after shooting for awhile with this combo and noting the battery charge drop. Really good to know.
