Best single "Carry-Around" lens POLL

I will use the DR kit lens until they produce something of
equivalent range -especially on the 24mm end. There is no question
in my mind that it will happen, it's just a matter of when.
There is the Tokina 24-200.

I'm sorry Misha, I should have been more specific. A 24-120mm lens for a 35mm camera is equivalent to a 15-75mm for the DR. It's the DR equivalent that I'm waiting for.

If you had to chose a single lens to carry around and take 90% of

Tamron 24-135 - cheaper, wider, sharper and better built than the Canon 28-135 and is supplied with a hood - no IS though ...

Either of these lenses are good for one lense kit.

Canon 28-135 IS
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di
Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR (if u need bigger zoom)

I use the 50mm f1.4 about 75% of the time and 24mm f2.8 the rest of the time. If you goto http://www.photodo.com/prod/lens/canon.shtml you will see that this lense is has a rating of 4.4 which is tied with other lenses that make up the top 5 best ratings. That's impressive considering that this lense is the one of the cheapest amoung those other top performing lenses.

What exactly do you mean by 'best.' Best performing or best performing/cheapest lens? If you go to http://photozone.de/bindex2.html it lists the 28-135 IS lense at a rating of 2.85 (average) with heavy distortion at the wide end and heavy flare. This is the opinion of 167 inputs about this lense. So best here, I would interpret as performance to price ratio since the the performance is average and the price is low. Comparing it to the 24-70L it is certainly a better lense for the $$. But, the above website lists the 24-70L with the highest rating of 4.63 which makes it the best performing, regardless of price.

The advantage of interchangeable lenses is that YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE JUST ONE LENS. You're talking about an Olympus E-20 or such. With the DRebel, we can have all we want.

Still, the kit lens is used most in our house!

There's no vignetting with the WCON07 mounted in front and this makes for a 31.3mm wide-angle. Quality seems good but I need more concrete tests.

I also have a Olympus B300 to extend the zoom if needed. From earlier tests with the Canon 100mm Macro USM, there's no loss of quality with the B300.

Are you refering to the Sigma AF 28-200/3,5-5,6 Asph. Hyperzoom? I came close to sending mine back until I played with it for a few days. Now that I'm comfortable with the lens, I like it a lot. It's a little on the heavy side for the 300D, but the lens is compact and has a great range. You do need a good light source and a steady hand.

BTW... Photodo.com gives the lens a 2.9 rating. The Tamron 28-300 is twice the price and has a 2.7 rating.

Indeed, that's exactly what I'm refering too. Too bad, the macro version is coming. And I still don't have a macro lense.

is twice the price and has a 2.7 rating.

Why is the 28-135 clearly so popular? It seems to me that the minimum focal lengh of 44m (28 x 1.6) is quite poor - not much width at all for landscape shots.

Why don't more people like the 17-40? Is it because a great premium is given to the zoom compared with wide angle?
