I would like to have an extension cord to use with the little LM3 flash on an OMD.

I know there is the Olympus FL-CB05, but it's no longer in stock. Also, not sure it would work with the LM3. I have also seen a 3rd party cord but it said it was not compatible with the LM3.

Anyone know what would work and what to buy for this purpose?

M43 uses the same pin layout (but not the same pin usage) as Canon but normally only uses three of the four extra connectors. Power is supplied from camera to flash on the fourth connector which is missing from most M43 cables. Canon cables have all four connectors and work perfectly with M43 so just pick any Canon-compatible cable.

Great, thank you.

I bought a third party version of the Canon cable and it didn't work with my LM3 so be careful.

If you do find one that really works please post a link.

Thanks,

Oh, sorry to hear that. In that case maybe someone around here can recommend a known working cable for the LM3?

Over the years I've seen that happen often here in the forum, some "Canon" cables work and others don't. I guess some clone cable makers are not too fussy with the quality of the cables used, thus getting failures.

No answer but to try and make sure the bad one(s) can be returned. I would have thought that genuine Canon branded cables should be OK, it's the clones that are the worry.

I agree with Guy. The first time I bought a "compatible" cord from BHPhoto it wouldn't work at all. The one I have now (also from BHPhoto) is a Vello TTL Cord for Panasonic/Olympus OCS-OP3. This cord works with my flashes (Oly FL-36 & Godox TT-350o) but won't work with the FLM-3 flash. It will not lock into the connector whereas the flashes do. The flashes have the wheel to tighten it into the connector on either the camera or flash cord & the FLM-3 doesn't. I suspect that is why it won't work.

The Olympus cable, or any olympus dedicated cable, will not work because they only have 3 pins and you need the fourth pin for power to the flash.

Canon cables will work with the FL-LM3, but there is an issue with the flash not seating the lock pin. This is because there is a small tab on the front of the flash foot that seats in an indentation in the hot shoe of the Olympus cameras. So some cables will work and some won't due to variation in the spacing between the pins and the front of the foot on the cable.

You can shave some of the plastic off of the foot of the FL-LM3 so that it lines up the lock pin (and thus the pins). Or you can find a flash cable that has dimensions that match with the flash. In that case, the flash won't lock into the cable and you run the risk of it falling out. It won't hurt use of the flash on the camera, as long as you pull the flash back to seat the lock pin when mounting it.

I have had success with the following cables:

Canon brand cable OC-E3. It's a 2 foot coiled cable which I use to about 1.5 foot.

Pixel Componor VM-801. I don't know if you can still get these, but they are very flexible because they use ethernet cables to connect the two heads of the cable. So you can change the length of the cable to suit your needs. Works great with the FL-LM3 (but still can't seat the lock pin). I like the fact that the cables are straight (ethernet) and not coiled.

I've had generic Canon cables that did not work; don't have them any more. I didn't want to shave the foot of my LM3. I have more than one of them now, but I don't use flash cables any more so I haven't seen the need. I'm a wireless radio trigger guy, got lots of different brands as they became available.

My advice:

Get a Canon cable.

If you're going to use the FL-LM3 off camera frequently, shave the tab off.

John,

When using the LM3 off the hot shoe via the cord, does it still act as a trigger to fire other off camera flashes like the FL600r?

Using the cord does not affect functionality.
