How many of you are going to be moving on to either an F828 or
perhaps even a dSLR?
Hello Everybody.

A good friend from oversea asked me a few weeks ago (he owns a few excellent Nikon AF lenses- like me ) what he should buy for upgrade. My answer was :
1)F828
2)D200
3)Fuji Pro 3

Poor guy did search the Net for a day without result. Yes, I made a joke, because I'm not sure. He is more crazy for DSLR, but with a drawer full of great lenses is still no right camera. Maybe the next generation.

For me the right one is the F 828, unless something very wierd comes out from Phil's assesment.

The 828 will be 99% the solution for me. One piece of equipment, good battery life, good double memory slots CF/MS,excellent lens-excellent range and we know the rest too. The noise if is not more than in 717 it's OK. How many times we are printing bigger than 8 x 10????? And we can help that with Neat Image, GF and other softwares. As I mentioned in other tread: we are more concern about noise than those whom we are showing our pictures.
I'm not asking as a comparison of one camera or the other. It's a
question of your current satisfaction level.
At this moment I do have a Coolpix 990 in digital. The 4 year old model says everything... Was fine that time, now its limitations are to big for me.
Satisfaction level 1- 10scale = 6.
Please list the current camera you own, what it does for you, and
what it does NOT do. Then list how your new camera will help you.
Is great to use almost like Polaroid before the bigger format start eating expensive film... With some HG add lenses and a 28-37 adapter I can take pics between 26- 228 mm (only in that case I'm changing lenses and ring..) with no quality degradation.
The camera after a small fall is faulty at the tele end (and viewfinder)

The hot pixels above 1/15 are inadmissible for me, the lag.... well sometimes seconds (or at least looks like more than one).
Possible to take pics ready for a nice 8 x 10 or even bigger prints.

Limits on both ends of the zoom range. The 38 at wide was the reason (and the max. 128 Mb MS available last year) not to buy a year ago the 717

Because in this flaws was improvement, I think is time to change. And of course: is BLACK!

Anyhow, the 828 would cover almost everything in focal range, and using the existent flash diffusers etc could be a semipro solution for me.

If I will need more, there are the big guns. I know they eat film, that is expensive and to wait for lab is terrible - but a DSLR for me is not yet available (not in Nikon mount at least)

The video part is not issue for me having a good DV camera, but is nice to know is there. If will work only with MS Pro I might buy a stick and keep it ready . Question is how long will last the baterry for video. Which will run out off early: the battery, or the memory stick (1Gb).
Ulysses, hope the answer is OK for your poll.
Have a nice evening
Joe

I'm a pretty happy 717 owner but if I was just getting into digital I would buy the 828. I am not one to buy the latest equipment each year because that would be expensive and foolish. I will keep the 717 for awhile down the road. In the future I would hope Minolta comes out with a digital SLR that uses all my old lens. I was into Minolta 35mm film SLR's for over 20 years and have lots of equipment that will now gather dust becuse of the 717.

You can get blur with a digicam like the F717 or F828. It's just not as easy to make it as shallow as you'd get with a dSLR. But there are tricks you can use like zooming in, using a closeup filter or other add-ons.

For what it's worth, what's important is not what the photographers here shoot with, but it's more important to learn the lessons of HOW they use their gear.
Hi,

Shay, do you use the 717 for all your photos? Your gallery is
really amazing. Sorry for the off-topic, just had to ask. It's
actually on topic b/c it will influence my decision to purchase the
828 or the 10D. The biggest obstacle is actually DOF for me. I'm
concerned that I won't be able to pull off that great blur with the
828. Noise is really not an issue since post processing can be the
great equalizer.

Uly,

Moving to the Canon 300D.

I have the F707.

What it does for me:

1) Allowed me to use swivel lens to take picture of people. I sneak a picture of a girl with the swivel lens and she became my girlfriend. For this feature, I think the F707 is priceless.

2) Allow me to take that same girl on many many dates during the last year. http://www.pbase.com/domdom

What it does not do:

1) Does not have enough reach for bird and airplane pictures
2) Is not fast enough for bird pix.
3) Too much sky noise. Sky and birds and airplane goes together.

What the 300D will do for me.

1) Low noise sky
2) Big Zoom to catch the birds

But in your case, i think you should save the 707 to be the cake topper at the wedding ;-)

Think positive! it's a step forward.... a new adventure, a way to push your picture taking to the next level!!

I have a F717 and V1 which i use regularly and a S85 I use when i'm feeling goofy.

My next camera will be either the sucessor to the 10D or whatever the best DLSR in that price range is. There's plenty of shots that i end up throwing away only because i didn't get a good shutter speed at a reasonable ISO. I'm waiting on the next model since I'm not decent enough of a photograher yet to make use of the features (not to mention i'm stilll overly dependent on the histogram), and I' m hoping the focusing on the successor of the 10D will have better focusing preformance.

I got's to have it.... it's the lust factor that bekons me.

I have a CD500 now but I've really been waiting for the 828 since I outgrew me D770 a couple of years ago. I tried to get by with a Fuji s602z but that got sold off REAL fast.... hated it.

I need the zoom, I need the pixels, I need the reduced shutter lag I need the manually adjustable zoom, I need the 30fps movie mode. I need the latest and greatest... but most of all I need it to have a black body so my wife won't recognize it's a new camera and kill me.

