Hey, just trying to figure out what scanner to get. I have an offer for a Nikon Coolscan used for 500 EU. But have the newer MAC OS catalina etc, so not sure how that would work out compability wise?

Anyone tried:)?

/Cheers.

The Nikon will work fine, you will need to either purchase Vuescan or SilverFast however.

I read in a review that Mac OS later than 10.4 would have problem and would not work though, just don't want to buy something for that amount and not to work. I could always sell it again of course, they seem to always sell for around the same price, but still :)

Would you recommend the Nikon over the plustek by the way? or the opposite? Seen so many different opinions on that as well. Not sure what to get, its around the same price but the plustek is new as well and the benefit of suport etc if not functioning.

/Martin.

Thank you, which one would you recommend as the better overall scanner? Just curious, seen so many opinion on cons and pros for both .
I’ve never used a Nikon scanner so I wouldn't like to say. I’m very happy with my Plustek - an automated feeder would be nice as you have to push each frame through. The output is very nice though.

eheh ok thanks though. Yes i have heard it can be quite annoying but i don't use THAT much film, so might be fine anyhow. I guess when you develop i will order a contact map and then scan the ones that seems best right away to save some time :)

The issue that Nikon no longer makes Nikon Scan. But there is better software out there such as Vuescan.

The Coolscan is a superior scanner. The only advantage is that you can buy the Plustek new. But if you were going to buy a new scanner right now I would suggest the Pacific Image PrimeFilm XE over a Plustek 8200.

That’s probably a good plan - I scanned all my old negatives (a few thousand) over a period of a year or two with a Plustek - if you have everything on (multi scanning, dust removal) it takes long enough that you can multitask with something like ironing your clothes :-) iron a shirt - move to next photo - iron some trousers - move to next photo .....

Thats the same scanner as the reflecta ProScan 10T right? read some good things about that too, but so few reviews around for some reason. And asking around about it the only comment i got was from a guy in a Facebook analogue forum, he said he would not choose that over the plustek. But thats not a lot to go by lol.

haha thats good advice. yeh well there are always other things to do in meantime i suppose :) So no biggie really. Also the analogue photography i do is supposed to be more living in the moment and take time and be in no hurry, so it does make sense hehe :P

Which Coolscan? There are several, and I think some are SCSI interface rather than USB.

Yes, check into that thoroughly. Catalina broke compatibility with a number of things.
Its the number V. And yeh it really did, had several games and apps hat wouldn't work after. I DO have a laptop with a older OS though that would most likely work in worst case scenario, but have all my LR and other stuff on the other Imac.

Then I guess that's USB.

You probably won't be able to use Nikon's old software, but you should be able to use VueScan because that comes complete with its own up-to-date drivers. See the comments about Catalina (and even the new Apple hardware and OS) on this page:

Yes, that's the same very scanner. It puts out a few more pixels than my Nikon scanner and it's slightly sharper also. They are worth buying...

You can use Vuescan or SilverFast. The problem is that you will have to buy a license for it.

ok. Yeh it goes for 500 EU here. Its weird though its only oen or two places that has it over the net. Wonder why its so little advertised? The plustek is all over the place, but i guess its different marketing and maybe here in sweden the plustek is just harder pushed. Could you point me to any other reviews in video or otherwise of it?:)

Just would like to read more about it. Burt the one review i read is from that very good site and it gives it really good grades.

Ok yeh couldn't see any software bundled with it, so would ahem to get vuescan then i suppose.
