Looking for a super light weight zoom. l have the Nikon 18-135 that weighs less than 400g, but no VR. Don't want the 18-55 AF-P because l don't like focus by wire. And it can't be used on the D40 and the D7100 will need a firmware upgrade to use AF-P. Also l want a lens with AF/MF and VR switches on the lens. So it's between the AF-S VR l or ll. ls there any real difference in lQ between the two of them?

yes, version II is quite a bit better than version I. But the AF-P is best, perhaps you should reconsider.
Agree fully!

Kept the AF-P, which happens also to be superb on Nikon 1 cameras, a bonus for me (I mostly use Nikon 1 and DX, occasionally my FX)!

But he can't turn off the VR if he wants to shoot from the tripod.

IQ wise: Sigma 18-35 > Tamron 17-50 > 18-55 AF-P > 18-55 VRII > 18-55 VR.

Any of the 18-55s are "good enough". The get incrementally better. If AFP is off the table and you want VR, then flip a coin. They are all $30-$100 max.

Some cameras allow you to do it in menus, not all, of course.

I never turn off VR when using tripod, no matter what lens, not least at long focal lengths!

The AF-P is out for several reasons mentioned in the first post.