Heck, I may never even take it off point and shoot mode but I can tell you that even that will be a glorious improvement over what's available now for an all-in-one.

Oh yeah, one more thing... I need it to last a long time (at least 3 years this time) between mega-major upgrades because this hobby is getting expensive!

How many of you are going to be moving on to either an F828 or

I just moved in September from the 707 to the Nikon D100, and I've been very happy with it.

I wanted the option of wider angle lenses, more DOF control... more control over the camera in general, for that matter. I pretty much shot the 707 on full manual from day one, so I felt comfortable moving up to a more complex system.

I also wanted to get away from the EVF. A real mirror and focusing screen makes fine manual focusing soo much easier I almost never used manual focus on the 707 because it was just hard to tell if I was focused properly or not... I just had to trust the autofocus and bracket a lot to make sure I didn't miss the perfect image.

I thought about the 828 for a few days, but I just realized that I'd be spending $1,200 on something that had the same things I disliked about the 707 (inability to switch lenses, small noise-prone sensor, EVF...).

The 707 was a great camera, and I owned it for almost a year and a half, but towards the end I was tired enough of it that I had almost stopped shooting with it all together. I took it on a month long trip to Europe this past summer, and I was a bit disappointed by the amount of pictures that had excessive noise at ISO 100, color shifts on one side of the image, and other such problems. Perhaps it was the age of the camera showing. I did get some great photos with it, however.

going to sell my new coolpix 5000 and get the new f828 .. for 3 important reasions .
1-the slow lense on the coolpix 5000 - the fast lense on the sony the CZ .

2-high noise level ... comparing to other 5 mp . still don't know the 828 nosie level but i'm sure it going to be better .
3- 28-85 ... is a little for my needs ... 28-200 much much better ..
these are the importat things for me now and sure there is alot more :)

There have been conflicting messages on when 828 will be released. I just hope that Sony will issue the 828 some time soon or perhaps give a statement on when it will be released.

Better yet, Sony should allow the camera to be reviewed because if it's good, Sony will loose many sales when people give up on waiting and waiting.

Why not show customers some respect?

Shooting more often will give me a lot more "keepers" than upgrading my camera.

What I'd really like to buy is a little remote that would allow me to change weather and lighting conditions. I'd be willing to pay a lot of $ for that gadget. I used to love bright sunshine -- now I see the sun directly overhead and just hope it passes soon.

Diane

I would like faster AF and less shutter lag, predictive focus, less noise, and less in-camera processing than my 717. 10D might fit the bill, but the AF problems scare me away. Waiting with baited breath for the rumored 2D or 3D. Hopefully, it won't be too expensive.

Be happy, how often do you get to buy something as cool as a digital camera!

I'm sure it will be. :)
If the reviews are not that great, you may want to look at the
Panasonic FZ10 or the Minolta A1. The FZ10 definitely appeals to
me, but the A1 doesn't although it is similar to the F828 in
features/specifications.

Let's hope the F828 is as good as it looks on paper!
How many of you are going to be moving on to either an F828 or

I have a standing pre-order for an F828 and it can't get her fast
enough. No dSLR for me.
I'm not asking as a comparison of one camera or the other. It's a
question of your current satisfaction level.
Currently I'm very displeased.

I'm displeased because I have no camera. :(
I had a Canon G3, but quickly found limitations here and there, so
I sold it. Even with its limitations it shot some really nice
pictures once in a while. I'm expecting alot better from my future
F828.

Consider me a convert! ;)

I have just started reading the forum over the last several weeks, it is very informative and the photos people post are great. I currently own an Epson 3100Z. I have really enjoyed the camera. I enjoy making large prints on my Epson 1270 printer but obviously there limits to a 4.8 (interpolated) image. I have preordered the 828 based on a feature set that seems outstanding.

The discussion on the 828 seems, more or less, reassuring. I can't imagine that the production 828 will not be superior to the 717 and the 717 photos look terrific. Anyway, it sounded good enough to preorder without seeing real sample photos. I hope this turns out to be a good decision.

I will be Upgrading to dSLR, the one that is going to replace the Canon 10D (3D, 10Ds).
.
.
Sony's (717) Flaws For ME;

1) Focus on low light action shots indoors is almost impossible.

2) Low Light Action Shots are blurry because of shutter speed.

3) Noise at ISO 800 is terrible, Even after NeatImaging.

4) Shutter lag can be very frustrating.

5) Switching between (Add-on) Lenses is a pain, specially in Weddings and Sports.
.
.

I am hoping that all these problems will be resolved/diminished with the following equipment;

Canon 3D/10Ds
Canon 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AF
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Canon 2x II Extender EF

How I will Use it;

LOW LIGHT ACTION;

50mm/85mm Prime lenses for Low Light action Sports, With Higher ISO settings and faster shutter speed, this should help clean up the blurry action.

WEDDINGS;

24-70mm/70-200mm, For standard portrait shots I will use the 24-70mm then for PJ photography I will use the 70-200mm.

GOOD LIGHT ACTION;

70-200/2x II(As Needed), I will use this for Football and Soccer games, Will add on the extender when needed.

I never wrote it all out before... Damn! I can't wait! .... .... .... (still waiting)

The only drawbacks with the setup above is the price, I will be paying 5 to 6 times what I paid for the 717!

Have a good one!
