These are the images that grabbed me from among the many exhibits - some because they are very good photographs and others because they tell interesting stories.

****************************

AB S's cat was the first posting and really made me laugh. The dumb expression on the cat's face seems to be puzzlement at the idea of eating pigeons.

AB S's image of the statue of Doctor Tzemakh Shabad, and his image of the bust of the Vilna Gaon for that matter, are rather sad - Vilnius was very late in acknowledging the fate of it's Jewish community during WWII

Abiquiuense's stark tree against the starry heavens is great.

BIJ001's man hanging on a pole is a wonderful image.

Bill Borne's black and white of an image on an art deco building is just right.

And his view of the goblin rock field as amazing.

I was very moved by the little boy in an oversized helmet standing in defence of Warsaw during the fatal uprising, an image from a new poster here, DarkPassenger.

I really liked Dtop's veiled lady.

Guy Parson's view of the fat bird is a hoot.

As is Jerry045's sand sculpture

I picked this one of Jerry R's because the sculpture is wonderful.

Hacking away the turf to paint a great image in the white chalk underneath is a peculiarly English form of madness. They are supposed to be prehistoric but quite a lot of them are much later fakes. Mike 5100 posted this one.

Mina's grandson is an incredibly photogenic chap, but it looks as though he's going to be a heartbreaker as well. That little girl sculpture is bewitched by him.

a080933675d1499eb28a5fd929e9ee23.jpg

Ulop's street musician is a great image

98143971c9c841419b46b44330e9c701.jpg

But Val Buenos memorial sculpture is so moving.

efe1cfe2039a4a3eb7f083f7bab8fbb9.jpg

All the images above are in alphabetical order of poster's name but the next and final image is posted last because I simply love it. In fact I cannot get over it. I'd have given this the win if it had been an entry. The bronze lady on the bench deliberately has a space to her left where you can sit to take a portrait of yourself with her. Shikasta posted it.

A few honourable mentions first...

Ab S's lady is a very striking image - technically excellent as well as eye-catching.

ce69115300a34541aad42f479c7f73f4.jpg

Randy Bur's shot of the treasury at Petra is a pot-boiler, but who cares? It's a great image

ae426fabc14542caa879f96fa99a8569.jpg

RetoB's town mascot is another top notch photograph.

ca59b76a2e3d4c4aa25c99e6542e9d3e.jpg

Ulrich's [Ulop's] street sculpture from the far and frozen north is wonderfully ridiculous. I love it.

And finally: You can always trust Val Bueno to submit top notch photographs...

Now for the places. I didn't have my usually inability to choose with this challenge, so only one image in each place...

*****************************

Third place goes to Bill Borne for another of his wonderful images of the goblin rocks...

Second place falls to Jerry045 for his drunk...

First place and the dubious honour of running the next challenge goes to Mike5100 for his beautifully thought out and framed image of Harry Hotspur at Alnwick Castle...

So Mike, it's now down to you. A set of rules to copy and modify to suit will be in the next post.

Thanks Ed for your elucidating text caption to my picture of this statue in Vilnius. Indeed the recent history was shocking in Vilnius and it was really moving walking around there to day...

Having just run the mini-challenge with the title Outdoor Art, I was very taken with this image which appeared as a screen background in the Bing search engine today...

The artfully arranged stack of rocks is an example of messaging system used by the Inuit to tell their compatriots of good hunting places and other socially vital information.

It's the kind of thing that I'm sure will fascinate Abiquiuense.

Many thanks Ed for choosing one of my photos as the winner. I'm greatly honoured. I will take on the mantle of the next challenge, so give me until tomorrow to post a theme and some rules. What's the typical duration of a challenge by the way?

Did you know that a Russian author wrote children's stories with a loving caricature of the good doctor as the hero? They were based on Doctor Doolitle? Doctor Shabad must have been a remarkable man to generate such an accolade.
