Since I bought my Sony RX10M4 in April I've been trying out various post-processing software. Sony touts Capture One Express as being free, but now it seems that the best you can do is a free 30 day trial of the Pro version (and I'm certainly not ready to shell out those big bucks when there's GIMP and several others that seem to do a decent job).

Am I missing something on the Sony web site?

I have been using the free version for months now. But even though it is free you do have to register the software: you then get a free activation/license code to paste into the trial version and you can keep using it.

I had used the one I originally downloaded for several months after registering and getting an "activation" code, also. Today when I brought it up the pop-up box said that my activation had expired and the only version I can find to download is a trial version of the pro edition (although I've clicked on the "Express" version to start the process.

Do you have a link for the location of your download?

I have changed/updated my computer recently. I downloaded from here a few days ago with no problems. I simply googled free capture one express for sony. Cheers. https://www.captureone.com/en/products-plans/capture-one-express/sony

I've found the Capture One website difficult to work with on several occasions. In early 2019 I had a copy of Express loaded into a travel laptop which worked quite well for 6-7 months. After which it suddenly became corrupted and would not load.

The tech support was very limited and not very responsive. You may have to go into your account and clear activated copies of your Capture One Express license and start over. You can submit a request for Tech help, but it may take some time before you get a response. Based on my experience you may have to be persistent and request help in more detail for the issue more than one time.

I do have a licensed version of the Capture One Sony Pro on my desktop which is my #1 go-to program. But the Express gave me so much frustration & trouble I deleted the unresponsive program from my travel laptop and gave up trying to reinstall it. Overall, I think the Express version is a great program in a lot of circumstances and would like to use it again some day in a laptop when travel becomes more accommodating.

Capture One tells me my license allows me two working versions which I suppose could load onto a travel laptop, but it seems a bit of overkill for something I would only use to review the results of a day of photo shooting and maybe do a few quick basic edits to share in email.

That's the same link I've tried using today. It leads to a short questionnaire, then to a download. If you read the fine print with the "Express" download using that link it says it's a 30 day trial.

I'll try going into my account and deleting the previous activation code as you suggest.

Finally - got it reactivated, purportedly for the Express version. Couldn't begin to describe the hoops I went through to get to a page that let me complete the process. In essence, I deactivated the license then reactivated it. What a PITA!

Yes they do seem to make it as obscure and difficult as possible. The older free version seemed to have no limits on installs, but the current free version must have an account registered and a licence number and allows only one installation.

For me it is a "difficult" program to use so tend to always use my paid versions of DxO or Silkypix or Affinity Photo.
