Hi

I’m just starting to use SPP. Do you keep setting for sRGB?

Should I save them as TIF’s? Only other app I have is Capture 1 for Fuji. Should I spend most of my time in SPP or Capture 1. So far I like the end results with SPP and only crop in Capture 1. I’m not very familiar or good with either one. It has become more difficult for me to learn these software.

I’m using DP2Q, saving both Raw and JPG. I’m unclear on SPP right hand pane for chromatic abberation. Do you click to turn it on for every shot?

1) Yes, sRGB is the default setting for SPP 5.x (my version for Merrill cameras) at least.

2) There is no rule for the saving format, but save so that you can do whatever you need to in the other program. For eg, I use Photoshop, and after getting all I can done in SPP, I might only save as a jpeg (only 8-bits) if all I need to do is something simple, like an AUto Levels/Crop/etc.

If you have exhausted SPP's color and tonal capabilities, you might want to save as a 16-bit tiff for use in the likes of Photoshop. That way you can save a lot more of the original color and tonal info to work on outside of SPP.

Ultimately, you do the final save for whatever your desired output is going to be. If displaying online, the best 8-bit jpeg you can obtain; printing... as required for that.

It takes time to "learn" how to use such software. Basically, start by learning how to do what you want at the time. If it's color/tone adjustments, learn how to use the tools [any] program has to manipulate these. Similarly, re-sampling/rotating/fix geometry of image/etc...

It helps if you are stuck to ask about a specific problem, like you have done here.

3) Can't help about CA.

I use the sRGB working space for adjusting in SPP. Then it is easy to see out-of-gamut colors with the color-picker and with the exposure warning levels. Others here may advise you differently.

I export as ProPhoto 16-bit TIFF for fancy adjustments in RawTherapee or in the GIMP.
Should I save them as TIfFs?
Only if your final output for printing or for viewing on your monitor is a TIFF.

After adjustment in RawTherapee or in the GIMP or in FastStone Viewer, I save them as JPEGs with an embedded sRGB color profile, 100% Quality and maximum Chroma sub-sampling (4:2:0). I don't print, so JPEG is good enough for viewing on my sRGB 2K monitor and for posting here.

I delete the TIFFs and only keep important X3Fs.

I recommend minimal and neutral (not artistic) adjustments in SPP and to do all your fancy stuff in Capture One. If you can't get it to look good in SPP ... delete it.
I’m using [a dp2 Quattro], saving both Raw and JPG. I’m unclear on SPP right hand pane for chromatic abberation. Do you click to turn it on for every shot?
I can not comment on that - I have neither a Quattro nor SPP6 ...

It really depends on what you're using your photos for. If they're just for the web then sRGB is fine, but if you want to print them then you need to shoot in raw and save them as 16 bit tiffs in ProPhoto RGB for maximum quality.

If the images are for the web then sRGB is fine, but if you are going to print then 16bit TIFF's in the ProPhoto colour space will give you the best results for the final output.

I use ProPhoto RGB in SPP
Should I save them as TIF’s?
Yes or JPEG at the highest setting.
Only other app I have is Capture 1 for Fuji.
Get Photoscape X it's free, but there's a lot in the program so explore to see what it can do. Here's the link

Should I spend most of my time in SPP
Yes, SPP works best for the Foveon. But getting it right in the camera is better.

Get Photoscape X it's free. Us it for your tiffs, Jpeg or Raw Fuji. It will work for Fuji also.
So far I like the end results with SPP and only crop in Capture 1.
There's your answer

SPP gets easier hang in there.

No, as CA may not be there.

Good Luck hang in there it gets easier.
